some context: since alaska needs to balance keeping salmon numbers up and the fact that a lot of their economy is based in salmon fishing, they have goals for "escapement" for each river system, ie, the number of salmon that make it past the fishing boats and head up to spawn. They release numbers for daily/total caught and daily/total escapement every day for the duration of the salmon runs, so that they can adjust the numbers of both as needed to maintain the health of the salmon run. The sockeye salmon escapement goal for the Naknek river system, which Brooks River is part of, is between 800,000 and 2,000,000 over the course of the run.

Things are moving fast this year, and we're a bit ahead of schedule! As of yesterday, the cumulative sockeye salmon escapement for the Naknek river system was 11,328. The daily sockeye salmon escapement for the Naknek river system released today is 47,670.

The total number of sockeye salmon headed up the Naknek River just jumped from 11,328 to 58,998.

It usually takes 4-5 days for the salmon to get here, so in a couple of days we should start to see the run really start Going Strong!
