The line that Soda can put just about anyone to sleep, implies that Ponyboy has seen Soda put multiple people to sleep. We know that for Darry it’s Soda’s back rubs, but what about everyone else.
Ponyboy, who is only able to sleep because Soda shares a bed with him. Even with all the aspirin Pony takes, it’s Soda’s arm swung sleepily across him, Soda’s mere presence, that reassures him that if he has a nightmare he won’t have to wake up alone.
Sandy, who falls asleep on Soda’s shoulder because when she leans against him he goes more still and calm than anyone would think him capable of; staring down at her mesmerized like he’s trying to freeze the moment in time, stroking her hair softly enough to remind her that there’s still gentleness in Tulsa.
Steve, who’s treated to a full body tackle when he crashes on the Curtis couch, Soda playfully refusing to move from his position as human weighted blanket until Steve gives up and goes to sleep. Soda pretends he’s doing it to annoy him, because he knows Steve would die before admitting that touch and weight soothes him, and because the best antidote to a home he gets kicked out of is a home he couldn’t escape if he tried.
Johnny, who sometimes gets skittish at physical touch, so Soda sticks to talking. He just starts rambling about whatever, his animated voice just a few subtle notes softer and lower and less excitable than usual, keeping Johnny company while taking the focus off of him; taking off all the pressure for Johnny to interact or take up any space in order to be given it, and letting him just be.
Two-Bit, whose beer Soda replaces with water at the point before sleepy drunk becomes sick drunk, when he can still get a good night’s sleep, entertaining him with jokes and stories and getting him buzzed on friendship instead of booze.
Of course, Ponyboy says Soda can put “almost anyone to sleep.” Unsurprisingly, Dally is the exception. Soda’s tried, inconspicuously watching tv when Dally crashes on the couch, but Dally just waits him out until Soda’s the one who falls asleep on the floor. Only then does Dally let himself relax, because maybe he sleeps better when someone he trusts is close by, but he would never be vulnerable enough to let himself be “put to sleep.” Which is why Soda fakes sleep, and why he never lets Dally or Pony or anyone else figure it out.

I included an idea I have for it in my fic poll a while back but I need someone to really sell me on Dallypop, ramble to me if you’d like. I’d think it’d be a fun dynamic, adrenaline junkie/rule breaking duo type thing.

sodapop headcanons
hi outsiders tumblr fandom! i am reposting this because when i last posted it... i realized i had on settings that like blocked my posts from being posted to tags/searching....
i've had the honor of playing Sodapop in the play version this past school year (roughly September to November 2024)! i'm also a major fan of the musical and got to see it twice (once the summer 2024 and once this February 2025)! but i just figured i'd share a (LONG, buckle up) collection of characterization or characterwork and headcanon thoughts from when i was in the play!
feel free to ask any questions! my Sandy is also on tumblr so we'd be willing to post our shenanigans and thoughts about sandypop too! (we think about them constantly)
some prefaces about our production (mostly director's choices) :
we casted genderblind, our pony and darry (among others) were played by girls!
soda did get sandy pregnant.....it wasn't cheating
the year is 1964! (this one isn't insanely relevant)
the curtis house was two stories (this will make sense later...)
so first are some random character thoughts (mostly canon) :
100% a momma's boy (ex-momma's boy...)
sticking to canon that he worked at a stable when he was 12, rip Mickey Mouse
quite the caregiver, in the sense he is incredibly emotionally intelligent (especially when it comes to his family)
very lighthearted person, walks through life that way
adrenaline junkie, consistently trying to enjoy life and have fun
emotionally vulnerable, but puts others first out of fear if he opens up too much he might not be able to stop
violently passionate and loving, viscerally supportive. ultimate loverboy.
he isn't stupid! he just struggles to learn in the format school teaches
much more street and people smart
prideful but definitely fairly polite
confident in himself! though he holds insecurity in being dumb, since he's only regarded for being a looker...many many instances where he's been flirted with at work but is so oblivious because the comments are so common
puts his cold bare feet on whoever is sitting with him.
walks around barefoot a lot in the house. and outside for that matter
would drop all of his pennies out of his pocket...
would likely be a musical theatre kid in the modern day. his favorites are Mamma Mia and Little Shop of Horrors.
big fan of rodeos, play fighting and drag racing
BIG fan of darry's chocolate cake
not at all a smoker (this comes from my director not wanting us ALL to have prop cigarettes, i also stick close to the "soda not smoking unless upset and stressed" so i just cut it for my version)
really not a cracked fighter... i lost my fight in the rumble (just the way it ended up being with my fight partner but...)
fave colors are blue and orange!
specific relationships notes:
sandy and soda have been together for 2 years! momma curtis loved her
so so SO in love with her tho, basically worships the ground she walks on.
he doesn't get over her for a whileeeee.... but he still doesn't blame her
dates to baseball games were so common. definitely danced together- in the kitchen or out in the rain, at a party? dancing always.
strong relationship between pony and soda, they were just there for each other, had each others backs and stood up for each other. soda understood pony's "dreamer mentality" but things were never too serious between them, soda tries to keep it lighthearted. when things did get serious, soda always tried to give perspective and advice. he worries about her but understood the her need for independence (he can't help it sometimes though).
(arguably) stronger relationship with darry (played by one of my bestest friends ever!), he understands her and helps where he can, loves her and respects her a lot- but is able to joke around with her without it being too serious.
the push and pull between both sisters takes a toll on him, mediator to the max.
two-bit and him are pretty close, her actor and i have a joke that two-bit and soda hook up and maybe get together a few years after sandy.....no comment
steve and soda are pretty close! not as locked in as in canon but...(context: we basically wrote steve into the script) they are locked into the grind at the DX and definitely go out to rodeos and races together
johnny and soda are not the closest but lowkey are in the lighthearted "we are literally best friends" kinda way, soda's insanely protective of her (genderbent!) after the jumping
dallas and soda were a lot closer when they were younger, soda likely introduced dallas to the group, but they kinda grew apart as they got older and especially after the curtis parents died... soda doesn't really approve of too many of dallas' choices, but he's still family
cherry... she definitely has thrown him a few looks when stopping by the DX... me and her actor like to imagine maybe they've flirted and had minor crushes on each other at one point in time
extra details + things:
i made a playlist, containing both time period based music and music i just think soda would listen to! (i occasionally updated it whenever i find music i think he'd enjoy):
some leads in the cast made "get to know me" sheets as jokes during characterization rehearsals, so here is mine:
in the script, it mentions soda's returned letter to sandy, so i got tasked with making that prop! she also gave me one on closing night, so we could trade after the show (she took home this prop)! it was sandy's unsent letter to soda back in Tulsa after she moved. sandy's last name was picked as a reference to Sarahgrace from the musical cast! i actually ended up handwriting the letter too, but doc is more convenient to share it's contents...so here is that link, and a photo of the letter!
i also have a pinterest board that i created to try and emulate "my Soda's" vibes, i add to this occasionally too! here is the link:
while remaking this post, i figured some people may want to see the costume! my director is very much a traditionalist when it comes to theatre costume theory, especially colors, and actually hasn't seen the musical (though we talk her ear off about it) so there is no inspiration there! it's also made up mostly of my own clothes!
...aaaaaanddddd this is the end! thank you for sticking around for so long LOL

