headcanons : HOW A GIRL BECOMES A WEAPON ( excerpts from lila’s childhood and training. )

aged 5 : she’d been with the handler for a year now. the handler told her she was very smart and would be part of a very special training program, but lila didn’t feel smart or special. her new mum had the girl try different ‘science experiments’. she had lila stare very hard at objects or touch fire or run as fast as she could, but whatever she did, she didn’t do it right. she knew the handler was getting angry. ( please don’t leave me, please don’t leave me, i’m trying, if i just knew what you wanted me to do then i would do it, she thought ). lila was introduced to a strange man who was also involved in science experiments. he was like her, he was special. didn’t lila want to be special, too? the man slammed his fist against the wall. lila winced, expecting to hear bones break, but there was silence. his hand had passed through the wall as if it were thin air. that was how he was special : he could move through solid objects. why didn’t she try? lila was scared, but she curled her fingers into a tiny fist and punched the wall. her hand passed through. more experiments followed and it was discovered that lila could mimic others’ special abilities so long as that person was nearby. 

aged 8 : mum said they were going to play a new game. it was called ‘bullet tag’. lila was to run through an obstacle course while mum fired a paintball gun at her. if she was hit, she was out. they played that for a couple weeks and lila got very good at it. she became careless. she got hit. lila fell to the ground, the shot hurting far worse than usual. red stained her pants, but it wasn’t paint. from now on, they’d be playing with real bullets.

aged 12 : by now she could speak seven languages. ‘trust no one’ mum would say and lila would repeat it in mandarin. ‘always be alert’ mum would remind and she would repeat it in french. 

aged 16 : she got her first trial run : go to a normal high school and pose as a new student. a week in, she got the additional assignment to pick a boy, any boy she wanted, and get him to date her. lila would never admit it, she rolled her eyes each time she was asked to report to her mum about something so mundane, but she liked being around normal people. she chose a decent, likeable fellow for her mark and it wasn’t long before they were dating. it was nice. he even asked her to prom. lila couldn’t even pretend to be unexcited when she reported this back to her mum. it was then the handler told her of the final part of her assignment : she was to kill her boyfriend on prom night and then go to the dance as if nothing unusual had happened. if she didn’t kill the boy, the handler would leave her. if she alerted anyone at the dance to what had happened, the handler would leave her to be arrested. lila completed her assignment : she killed her mark without getting even a drop of blood on her dress, she smiled and danced, she made it through the entire night until the handler picked her up and spirited her away before anyone could find the body. it wasn’t until lila was certain she was alone that she broke down crying.

quick headcanons that will be written up into a more comprehensive bio later

lila’s father was a flower merchant and he used to make flower crowns and chains for his wife and lila.

lila remembers more about her biological parents than she lets on. ‘the handler’ always claimed her parents were alcoholics and they lived in the slums, but lila knows that isn’t true. she doesn’t question ‘the handler’ about this or recognize her true motives as lila assumes her adoptive mother was only trying to lessen the pain from the loss of her parents.

since ‘the handler’ always wears red shoes, child lila began to only wear red shoes as well. she wanted to associate herself with her adoptive mother and bond with her. after she realizes ‘the handler’s’ involvement in her biological parents’ deaths, lila never wears red shoes again.

she was sixteen when she made her first kill. ‘the handler’ made her kill her prom date.

she can speak at least a dozen languages.

her fighting preference is hand-to-hand combat, because it’s a fighting style where she doesn’t have to rely on weaponry that she may or may not have access to in the moment. while her choice weapon would be something more practical like gun or knife, she thinks blow darts are fun.

she’s morally gray / chaotic neutral.
