Mind Metrics - Mind Muscles

On vacation in Hawaii last week, I woke up in the middle of the night and stumbled about in unfamiliar space in the dark - I bumped into walls, tripped over furniture, and felt completely lost—until I found the light switch! Kinda like trading without clarity.

Inflation control via interest rates? It's like treating cancer with aspirin. The cancer is skyrocketing government debt, underfunded Social Security and healthcare, private pensions, and a personal savings crisis. Pretending that interest rates can balance inflation and growth with the underfunding cancer is malpractice.

The Map Is Not the Territory Alfred Korzybski famously said, “The map is not the territory.” Yet some of my coaching clients are letting their political "map" shape how they navigate the financial "territory." Korzybski emphasized that a map’s value isn’t in the conviction of our belief, but in how well it mirrors reality. When our mental maps—our thoughts, beliefs, and perceptions—align with the actual landscape, they become powerful guides to achieve our goals. Many mainstream media predictions about a Trump presidency have created maps in my clients' minds that misalign with financial reality. Instead of financial chaos, we’re seeing gold drop (anticipating stability) and the stock market hitting new highs. Shifting to a more accurate financial map is no small feat. It challenges our financial understanding, skills, core beliefs, and sense of identity. In my coaching, I help clients separate their financial map from their political filter. This reframing keeps their identity intact while empowering them to navigate the financial world with a clearer, more accurate map.

"In a recent talk with my son about the economic future, we both acknowledged the challenges that might await his kids: escalating debt, intense political divides, and a cultural cycle moving from growth to potential crisis. My worry was clear—what kind of chaotic world might my grandkids inherit? What can I do? Then my son, masterfully reframing, reminded me, 'Dad, we can’t control the world they’ll face. But we can equip them with resilience, creativity, and character. They don’t need a cushioned world; they need strength to thrive in a challenging one. Their adaptability and innovation could become a new foundation of value for our future.' A powerful shift—what if we built on this idea instead of fearing it?"
