Milhous Childrens Services

Milhous Children’s Service provides a full spectrum of residential treatment and other services for children and youth experiencing behavioral, emotional, or educational challenges. With separate programs for boys and girls between the ages of 10 and 19, Milhous Children’s Service has a ranch in Nevada City, California, along with three sites near Sacramento, California. At these locations, residents can receive individualized care for disorders and issues that limit their ability to function successfully at home, at school, and/or within the larger community. During their stay, children and adolescents participate in an educational program that meets Common Core Standards while attending to each students unique learning needs. Every student has the opportunity to progress at an appropriate pace in accordance with his or her Individual Education Plan (IEP). Additionally, Milhous offers year-round learning, which allows students to earn credits during the summer and catch up with their peers in traditional schools. Residents also have access to treatment from licensed therapists and psychiatrists who can help them address mental health issues. We are enjoying the newest addition to the MCS Horse Program; his name is “TC”! These “Level Two, Wranglers” have earned the privilege to ride “TC” by themselves! Any resident can participate in the Horse Program, and those that attend regularly have the opportunity to advance through three levels: “Cowboys”, “Wranglers” and “Horseman”. In each level, residents learn how to work with and care for horses and as they advance through the program they gain special privileges such as off ranch activities and participate more advanced learning. The Horse Program is also an excellent coping technique and teaches residents social and emotional skills that can be applied to all areas of their lives.

Special Thanks to the Folsom Breakouts for all their support; You’re making a difference!

Board Transition Announcement
Richard Milhous has been CEO of Milhous Children’s Services since 1968, when he, his parents and his brother co-founded the agency. He is a modest man, but his accomplishments have been profound and deeply meaningful to the children in our state.
Under his leadership, Milhous Children’s Services has become a critical asset for the State of California in its efforts to help youth with the most severe psychiatric disorders. He has inspired all of us in the difficult work of creating a therapeutic environment for these children, where they can learn to modify their behaviors, where their families can learn to establish more positive interactions in the home, where children can benefit from individualized education, and most importantly, where they can obtain treatment for their mental health disorders. It was Dick Milhous’ vision, and all of our hard work to help him fulfill that vision, which made Milhous Children’s Service the unique resource that it is today.
Effective now, we are implementing our long-discussed plan, in which Dick is transferring leadership to Dan Petrie, who will take over as Chief Executive Officer. Dick will support Dan by serving as Chief Financial Officer.
Dan has developed trusting relationships with our staff, referring agencies, the state Community Care Licensing Division and other key officials whose support for Milhous Children’s Services is crucial to our success. His service to Milhous Children’s Services has been exemplary. Meanwhile, the Milhous family, which founded this agency in 1968, will sustain the family legacy and vision with the continued involvement of Dick’s family, including his daughter and son.
This transition plan serves the needs of the organization, the children we serve, and the many social service, law enforcement and education entities in California who refer Level 14 youth to us. It will allow for both continuity and change, ensuring that we will benefit from Dick’s continued involvement, while Dan has the opportunity to take a fresh look at the organization at a time of significant change in the social services landscape in California.
Milhous Children’s Services will always bear the name of Dick’s family and will serve for many years to come as a monument to a man of compassion and skill who affected so many lives and helped so many troubled children to heal. He is justly proud of his achievements, even if he won’t say so. We are proud of him, and will do our best to live up to his legacy.

Help Milhous and Donate
Help make a difference...
The children and adolescents placed at Milhous Children’s Services are in need of guidance, support or just a helping hand. The boys and girls served by our program are facing a variety of severe emotional, behavioral and learning disabilities. Their lives are beyond their control, and in many cases, Milhous Children’s Services is their last hope for help. Thankfully, our team is able to reach many of these children and help the entire family begin to rebuild their lives together.
Everything we do, however, relies on the support of our own community. The generosity of companies, individuals, parents, educators, and volunteers is essential to the health of our children and our organization.
You can greatly impact the lives of hundreds of children by giving financially to one of our program needs; your direct contribution will help Milhous Children’s Services continue to offer our programs and treatment services.
