Evaluation ...
Overall I've really enjoyed the freedom of this project. compared to previous projects this has been my favourite, i've been more passionate about more work allowing me to enjoy myself more. This project started off as me thinking my outcome would be a garment but the more I did research and the more I dug into why tank girl was so influential. I realised I could go elsewhere in my final outcome. i don't think if i'd have made a garnation, my research would have been seen or understood. Deciding to go down the styling route allows me to really dig into what tank girl meant and how she was linked to punk. It gave me more leeway with my ideas. I've made four layers of photoshoot images, secondary images, sketches and a video, which I think goes to show how much I wanted to cram into my work because I have a backlog of research I wanted to get out. so not doing a garment was definitely the best decision. I'm so proud of my final outcome. I think it's so unique and original. Making it a social and interactive scene also means not only I get to enjoy the outcome but everyone does.
A lot of work went into this project. It's the first project where I feel proud of my work and income. I believe ive done well, I've done more research than projects before because this was a personal and extremely interesting project for me. I believe my final piece shows everything I wanted to stand for in my project. I'm so glad my mums at the centre stage because she inspired me to really dig into tank girl and why she was an inspiration not only to my mum but everyone.

This is the final page of my sketchbook. For this page I wanted to try and display what my final piece will look like. I used a base layer of the image of my final piece with the projector and images on it. I used that then built a collage around it of my primary and secondary images and my sketches to really visualise my final piece. I thought it would just be great to see it all laid out on a page. I think this page is a great final page, I think it really ties in with everything I've worked on over this project.

I put my work to the test and tried it out on the projector. all images are printed onto acetate and drawn onto acetate. This allows anyone to layer images on images. I'm thrilled with how it turned out. The top image is some of the pictures being used on the projector. The second image on the left is what they look like being projected. they're a lot larger, which I'm happy with. The sketches over the top of the images are really effective, I believe and add so much more detail and character to my work. The image to the right is what the video looks like over the top. I'll get into the video in my next blog post. I'm so happy with my result. The fact it's an old school projector adds more character and gives it that vintage feel which is great. I can't wait to see the public play around with my work and make their own collages.

final piece & exhibition idea...
My final piece idea got changed along the way. After much discussion I decided to use an old fashioned projector to project my primary photoshoot images and my secondary images. along with my sketches. so in all there will be three categories for my images for people to choose from...
photoshoot images.
secondary images and research images.
and my hand drawn sketches.
The thought process for my final piece is that the images will be laid out in groups. The public that sees the exhibition can pick and choose images to layer and see them come to life on the projection. Obviously the projection is going to make my images bigger, the images from the photoshoot will be big images of my model. the images id like to almost intimade people in a powerful way, using all ive learnt from my research to do with feminism in the tank girl and the punk movevemt. I want people to be intimidated by my images of people looking different and in my opinion really unique and cool. I think this will be achieved in my final piece. To make it interactive means people can get involved and see more detail in the work I've produced. I like the idea of people picking and choosing what to collage. This final piece I think is very unique and I can't wait to see people's reactions.
I decided at the last minute to add a video as a fourth layer to my piece. I think a video would elevate my final piece and make it more intricate. I used videos I made from the shoot, videos from music videos that relate and videos of my work. For my video I wanted to achieve a punk and grainy look tomit. so i perusley made it look grainy to give it depth.
Here are some screenshots from my video ...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
I used clips from the tank girl film, along with sonic youth clips, videos I took from the shoot with my model, videos from my research into social perceptions of women and videos of my work layered over the top.
The video I think is really in keeping with the overall punk feel, and it ties everything I've researched and worked on together. all my works were combined into one video. I think it's going to look great alongside my projection.

