Future Reflection
Drug trafficking seems to be increasing for the future.  New drugs are being created as well as new technologies to create the drugs.  People world-wide will be affected by the drug epidemic unless a stop is put to Drug Trafficking.

Future
The future of drug trafficking remains to be undetermined.  However, based on past evidence, suggestions seem to turn towards rising rates in drug trafficking all over the world.  As drugs are trafficked legally and illegally from country to country, the business seems to be continuously growing.  New cartels and drug administering organizations are appearing in countries such as Africa, Mexico, and the Middle East in general.  New drugs are also appearing in different regions of different countries, such as captagon in the Middle East.  The future of drug trade seems to be enhancing as new features occur, dealing with both organizational establishments and drug manufacturing.
I predict drug trafficking to continue to rise as technology becomes more advanced.  Advanced technology allows for quicker, more efficient drug production, as well as new drug creation.  Factors such as dictatorships and communism influence the rise in drug trafficking as well in developing countries.  As mentioned before, Panama’s dictator had allowed the drug trafficking to occur in and out of his country.  In addition, financial issues cause countries to lean more towards official drug trafficking.  Developing countries struggling to find sources of revenue such as the countries in Eastern Africa want to develop illegal drugs to somehow bring in income.
Wars also have been a heavy influence on the drug trafficking world, as war, exclusively in the Middle Easy, allows for easy drug trade across borders without causing issues.  Soldiers are fighting, countries are planning attack methods, therefore, causing focus from the economies and the social aspect of these countries to be diverted.  The United States, for example, has been in a military engagement with Afghanistan for almost 20 years.  Therefore, since 2001, drug trafficking has been increasing greatly in the region.  A chart posted earlier on this page shows how the drug trafficking increased mostly all the way up to 2014.  If I could make a prediction, I would guess drug trafficking will continue to increase at a steady rate.  The United States, as of 2019, has states who officially legalized a once illegal drug: marijuana.  This may be evidence to the increased demand for drug trafficking, however maybe not.  Since other drugs seemed to have spiked in the Middle East though, I believe it is safe to say in about 10 years, unless quick and immediate actions are made, drug trafficking will be at an all-time high.  New technologies may make trafficking easier in the future.  If trafficking is increasing now, what will stop it in the future?  Actions need to be made, starting individually and worldwide, in order to stop such an epidemic.

Present Reflection
I found it interesting about which countries drug trafficking was a big issue in currently.  I figured the Middle East would be too busied with war, they would not have time to traffic drugs.  However, I guess war is a good opportunity to traffic drugs while everybody is distracted with more important issues.  In addition, I did not realize captagon was such an important drug in the Middle East, nor did I know what captagon was.  The new drugs people are coming up with are amazing, as in, they have become so clever as to include multiple drugs in a single pill. The drug trafficking business does not seem to be stopping and neither do the drug manufacturing businesses.

Modern Events
In recent history, drug trafficking has been a big deal, especially in the United States and border patrol.  Border control has become a large issue in the topic of not only illegal immigration, but also with illegal drug trafficking.  As of the election of 2016, a border wall was promised to be placed into effect.  The border wall, which is now attempting to be built as of 2019 by President Donald Trump, will be a deterrent against illegal drug trafficking because of a physical barrier, along with border police, could control the cartels more easily than simply border police.
However, issues arise at the border with illegal drug trafficking when other factors such as bribery come into effect.  Even though security has increased, an article by the Southern California Addiction Center states many more officers have been subjected to bribery and are not staying “true to his or her job”.  Among the American people, this may cause issues where drug trafficking increases in the United States.  People affected directly or inadvertently by this issue could spread throughout the country as drugs are traded across the land border.
In addition, drug trade in the Middle East has also been affecting the United States in recent time, however, seemingly less dramatic than the U.S.-Mexico border issue.  Tied to terrorist groups, the drug business in the Middle East generates revenue in staggering numbers of about $322 billion annually.  In order to fund special operations, organizations like al-Qaeda use drug trafficking to produce necessary funds.  In addition, the terrorist groups purchase and sell their drugs such as heroine and captagon, a white pill acting almost like a steroid, from low-income countries, reselling them in higher income countries to effectively generate income for their projects.  Efforts to help control these issues are made by the United States by placing Drug Enforcement Administration officials in the country to attempt to regulate the drug trafficking.
Furthermore, drug trafficking seems to be an issue in different parts of Africa.  In the past 10-15 years, Eastern Africa is experiencing a worsening situation when it comes to drug trafficking.  Inefficiencies in the control and monitoring of drug trafficking channels in East Africa have allowed for drug businesses and cartels to prosper.  The inefficiencies relate to products such as heroine, cannabis, and cocaine to name a few. This social issue will result in health problems for the people of East Africa as well as other areas of the continent as drug trafficking will spread throughout it.  Since drugs such a Mandrax, a sedative containing multiple drugs, emerged, drug trafficking has significantly increased and will continue to increase unless the production of illegal drugs such as this one increase.
Overall, the drug trafficking industry seems to be prospering, especially with the creation of new technologies to help create illegal drugs.  Efforts are being made to help stop drug trafficking worldwide, however they do not seem to be effectively working, especially since production and revenue seems to be increasing.  The effects it will have on people across the globe will be detrimental, as we see the legalization of marijuana in the United States has already begun to make an impact on the country.  Drug trafficking in other countries, as well as the U.S., seems as if it should be taken more seriously than it is, as articles describe methods to control it to be ineffective.

