"It Is Finished”

With today’s post, my 52-week project is finished. I accomplished what I set out to do one year ago today–with some adjustments, of course–to post a photograph representing something “authentically me” each week for a year. It is a new day, a new year, and it is time for another goal. Today I am returning to my previous 1-per-day Project365 Tumblr blog under the name milmon365

Some of you may remember my previous Project365 that was so violently disrupted by the smashing of my car window and the theft of my camera (I know, I know, I shoulnd’t have left it on the seat!). In closing, I want to thank all of you who have followed me on @milmon52 . Thank you for liking and reblogging my images, and for commenting and encouraging me this past year on my photographic journey. As I mentioned in yesterday’s post, some pretty heavy doors have closed in my life, allowing the whole world to open. Brilliantly. I am so very happy, so at peace, so energized, and so humbled. I wish the same for all of you.

It has recently occurred to me that this, and the other images in the series, represents my looking inward at my physical space as an analog to my practice of mindfulness meditation.

I realized today that over the past year I've developed a set of images all shot in my bedroom. I am now bringing them together as the "In My Room" Series. More to come in the next few days.

“Sunset Roses” (Week 48/52) by Milmon F Harrison

McKinley Park Memorial Rose Garden. Sacramento, CA, USA

Continuing to practice using the new wide angle lens. It's very different than what I'm used to but opens up some really new possbilities. I was interested in the subtle effects of the fading sunlight on the white roses (and I really like it and the bokeh throught the trees). In hindsight, I wish I'd also taken some shots focused on the distance rather than on the roses and allowed them to be less sharp to point to the trees, sun, and clouds behind. For future reference, I think I'll reverse that to see what I'll get. Gonna try again and compare.

Taken at the StoryCenter, Berkeley, CA, where I spent the past three days attending digital storytelling workshop. This was the view when I came out into the hallway this morning. Glad I had my phone to grab this picture. I wish I could be there every day.

My kids, after my son's band concert, which included his saxophone solo ("Hans and Leia" from Star Wars). By the way, it was also his 14th birthday. So much activity around the kids these past few weeks. It's always such a whirlwind, but I'm proud of them both and privileged to be their dad.

The very first moment of my daughter's Spring Dance performance. One of the first shots taken. This is not my daughter, by the way; she's in a later piece. I really liked this image because of all the "white" space, and because I "see" light in the blackness of the background; it seems as if she has an aura or halo around her body–or is that just my imagination? I still see her rising as I look at it.