The first image is showing my research images from riot grrrl, punk and tank girl. This page is just a collage of everything I've been looking into over this project. I like how I've laid out all the images. The collage looks very appealing to the eye.theres a lot of colours and different styles of images. I believe it shows my narrative well.
The next image is a punk inspired page, using scanned images from a punk book I have. I layer the images as a base layer, then over the top I ripped up some paper to write on in a punk style. I wrote ‘punk isn't for girls’ . This was a quote I heard from a video about the punk movement. This page I think is really effective and screams punk. Because of the black and white text, I like this page because the text and images are paired really well to simply show that this page's theme is punk.
The images below on the left are me experimenting with the acetate id printed. I wanted to see if it layers well over other images which it does. The images that I used will also be used in my final piece. This page was more of an experiment than anything. That's why I kept the background relatively simple.
The page next to that is another about punk and riot grrrl. i used images from my pink book as the background, over the top i used images of riot grrrl. The primary photo of me and my friends I used to sketch over the faces again for practice for the final piece.
The image below is a page of me deciding what style to use when drawing for my final piece, because I didn't want to use a different style for each image. I wanted to achieve a sketch and comic feel. So I chose the first sketch and the last sketch to combine and make my final illustration style.
The image to the left of that is another experimental page using acetate over the image from my photoshoot to see what some sketches would look like over the top of an image. it worked well, obviously the sketches for my final piece will be in more detail. This was again an experimental page.
The image below is another punk page. i scanned images from a book and layered them with some sketches I did on the side. I then used black ink over the top to write some punk references and to add more character and a scrap book feel to this page. This page is quite similar to the other punk page, which I like because it makes it clear that punk is a big part of my project.
The final image is another where I wanted to see what my final outcome could look like. I used my own images as a base, then over the top I added pieces of tracing paper, to sketch my comic style of the image on the top. it worked well so i was left assured that my final piece would be what i wanted.

These are two more images from the shoot where I used digbeth canal for the location. The pink graffiti you see on the walls made me ready for the shoot. They say ‘tank girls’ and ’punk isn't for girls’ . I wanted to add more to the scene for the shoot. These pictures came out well. I like the fact that all my images are in different scenes. It adds diversity to my work. I will be using these in my final piece as well.

photoshoot outcome. These are some of the final images that I chose from the shoot.
for the images in my room, i chose to style my room with crochet rugs on the bed and some little trinkets and cd’s. I styled my model in a leopard print skirt, a baggy t-shirt and jumper along with some doc martens. I chose to keep one sock up and the other down just to add some detail. In the first image I wanted my model to hold the light by her side to make the shoot look a little more professional and to add another accessory.
In the second image I chose to use my handmade clay face as an accessor or I thought it fitted my theme and photoshoot well so I let my model hold it in front of her face. I think this gave the image more character. This image is one of my favourites for that reason.
in the third image I used the stairs as a location, with a top change to make my images more diverse. This image was not planned. We randomly decided to try this location and I think the bimage adds more to the rest of the shoot in the way that it's a different location and top.
The last image is my favourite, the colours all compliment each other so well. The angle I got to make  her shoes look bigger I think is very effective and adds a different element compared to other images. Using the gun as the accessory is also a reason I love this picture. if i was told this image was inspired by tank girl and punk id instantly see the links. The outfit and accessories make it all fit into the punk and tank girl aesthetic.
Overall, I am thrilled with how these images came out. I wouldn't change a thing about them. I can't wait for them to make an appearance in my final piece.

secondary research on designers and illistrators.
The 1995 film made about tank girl, was a cult classic that captured the empowering side of tank girl. one way they achieved this was throwing the outfits, the effortlessly sexy but without showing too much of her body off. The people behind this were the young and unknown at the time rick owens and well known costume designer arianne phillips. Owens worked on some pieces with Arianne including a jacket, skirt and a coat. The coat was incredibly punk, Philips states in a dazed interview “Half of the coat is made of army fatigue pants, mashed up with denim and leather jackets, with different sleeves, kind of like a patchwork look,” the coat screams punk, it fits right in with tank girls aesthetic.
This is the coat below, as you can see it screams punk. The patchwork design makes it very unique. it's ahead of its time in the fact that it's reused and repurposed fabrics. the kangaroo on her right shoulder you can see the reference to her boyfriend roger the kangaroo. The badges and patches make this coat very unique.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
illistators
The illustrators behind tank girl are Jamie Hewlett and Alan martin.
Tumblr media
Jamie Hewlett has a very unique style of illustrations, his style stands out from the rest. He also made the characters for Gorillaz which are easily seen to look the same as tank girl. When you see his work you can instantly tell him. He has stated some of his influences for his work, one of them is Carl Giles who is a cartoonist who was best known for his work in the daily express british newspaper. his style you can see influenced by tank girl.
Tumblr media
The black and white scenes in tank girl look similar to Carl's style. Not only does the style of drawing look similar but I think the shadows in the scenes with the blue shadows look like tank girls. It's very clear that Jamie Hewlett was inspired by him.

