Psych Post 2
Weston Hogan Professor Draper 3/12/2017 Psychology 1010 Psychology Blog Post 2 This is the second blog post for my student learning volunteering at South Jordan Elementary. I am still with the same teacher Bonnie Crockett, and will be for the rest of my time volunteering. I have really enjoyed doing this volunteering and have learned so much about young kids and their developing at young ages. Building relationships and friendships is very interesting, and watching them learn the material, and seeing the gears turn in their heads.
Something I have found very interesting is while I'm grading the spelling tests, I have noticed that there is usually one or 2 words that stand out from the students that they struggle with to spell out. The spelling tests are done in either a subject (Outdoors, Activities, or Genre and they can be done in ending or beginning phrases). It is interesting to see that such a little one letter swap can trip the kids up and they will spell it wrong. From sounding out the way their word is spelled it sounds right, but the written form in incorrect. I find this interesting being older that I am able to see the differences in the words from being older as the kids think they are right from sounding it out being younger. I have always remembered that from a young age that if you sound it out it is probably right or really close.
From being able to work with the kids and be in the class it has given me an opportunity to get closer to teaching and psychology and to be able to learn things that I never knew before. A trick that Mrs. Crockett has used a lot in the past with previous classes and even with this class is positive reinforcement, and using treats. It is interesting how fast they will pick up a concept or how fast they will sit down and behave and attentive they become. It doesn’t matter how old somebody gets or even animals. If there is positive reinforcement for anything I have noticed these kids will learn anything. The same goes for positive negative reinforcement, if the kids aren't doing something right then they will be punished i.e. less recess time, more homework. This is very similar to the experiment with the mice and rats, that they will learn to push on the pedal for food, or they would push on the pedal and get shocked, the same can be done with kids, (not the shocking of course) but other methods of negative response can be done. It’s amazing how this same method can be used from kids to adults, and yet it’s so simple.
It is so nice to be able to put the stuff we’ve learned in class to the things I am seeing in the class. It is always nice to be able to make connections and see the patterns that are happening in society today. I love watching the kids learn and grow and helping them to develop and learn new things that they are taught and how they learn new concepts and are brought up around them. This helps me to better understand the concepts and to see them applied. I have always been interested in what the developing little minds need or have that helps them to understand some concepts so well. For me this has been an amazing experience to volunteer here and be able to work with these kids.

Psych #1
Psychology Blog post # 1 2/12/2017
With this being the first blog post I should probably give some insight on who I am, and what this blog postings will be about. I am currently a student at Utah Valley University (UVU), in the course of my Psychology class I will be doing a Student Learning activity. For this activity I will be volunteering at South Jordan Elementary. I will be working with 5th graders, and mostly the teacher. Helping out in the class with any task needing to be done. These tasks range from helping kids one on one, or grading papers, to helping with activities. I am really excited to be working with younger kids. I picked this age group because I felt that personally I could associate with them easier and be able to link observations back to psychology.
On the first day I talked with the Bonnie Crockett the teacher I’ll be working with for the semester, and she told me a little bit about some of her kids she has this year, and how she wants me to work with some of them individually and help them advance in the areas they are struggling in. One boy in particular Mrs., Crockett told me about has his mother, in and out of jail. His dad walked out of his life and he is living with his grandparents. She can see all the potential he has and wants me to help him build confidence in the class and help him focus more on his school work and wanting to put in a good effort. I’ve noticed that even being in the class a few hours I can tell the quiet kids from the noisy ones, I can tell the ones that need a lot of attention and the ones that are just fine on their own and are happy to be at school.
It’s very interesting to actually put a real life example to what we are studying in class. Psychology is essentially the study of the mind and its behaviors, so with seeing these kids and the differences it is really eye opening to see what is going on in developing minds. I find it very interesting that one kid will learn something by touching it, doing hands on activities and he will know exactly what to do the next time or be able to explain what we did. Then another student needs to read the instructions in order to understand the concept, and some of the kids just want to do it on their own and take on the task by themselves. You can really see this in the kids Valentine boxes. Mrs. Crockett passed out papers a little while ago to build a valentine box and to bring enough treats for everybody in the class, and she also brought an example and showed them something they could do. This was interesting because by giving the kids the paper she accommodated the ones that needed the sense of sight and reading. Then she brought the physical example and let those kids use their sense of touch to understand the project better and to be able to relate it personally.
Teachers really are amazing. They do so much that goes unnoticed and they can be the difference in how different generations learn, teach, grow, and develop. I personally am very thankful for what the teachers I have had in my life have done for me and how they have influenced me to work hard, be a better person, and so much more. I am excited to keep working with these kids throughout the semester and to learn from them myself and to be able to teach them something that I have learned through life and tricks to helping my schooling easier. I am so very interested in seeing how the kids react differently to situations that you or I would be placed with and how they would react and go through that thought process.

Run and Gun till it’s Done
War doesn’t come lightly, it takes lives, destroys homes, and brings nations to its knees. Chris was a cowboy turned seal, after examining the movie you can see that this plays a big part in him having drive to be able to make it through the war. As the movie goes on there is a time when Chris is sitting at home staring at a blank T.V. Some dramatic music is playing building tension. Yet the key point is we start to hear screams, and gunshots, they start to get louder and louder until his wife comes and interrupts his thoughts. This displays Chris's PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) very well, and is one of his encounters with it.

According to Josh Furlong of Ksl 5 news, that having stricter gun laws doesn't keep crime rates down. There was a research done at Harvard University on countries that have strict gun laws have higher crime rates, but countries that have less gun laws have lower crime rates. This article is credible because the research was done by a very respectable university. Yes I agree with this article 100%. It's like telling a hockey player to play a game without giving him skates or a hockey stick, but allowing the other team to have all their gear.

I have decided to change my topic to Gun Control. This sparked my interest because I have been around it longer and it means more to me. Some of the research I have been conducting is helping me a lot in finding more about my topic. Gun control does not decrease violence, Study Finds (Josh Furlong) https://www.ksl.com/?sid=26639259. This post gives a very informational stand on guns and violence. The stud is based on European countries. There is a strong correlation between more guns and less violence, to less guns more violence. This is backed up with facts and statistics, this something I like very well.