Historical Reflection
The history of the American drug trafficking was not only surprising in itself, but the occurrences in which the incidents happened.  My expectations were met when Mexico and other Middle Eastern countries were mentioned throughout parts of history involving drug cartels and other drug-related events.  However, i did not expect to see a pattern in which drug cartels were created.  Smaller cartels would appear, and once they were extinguished in their area, they would simply merge to another cartel or another cartel would pop up in their place.  I find the pattern to show abolishing drug trafficking to be difficult since multiple sources exist where drugs are illegally created and traded.

Drug Trafficking History
United States drug trafficking supposedly has been occurring since the mid-eighteen hundreds.  Beginning with Chinese immigrants coming to America, the drug trafficking begins in California.  The immigrants brought opium, a tar developed from certain species of Poppies, smoking which contributed to a long chain of events contributing to the drug trafficking. Soon other opiates became popular such as cocaine and morphine.  Morphine became especially popular during Civil War times when it was used to treat soldiers, who later became addicted.
In addition, the American Mafia soon became involved during the mid-1900’s when marijuana became especially popular, then an illegal drug. Mafia groups had been caught smuggling drugs across United States borders, paving the way for future drug cartels which used drug sales as their prime revenue.  Mafia participation in drug trade sometimes was called “French Connection” because smugglers in New York City would take drugs from Turkish shipments from France.
Later in the 1960’s and 70’s during the Vietnam War, soldiers were exposed to heroin.  As soldiers were sent to Vietnam, heroin smuggling was boosted, leading to more Americans becoming dependent on it.  Also occurring in this time period was the Medellin Cartel, based in Colombia.  This organized group of drug smugglers reached especially high power in the 1980s when it was run by infamous Pablo Escobar and a few other co-leaders.  Raking in more than $60 million a day, the United States and Colombia issued a treaty leading to problems for the Colombian drug cartel.
As the Medellin Cartel is impeded in the Americas, Panamanian General Manuel Noriega said the Cartel could ship cocaine through Panama instead in 1982.  During this time, the U.S. had created the South Florida Drug Task Force.  This association was to shut down cocaine trade through Miami, where drug trafficking violence was increasing due to the Medellin Cartel shipping through Panama.  Finally, Noriega surrendered to the Drug Enforcement Administration in 1989 when the U.S. invaded Panama, where Escobar and his associates were later arrested, and in Escobar’s incident, killed.
Other drug Cartels such as the Cali Cartel, El Chapo and Los Zetas of Mexico, and the Gulf Cartel were also reaching their prime in the late 20th century and early 21st century.  These Cartels, who smuggled and sold marijuana primarily as well as other drugs across U.S. borders, are still in existence today as drug wars as recent as 2015 have claimed more than 80,000 lives in Mexico.
In recent years, drug trafficking still remains to be of significant concern as Middle-Eastern groups such as the Taliban and al-Qaida have become major producers and shippers of illegal drugs.  Mexican and Columbian cartels are still a problem for the U.S. government, but new groups such as those in the Middle East prove to be growing issues.  Distribution of drugs such as powder cocaine, meth, marijuana, crack cocaine, heroin, and oxycodone amount to be the most smuggled drugs for crime offenses as of 2013. Drug trafficking continues to be a problem as of today, so we must do everything in our power to help raise awareness of the issue, and, to ultimately eliminate drug trafficking in the United States.