final piece/Photoshoot plan.
 Ideas for location and scenes…
Digbeth canal, capture graffiti in the background, in daylight and sunset. Possibly graffiti some punk quotes and riot girl text. My room uses lamps that have model hold lamps, birds eye shots above bed, with tank girl comics around.
Styling…
Use clothes that we've already got. Using models and my style together. With this shoot I want to capture individuality like riot grrls. Not copying anyone.
Accessories…
Cigarettes, graffiti can, little trinkets and tank girl magazines.
Images from shoot printed on large pieces of paper to hang, with layers of see thru materials. With sketches of comic book versions over the top. Possibly a video from the shoot projected over the top of a layer. Could make it interactive with rales, so the person can move through each layer.
Tumblr media
above are some inspirational images for the style id like my pictures to be.  i used an image from digbeth canal, and images from the internet that i wanted to take elements from in my shoot.

research into societys standards when it comes to females.
In the past I've watched videos from the Jenny Jones makeover ‘makeover my outrageous teen’.
This show now looking back is exactly what society expects and wants from women when it comes to what they wear. The show began with parents saying they want their punk kids to wear normal clothes. It was a panel show, with multiple girls wearing their own punk clothes and extremely unique fashion sense. the parents would penalise their children for wearing this and embarrass them on live tv, the audience would also make fun of them. the girls would then have a makeover into boring and femenine clothes to make them look more appropriate for society. The audience and parents would then calm and applaud the girl's new look.
This show is very controversial and must have been toxic for girls at the time. This show was around in the 1990′s again the time when punk was big but not quite accepted yet.
With my work I'm trying to celebrate being different and punk.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
above are some images from the show of the girls before and after the makeover.
I will be using these videos and images in my work. I've been thinking of making a video to go alongside my final piece so for the video I will be using clips from this show to show how being different and punk wasn't accepted when it was big.

