I THINK I KIND OF FIGURED IT OUT!!

so in india you are praised for wearing traditional outfits IF and ONLY IF you can afford to buy western outfits

so lower income classes are mocked and thought of as ‘uncivilized’ for still continuing to wear things like salwars and sarees (and dhotis for the men) and its because thats the only thing they can wear since western clothes are a) more expensive and b) the concept of ‘colour matching’ is unneccesary in a lot of traditional wear because a lot of them are in sets but is mandatory in things like jeans and shirt because they hardly ever come in pairs therefore it is just easier to wear traditional clothes because when you are trying to figure out how to get your next meal you will barely have time to think about if you should wear a green shirt with light blue pants

whereas you have people from the richer classes whos daily outfits are western and are called ‘modern’ for wearing those but still get to adorn traditional outfits on important days like festivals weddings etc and they are called ‘beautiful’ and ‘cultured’

essentially saying that traditional clothes are acceptable only if they are a choice worn by the rich and not a necessity used by the poor

yeah colonization really fucked us over
