Plan-Right from the beginning of the Graduation!!!

So you are in first year of your higher education. Seems pretty exciting, doesn’t it?

But do you want to pursue your majors abroad?

Let us chalk out a plan for you, so as to ensure that by the time you complete your final semester, you have secured an admission in the college that suits you and your personality!!!

Ensure though, that you are ready to get serious towards building your profile apart from enjoying the fests and the excitement the college life brings along.

Map out your choices –

It is imperative.

Until and unless you have a target in your mind, you cannot achieve a goal.

See what interests you. If possible, take a counseling session and see should be your career choice. Once you are done selecting this, move on to the next step.

Map out the criteria –

You need to be sure of the criteria on the basis of which students are selected. You can talk to the admission counselor in the universities for shredding more light on the criteria.

You can also speak with alumni of the university, or the faculty members. They can guide you with the related aspects.

By now, you have selected the universities you wish to study in and you have mapped out the criteria. By this time, you might have completed your first year as well. Ensure that you are concentrating on your grades as well, as they are going to be the paramount in deciding the fate of your application.

Ensure that you involve yourself in some community work, or take part in summer internships to back your application. Participate in college events, Participation in good seven to eight co-curricular activities thorough out your stint at the university, should greatly improve the quality of your college application.

You can also start preparing the draft of your essays and statement of purpose. Write them, edit them and critique them. You can also show them to the professors, friends – who can help you in adding or removing some part of it. Now, with the onset of second year, go through your goals again. Introspect, whether you are going in the right direction, whether this is what you want to do!!!

If your answer is yes, start preparing for your standardized tests. Chalk out the time-line you want to spend in preparing for it, and then giving the exams.

If your answer is no, work on your plans again. This time it will not take longer than a month or two, wherein you will take time to finalize the program or the university you want to study in, and then mapping the criteria. Preparing yourself for the above mentioned process of selecting, mapping and preparing for tests, should take two years. Side by side, select the professors who can write you some good recommendation letters.

Unless you want to go strictly in a STEM program, choose professors from different branch of studies. One can be a math lecturer and the other could be a humanities professor. This will bring variety to your application.

Ensure that your grades complement your application – They should be good, if not great. Your transcripts will help you in ensuring admission in the college of your choice and it might get you a great scholarship opportunity. With the onset of your final year, start tying up the loose ends. Ensure that your application is not missing anything.

Check and re-check all the documents that you uploaded.

Rectify your grammatical errors in essays, and SOP’s. Ensure that your essays, SOP’s do not include cliché statements. They should present your personality, in a near-perfect way.

Once you have checked your application thoroughly, hit submit!!!

Why GRE Subject Tests should be taken by International Students

GRE subject test is recommended by universities to know the depth of your educational curriculum.

Imagine this: You are running a university and you have students from all over the world, applying for the admission.

How will you segregate the best students with not so best ones?

How will you test the depth of their knowledge?

In India, curriculum of English Honors (Delhi University) is different from Boston University or any other domestic or international universities, then how will you select the students?

Recruiter’s and Professionals’ Viewpoint on an OMBA

There is still some hesitancy among employers to hire a candidate with an online degree, says Rohit. There are some faction of employers whose eyes smirk when they see IGNOU or SOL written over a prospective employees’ resume. Speaking with employers abroad and within India, there is a wide range of opinions. Employers abroad, focus mainly on accreditation and do not (at times) care to ask about the way a degree was achieved though in Indian market, there still is a stigma attached to an online degree.

Institutes abroad such as Kelley School of Business (Indiana University) provide online MBA and due to the value attached to the name of the college many questions are pointed out to an experienced candidate. Mostly the questions are how were you able to manage your education and work?

Doing an MBA abroad, whether online or regular as a value attached to it, due to the strict accreditation policies whereas, in Indian degrees, people are more cynical owing to the non-existence of proper body who governs the stature of university, level of corruption and student’s mindset. Mostly in such cases what is considered is the reasons behind pursuing a degree online, whether it was the marks, the economic factor and how was the time utilized?

Pay-gap can be another factor but Amir denies it. ‘If the individual is capable enough, then why not?’ Negotiation is another factor but then if you are capable enough to fit in the job description then should be no such gap though if there is, you should definitely ask for a raise once you complete your probation period and the same should be discussed during the interview. ‘You are always welcome to put your point across’, says Nandini who belongs to a consultant firm. ‘Employers mostly require good candidates as I personally have seen no such discrimination’.

Thus, there needs to be a proper educating the firms regarding an OMBA. Within India diaspora, universities need to pull their socks up and ensure that corruption within the universities is sent on a draught so as to gain the trust factor. Universities need to be self-understanding as well, as reputation of colleges matter and once the work gets out, there institution’s reputation is laid to dust. Pursuing OMBA abroad currently is in fashion and employers are more than satisfied if the school is reputed.