progression of sketchbook.
Tumblr media
the picture above is another page from my sketchbook, these were some outfit ideas inspired by punks and tank girls. The first design I took inspiration from the tank girls hat that she always wears, the crop top and belt are again inspired by tank girls outfits. I wrote ‘next issue’ on the crop top as a nod to comics and I thought it linked to the punk movement, and women's issues in society as women have had to overcome many issues. I like this design. The colours go well together and I like the meaning behind it. The middle design I really like. I think it's very unique and stylish. This outfit is mainly inspired by tank girls. The body suit is very unique and reminds me a lot of what I think tank girls would wear. The stars over the nipples are very punk and adventurous, the pleated tennis skirt is just what I'd expect any punk girl to wear; it's a  classic black and white colour scheme. This outfit is my favourite out of the three. I love the pale green, pink and black colour scheme. It all goes together very well. I think it's a very unique outfit. The last one is a basic outfit but quite boisterous, with big baggy denim shorts and a small black top. It's nothing too exciting but I love the style and it's just what I'd expect a tank girl to wear.
Tumblr media
This page is one of my favourites. I love how chaotic it is and how it looks like a scrapbook, all the images are scanned apart from the image on the left. This is a sketch of my friend that I made. This sketch was to experiment with sketching from an image to a comic style. This style is my own. I chose not to look at any images of tank girls while drawing this because I wanted to set in stone my style. During this project I didn't want to copy tank girls' style and I think I've succeeded in this because I found my own style that I can incorporate into comic sketches.
Tumblr media
This page is one of my favourites. I think the black and yellow combination is very unique. I used this page to display and really give the viewer a feel for comics. For this page I chose to use images that I'd collected from the tank girl comics. I chose to include the scanned images of the t-shirts you could buy in the comics.  I thought it was really interesting to see the t-shirts you could buy because that's not really a thing anymore. The t-shirts I thought would be great to include to link to the fashion element. I chose to keep the black and yellow colour scheme to just add an element and something more to this page. None of my other pages necessarily have colour schemes. and from previously speaking to classmates about my concept, we spoke about having a comic page and maybe even a comic strip. so i wanted to bring that advice into my work. by making this page as related to the comics as possible. in the top left corner i drew a picture of my friend in a pop art/comic style. I did this as practice for the rest of my sketches I'd be doing in my work. Overall, I really like this page. I think it's very unique compared to my other pages. and again is outwardly hinting at the narrative of my work, being comics.
Tumblr media
This page I chose to do some designs even though at this stage I didn't know what route I wanted to go down in regards to my final piece. so i wanted to experiment in doing designs for my concept. the design on the left i wanted to look at the violence in the comics, the comics included gons and other weapons. i wanted to make a contrast of the violence side of things and look at the other side being innocent and fragile. so i designed a mesh gun embroidered bra, and a silk pink low waisted skirt. Although I didn't go down the route of making an item of clothing, this design I loved and am definitely going to make at some point during future projects. The design on the right is based on the image of my mum on the left. I wanted to dig into the more tank girl feel of things. I designed the tank top based on the top my mum's wearing, then with the rest of the design I just went from my imagination and what I think would go well with the top. I wanted to use the army style I see in tank girl. So I decided to design some army green cargo trousers. with fishnets underneath to give that punk feel. with some chunky shoes and orange socks. I liked this design. I could see people wearing this style. I think the look is unique and very in keeping with the tank girl theme. I like both my designs on this page, but I like the left one more just because I've never seen a gun bra before. I think it's a really unique idea and I will definately be using it in further work. I designed the gun bra on paper...
Tumblr media
This is a design I did for the bra. just to test out what it looks like on the body. I think it's so original. If I was to make a garment from this project I would definitely have used this idea.
Tumblr media
This is another one of my favourite pages. I like the colour scheme I chose and the two designs I am very proud of. For these designs I wanted to look into the style of tank girl and put my own twist on it. Both designs I went with a cowboy theme because I was inspired by the guns from the comics. I wanted to make looks that could have been used in the comics. including the pockets for the guns. I used similar colour schemes for both outfits. the outfits are both feminine but also have a masculine side ie. the gun pockets. overall i like this page i enjoy how full the background is, i filled the background with doodles and some inspired by tank girl. The outfits I think are very unique. I'd love to see a trend like this start to evolve in fashion.
Tumblr media
This is just a bigger version of the previous gun bra design, I wanted to make a bigger version so I could see more of what it could look like. I did the sketch of the model in a comic style to add to my theme. There's nothing much to this page, it was more for experimenting with the size of the sketch.
Tumblr media
this page im not happy with. For this page I wanted to display the pictures of my mum and do some sketches in practice for my final piece. I achieved my goal for this page with multiple sketches and primary images. but for the page on the back of this one i used felt tips, and the pen leaked through to this page making it in my opinion look way too cluttered. There is now too much going on on this page to fully take in the sketches and images. Overall I'm not happy with the way this page turned out.

modern day tank girls & riot grrls...
Modern day tank girls…
For me modern day tank girls are women that stick out from the rest of us. Women that aren't afraid to show who they really are and express themselves outside of society's norm. One example of this for me is Billie Eilish. She's a 19 yr old american singer, as well as being famous for her music she also gained faim from her fashion sense. She doesn't wear what you'd expect a female superstar to wear. She doesnt show her body off like an accessory. Compared to other women in music some tend to wear less clothes. Billie stands out for this. She wears big baggy clothes to almost hide her body. Before she's spoken about doing this because of being insecure. She stands out from the crowd for her stubbornness towards not giving in to society or even mens standards when it comes to showing skin. Billie made a short film called Not my responsibility, in which she talks about people's eyes and opinions on her body. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDlbjVrGfCE
The video is above, and sums up what a lot of females go through when it comes to body image.
Modern day riot grrls …
Kim gordon from sonic youth, was openly a feminist. Kim Gordon was singer and bass guitarist for Sonic Youth. Sonic youth came off the back of the riot grrrl movement. Kim wrote songs talking about  feminism and one called fear of a female planet. Many riot grrrl bands didn't like talking to the media and they kept themselves to themselves. Kim was more mainstream. She stood out because she was the only girl in a band of men. She seemed powerful because of this. She stood for what was right when it came to female rights, which was very punk of her and exactly what riot grrls wanted and needed. As many riot grrrl bands refused to talk to the media Kim was more mainstream so some could argue she may have boosted the movement because she spoke and performed more for everyone to make a judgement on her and the movement.

