All Things Fanfic (2.0)

A few years ago, I shared an in-depth questionnaire for fanfic readers & writers to help gather insight into our amazing community, and now it’s back and better than ever with new questions and some necessary inclusion updates!

This updated version is designed to collect responses (all anonymous of course) and create helpful stats about reader & writer preferences. Majority of questions apply to fanfic in general (no specific area) so you can participate no matter what fandom you're a part of.

If you answer both the reader & writer sections (optional), this will take an estimated 10-15 minutes. Thank you so much in advance for participating. Your input helps not just me, but all other writers and readers too 🩷

May ~ Birthstone Drop

The month of May has its name from the Greek goddess Maia, which translates to nursing or good mother. Just like the goddess watching her children grow the month itselfs gives us the potential of growth and collecting power - if we throw in the germanic word maeg as an origin for the word "may".

May: an emerald is also called the "Jewel of Kings" having captivated humans for ages with its lush green colour. According to ancient beliefs the emerald granted the ability to predict the future, making it incredibly valuable and treasured by rulers. Additionally they also symbolised fertility - fitting for the month of Maia.

someone I follow on the bird app just announced they’re starting a very exclusive private fic server because they and a bunch of other people want to talk about how much they love the fics they’re reading, and as an author can I just say that a really great place to talk about a fic you love is in the comments for that fic

I understand that people are trying to create safe spaces, but as the number of comments that I get on my fics dwindles with each passing year, knowing these spaces exist where my fics are being discussed, places that I am excluded from, makes me want to write fic LESS

I mean I guess who cares, right, because if I stop writing, there’s 10,000 other people that will continue…but if you participate in a fic “book club” server and you say nice things there about a fic you loved, maybe copy and paste that into a comment on AO3?

the only thing fanfic writers are asking for in return for hours of hard work is attention. please don’t rob us of the one thing that we hope for when we hit “post”

No offense but it really gets to me that mediocre writers like you get so much interaction on your fics just because you put porn in while writers who write better but prefer sfw get scraps. 1000s of notes on your fics and theres no plot except fucking.

Hi anon. I'm not entirely sure if this message was meant as rage bait or just poorly worded frustration, but I’ll respond in good faith.

I absolutely understand the challenge that SFW-only writers face in a fandom space that often leans heavily toward NSFW content. You're right that some of the most incredible, moving, and well-crafted stories are entirely SWF or lack smut/spice etc. And they absolutely deserve more visibility and recognition than they often receive. Total alignment there with you.

That said, you're being needlessly hostile and dismissive, both toward me and a large portion of this fandom. If your goal was to advocate for SFW creators, that point gets lost when it's wrapped in personal attacks and inaccurate assumptions (and opinions, tbh). Not that my work here in this fandom means anything in the grand scheme of things, but a majority of my own works are plot-driven, and I'd argue that world building is one of my strengths and is usually what I'm known for.

And you know what? That actually doesn't matter in this argument, because there is nothing inherently lesser about NSFW or PWP. They are valid, valuable, and meaningful forms of fandom content. Just because a story doesn’t align with your preferences doesn’t mean it lacks merit or shouldn’t be celebrated. So what I do in my writing actually doesn't even matter because whatever I decide to put out is creative and I had the balls and desire to do so, thus making it a valid piece of art.

Everyone is entitled to their taste, but belittling other creators (or me) is not only nasty work, it's pretty ugly of you to do.

I’d suggest taking a step back and thinking on if sending this ask was necessary. If the answer is yes, Hali is the specific source of my frustration and problem with this fandom, then block me. And then fuck yourself because I'm actually really nice.
