Sometimes, when a wishing well has taken many, many offerings, all that gold starts to attract wildlife…

k but if u haven’t seen the guy ritchie sherlock films u don’t get it but they fully wrote holmes as in love w watson. like undeniably in love. In the first ten mins holmes refuses to take a Single case for three months bc watson won’t go with him. he locks himself in his room for two straight weeks, drugs the dog, and shoots the wall for attention bc watson is moving out. he says the world outside his room has nothing to offer until watson asks him to go to dinner & immediately agrees. he humiliates mary bc he’s jealous she can marry watson and he can’t. he goes to a fight club to Feel Something bc he knows john is slipping away from him. there’s never any “oh well just bros being bros” the whole tone towards it is just “ofc he’s in love w watson that’s one of his defining character traits”

so i wore a pride flag pin to work the other day and the kids were all interested (obviously) (find me a classroom of preschoolers who are not obsessed with rainbows) (i'll wait) so they crowded around to see.
"aww!" they said, "it's a flag!!"
but the thing is: they're little. a lot of them don't really have a handle on all their mouth sounds yet.
such as, notably, that tricky tricky "L" sound.

Superman desperately scanning the street during a fight to find the most morally acceptable car to throw at his opponent, knowing that not everybody has insurance, and loss of transportation can ruin a life -
A wave of incredible relief washes over him as he spots the hard geometric lines and silver paintless sheen of a Cybertruck.

To my (admittedly limited) knowledge the whole renting of ancestral homes was decently common, or at least not unheard of at the time. It's seen in Persuasion too, with the Elliot's fucking off to Bath so they can let out their stately home to an admiral.
Basically you have person A who owns a Big Estate That Has Been In The Family For Generations, but their wealth is predominantly in the form of that big estate rather than, say, a pile of money. Being a big estate there's often going to be some form of farming going on somewhere that can bring in money and person A may well have some form of gentry profession that brings in money, but it is very easy for person A to get into a position where they need a lot more money than they actually have, despite the fact that person A owns the big estate.
Enter person B who has acquired a Good Lot Of Money one way or another. In the regency period you get a lot of people going into the Napoleonic wars with nothing but a can do attitude and coming back with a LOT of money, much like both the admiral and the captain from Persuasion. But there are also plenty of other ways to have obtained a lot of money while being without possession of a Grand Stately Home of one's own, both as a younger son of a younger son or as a nobody. We are heading into the industrial revolution, after all.
So you have person A with a Big Fancy House and No Money and you have person B with A Lot Of Money and No Fancy House and Something To Prove, so person A rents out a portion or the entirety of their Big Fancy House for a time and everyone's happy(ish)
Jane Austen scholar folks/Regency era historians:
In light of that whole Bleak House exercise, I'm finally asking this question I've always had, but never been able to successfully use a search engine to answer. I've read this book at least a hundred times and I've studied history (but not any deep dives on England at that period) and I really wish I knew what was going on here.
Right at the beginning of Pride & Prejudice, Mrs. Bennet kicks things off by asking her husband if he's heard that "Netherfield Hall is let at last?"
Which is to say, that it's been rented.
So my question is: who is Mr. Bingley's landlord?
Was there a system of untitled gentry gaining enough wealth to be allowed to rent a great house? Was Mr. Bingley true bourgeoisie and they just let anyone with enough cash get away with it? Or did the Bingleys become unmoored from any kind of ancestral home by being in a 'younger sons of younger sons' kind of situation?
I really have no clue and would love to learn.

The fact that some people say they’re speaking “intersectionally” when they say that trans men and mascs are in a position where they have a positive “man” and a negative “trans” and that those don’t compound to make anything worse.
That’s not how intersectionality works! Intersectionality isn’t a math problem!

Losing my mind at this poor girl in Argentina who found a kitten on the side of the road and adopted it only to find out it was a freaking jaguarundi. Look at that fucking thing. That's a whole ass kiddy cat

Everyone warns you agaist going to the supermarket hungry, but nobody tells you about the dangers of going there too full: I do not want any of these things, for I will never require any food at all!