how tank girl was empowering & riot grrl research.
Tank girl empowered women by pushing boundaries, she wasn't what society expects or thinks women should do or act. She lived in a tank, which is instantly cool because it's not what we expect. Men typically would be associated with tanks and fighting. That's what is striking about tank girls. She's not like a comic character we've seen before, she goes on missions and fights with guns etc.
I asked my mum how a tank girl inspired her…
‘She had a fearless attitude, and wasn't afraid to express herself.’
‘She didn't take any shit and she smiled a lot.’
‘She knew what she wanted and wasn't afraid to get it’.
I'm sure she empowered many other women. Nothing she wore was unusual; her fashion sense was well pieced together that made her striking and intriguing. She had confidence but not an off putting or anyong amount. It made her desirable by women, they wished they could be her.
The comics style is linked to punk visual art  and the punk movement in general. The style of art is prevalent to punk album covers and flyers.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see the fonts are very similar, even though tank girl is quite colourful compared to the punk flyers, it still has that punk feel. Its translation threw the typography of the comics. In my work I would like to use these styles of fonts to hint to the punk feel even more. The text is very similar, both texts are in bold and block letters, both on the side of the page.
the definition from the dictionary of feminism is ‘the advocacy of women's rights on the ground of the equality of the sexes’
Tank girl links to feminism becuase it empowers women by dipicting them as  inspiring and influential.tank girl (which came out in the 1990′s) The film displays what feminists have tried to highlight, and displays what women stand for when it comes to their rights. For example in a part of the comic tank girl is asked to perform a sex act and returns by killing him. This is showing women she won't be dominated by a man.
In the 1990’s women became fed up with the punk scene as female punks were not listened to, were assaulted at shows and did not become household names like the men did. Many men thought ‘punk wasn't for girls’ . As a result of this, tank girls and riot grrl arose to fight back and address the issues within punk. The punk girl groups formed a safe space for other punk girls to express themselves. they used zines to address these issues, and extend the point through music.
A punk feminist group called riot girrl were around the same time tank girl were. They were a subcultural movement that took place in the 1990’s in Washington USA. the group stood for feminism, music, politics an punk. This group links to tank girls because the movement allowed women to express themselves the way men have done. Like a safe space. Tank girl made women feel comfortable because she was a space for women to lose themselves and enjoy tank girls empowering actions. Like in tank girl riot grrl addressed issues women face like rape, abuse and patriarchy. Women in punk started writing zines as a way of expressing their feelings. Tobi vail from the riot grrrl scene and the founding member of bikini kill, made a zine called jigsaw. in it she said ‘i feel completely out of the realm of everything that is important to me. and i know this is partly because punk rock is for and by boys.’ As you can see this was obviously a massive issue for women in punk. tobi vail and kathleen hannah both joined forces and made their own zine bikini kill. Although the zines were all well and good, in order to get the point across they felt that the only way to spread their message was through music.
In 1990 vail and hannah teamed up with billy karren and kathy wilcox, to form a band named after their zine bikini kill. bands like bikini kill and bratmobile (formed in 1991 by erin smith, allison wolfe and molly newman.) bands like these were the power behind bikini kill. bands started cropping up because of the riot grrrl movement. which was great for the punk rock scene and helped redefine it. riot grrrl had a massive effect on music as we know it. it influenced many to stand for what was right in the music community.

pitch feedback
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is my pitch ebove. in which i was discussing what i would like to look into for my project. I changed a lot of what i wanted to look into after many discussions for what i wanted my main focus to be which ended up being how tank girl inspired women and how she was influential. along with looking into the punk movement that happened when tank girl was big. For my pitch feedback, I got a lot of advice on what to research. For example, my peers recommended I research punk groups such as ...
riot grrls, bikini kill  and the people involved. I did a lot of research as seen in other blog posts. I was also advised to look into modern day riot grrrls and tank grrls.
I was advised to also look into typography but I chose not to because it wasn't my main focus and I knew it wouldn't have added anything to my work.
The feedback helped and gave me more ideas.