jpc soda is so full of life. he is constantly chewing on his dog tags, messing with ace, messing with his brothers, shining brighter than anything. he is soda. he is sassy and sarcastic and wears his heart on his sleeve and cries when his horse is gone.

outsiders 6/25 evening show notes! long as hell buckle up divas
- sorry so many of these are about jpc i just think he’s neat okay 😔 feel free to shoot me an ask about anything you want to hear more on!
- the sweetest older lady was sitting next to me and during intermission she asked me if i was enjoying the show and i was like “yeah it’s my second time seeing it” and she was like really impressed and pointed me out to the rest of her family (who she was sitting with) and said “see she liked it so much she came back a second time”
- we were both crying in tandem during the end of act two and i gave her a tissue
- jpc soda and anna ace are literally best friends they played UP the fake flirting & they kept putting their faces really close to each other and fake making out
- post johnnys death jpc came up behind anna and pulled her into his chest from behind and like rocked back and forth
- jpc soda has these moments where he seems so tired even at the beginning of the show - he’s always putting his face in his hands or like propping up his head with his hands and just generally exhausted
- i can’t find the post now but it reminded me of that post someone made a while back with quotes from the book that show soda being constantly exhausted and napping
- however jpc also gave appropriate annoying middle brother energy in GGAH he kept like sidling up to brent and doing finger guns at him and poking him and brent was like batting him away they’re literally the brothers ever
- in the pre great expectations scene trevi asked “do YOU dream about them?” in a different way - brody does it as if he’s just kind of asking soda off the cuff, but trevi’s tone makes it almost seem like a “you dream about them too? so i’m not the only one having these nightmares?” which is such a heartbreaking interpretation
- when ajg dally exited during the drive in scene he shoved trip (cole) who actually fell to his knees LMAO
- jena & devin were having their lavender bevbrill moment HAPPY PRIDE 🏳️🌈 they hammed up the romance and were making out during the entirety of i could talk to you all night LMAO
- from where i was sitting they did not separate their faces ONCE
- sg and dan berry said paul and marcia bestie rights….during tulsa 67 they had like a little moment where they held hands and dan whispered smth into her ear and she giggled
- during the end of i could talk to you all night when everyone is facing the back of the set marcia was sitting between paul and trip with her arms around both of them
- during hopeless war the socs stand around the fountain and pass around a flask and they each toast to bob which is such a neat detail
- trevi is SUCH a kid. his “burt lancaster’s a sissy!!!!!”was hilarious
- on a more depressing note during johnnys death scene he kept repeating “no” really softly and it genuinely broke my heart like oh my god that’s literally a child who just lost his best friend
- jpc soda jpc soda jpc soda. where do i begin - he’s so so affectionate with pony & the hug post johnnys death was actually SICKENING jpc like sat down and pulled trevi in between his legs and full body hugged him from behind and BURIED his face in pony’s hair
- as a self proclaimed soda pony hug connoisseur and this one was just perfect
- one thing no one ever mentions is how the rain from the rumble is still like just barely dripping onto the stage during little brother - idk if it’s an intentional choice or just how the rain system works but i think it adds such a chilling effect to the song. ajg was actually on fire through that whole song too it was my first time seeing him & he is so so good
- jpc also made me lose it during the scene before stay gold - when trevi took the letter from him to start reading jpc sat down next to him and started STROKING PONY’S HAIR and i actually started bawling and didn’t stop crying until the end of bows
- the dinner scene was so so good. something about the brent jpc trevi combo just screams real brothers to me like they are so believable as brothers and you can FEEL how much they love each other
