I wonder if "Americans having some of the highest consumption rates in the world" being an explicit economic planning goal of the US government over many decades and being publicly celebrated when accomplished has anything to do with the fact that it is now currently the case. I wonder if the fact that our economy is organised in such a way that declining consumption rates are highly undesirable for their effect on GDP, tax receipts, etc. is in any way relevant to this. Well, probably not. I think it's the consumers' choice.
