Yes hi! I saw your Zack Foster cosplay and I'm going as him next month and was wondering how you made his scythe. Sort of new to the whole prop making thing. If you can let me know. Thank you! ^^
Heya!
Happy to help! Excuse me while i cry bitter tears because I had typed out an explanation but then my laptop crashed before i could save it //cries. I also have to put up a disclaimer here. I studied woodworking so I had access to equipment you might not have access to.
The scythe consists of a wooden stick and a plywood blade. The stick has a big slot in which the blade is glued and screwed. First I took a big wooden stick and made it the length I wanted the scythe to be. Then I used the cardboard boxes from frozen pizzas (recycling at its best!) to draw the shape I wanted the blade to be.

Then I took them to my dad’s workshop where I took a thin plywood board (4 mm), traced the mold and cut it out with a bandsaw, leaving a few milimeters around the edges. With a spoke plane I planed the edges nice round and smooth, and with some sandpaper I took off the sharp edges. Using the bandsaw again, I cut out the slot for the blade and refined it with a chisel. Since it was a rush job, it wasn’t pretty but we have filler for that haha. I glued the blade in the stick and drilled some screws in for extra security. I filled the holes and cracks with a filler and took it to my friend’s place to paint. I tried to take some detailed pictures of the joint but the lighting in my room is horrible and my phone camera is pretty bad, plus it’s relatively hard to see with the filler and the paint over it, so unfortunately I couldn’t get any.
I bought some cans of cheap cans of acrylic spray paint at the dollar shop. One was metallic black (maybe gunmetal? not too sure), and one was a nice bright silver. I wanted to use primer too but they had run out haha. I sprayed it all black until it was nice and even, and using the cardboard mold from before, I sprayed on a sharp edge with the silver. Left it to dry, and voila! I’d recomment spraying a transparant lacquer or a sealer as a final coat since the wall my scythe is leaning against has some black stripes now, but it’s not that bad.

I hope this helps!! If you have any more questions, feel free to hit me up again. Hope you have lots of fun!!

I just realised I never posted this photo of the shoot I had back in 2014! Scandalous, as it’s one of my favourites!!

hi! i wanted to know how you made the bandages comfortably fit your face in the zack cosplay :o Everyone that i've seen they get really loose and my bf really wants to cosplay zack but had troubles last time.
Hey! Honestly it was a hit or miss, I had no idea if they were gonna stay up the entire con but they did! I used elastic bandages. I first bandaged my face the way I wanted it to, then my friend sewed them together in three vertical lines (two on the sides of my neck, one in the front, from my neck up to my chin). After that I put on my wig, which also helped everything stay in place. This way I could also carefully pull the bandages down to eat and drink. Getting them off was a bit tricky but I managed to do so without damaging them so I could probably wear them again too! To make sure your face isnt one big white blur and make them look used I shaded the bandages a bit with black eye shadow.
For the gloves, I happened to have thin white cotton gloves from work. I put them on, bandaged them and once again sewed them on. They ended up being a bit thick and bulky and the bandages were easily damaged but because I was wearing gloves underneath it still looked decent and I was able to take them on and off!
I hope this helps, and good luck!!EDIT: I just remembered I borrowed my friend’s fake eyelash glue to glue the bandages to my cheekbones in two spots!! It really helped the bandages stay in place, they started sagging a bit after lunch. You could probably also use prosthetic glue or something similar!