sketchbook
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Above are the first three pages of my sketchbook. for the pages i wanted to just set the scene of the comics and the style of tank girl. The first image is the first page.
For this page I scanned in images from the original comics that my mum gave me. all images from these pages are scanned from my comics from home. I wanted to use black and white images as well as coloured ones. to hint at the comic style. I wanted to add a title to this page as an introduction to my work. So I wrote tank girl in a colourful font. i used a block sort of font similar to the font used in tank girl. I would use this font in my work, but looking into typography isn't going to be my main focus.I chose to make the text colourful to visually communicate the scenes in the comics that are so colourful and happy.
The second image is just a filler page again to show the theme of tank girl. I used scanned images from a book about the comic and the original comics themselves. I wanted the page to have contrasting colours between black and white and coloured scanned images. This page is intentionally not too interesting.
The third image is the third page. again using scanned images, from the book and comics. i wanted to use the coloured image of tank girl and try to manipulate the image. I cut up the picture in a curved pattern leaving a chunk of the image uncut. I spread the cut images out on the page to just add more detail to this page.
These three pages I think are a good start to my sketchbook I believe. They just set the scene for my work perfectly. They show what to expect in my work, they show what the comic displays and how it will show how my work links to the comic as it goes on. I think these pages display my theme well. threw the rest of my sketchbook id like to progress in what my pages look like. such as using my own work instead of images to fill pages up.

initial ideas for final project.
I had an idea of what to base my subject off. the tank girl comics, my mum has heavily influenced me. When she was younger she was massively influenced by the comics, to the point she even shaved her head like the well known comic character. i have many film pictures of her when she was young and you can tell she was influenced by many things including tank girl.

the pictures above are some old film pictures of my mum, you can see that she was inspired by tank girl, because tank girl had a shaved head in the comics. my mum when she was younger shaved her head because she adored the comics. My mum's fashion sense is also similar, like the small tops that you can see in the images. The tank girl wore similar tops to the ones my mums wore.
The tank girl comics were a very original style of comics including a distinct sense of style. Tank Girl was influenced by UK punk and pop culture. although it may not seem like it because it's set in america. tank girls style is very unique, it's a huge mixture of outfits and accessories. She wears a lot of steampunk goggles, fur coats, fishnets and lots of layering of accessories. The pop and punk influences in tank girl are the fashion statements and her attitude. punk can be defined as a young teen or person that is rebellious and expressive. Tank girl is punk because she stands out from the crowd and isn't afraid to express herself.
I don't know what my final outcome will be. I'm thinking of making a garment or styling and making a photoshoot. I'm going to keep my options open as I go through this project and do whatever feels best. this comic gives me many options of what i could do, it's very versatile. because the comic has its own style i can easily make a look and style off this comic, or a garment based on my research.
I have alot of primary research for this project thanks to my mom's collection of the comics, as I progress in my research I will be using these comics.

Above are two images of the comics, as you can see Jamie Hewlett (the creator of the comics) has a very distinct art style. me and peers noticed that my designs and sketches look quite similar to his style. I've always loved the whole aesthetic of tank girl. A theme I'm going to explore and research more is how she was supposed to empower women. as you can see her style is so unique, it's a vast mixture of styles. Her styles are very punk, army and grunge. Her outfits are quite chaotic, there's a lot of colours and fabric combinations. which really allows her to express herself. her style isn't really exclusive to one gender. She wears male clothes and a mix of sexy female clothes. This makes her so unique. The colour schemes of the comics are really well done, they all tie into warm tones and greens. using comics to inform the visual identity and style.
In class we did a concept mind map. I brainstormed some ideas for my sketchbook layout, and ideas for what to go into. ideas for my sketchbook included laying it out as a comic strip, to really display my narrative through my sketchbook. I could du black and white pages and come coloured pages like comic strips. In class I got a classmate to do a mindmap of my project to see if I could gather any other ideas for my work.
