Statements of Purpose
Through the research in our class, I think the main reason for the popularity of Sad G*rl is the widespread spread on social media. The main purpose of my project is to explore the negative effects of social media on people in different contexts, or whether social media is the main cause of people's sadness. We explored in different places for a week, and my research on this project has made progress to varying degrees. Through visiting the Benton Museum, writing feedback and writing my own poems, I found that sometimes exploration is not necessarily one-sided, and people can express their emotions through other means such as painting. When I visited the Dodd archive, I went through different archives and found documents on children's mental health, which also made me realize that people have been paying attention to children's mental health for a long time, in the early days before the advent of social media, people began to notice and record whether it was because of education, or war. However, as time has changed, the problems in the early days have not helped me much in this project. So I found some research in the school library, published by Punjabi Pooja: Examining the Relationship Between COVID-Related Social Media Exposure and Mental Health Symptoms." which tested the relationship between college students' mental health outcomes and positive/negative exposure to covid-19 related social media, as well as the moderating effects of covid-19 related positive social media exposure and past trauma, showed a significant correlation between their high levels of fear and depression. Although this range is limited to college students and during covid-19, I believe the results would still be the same under different conditions, because the results show that social media can have a significant impact on adolescents' mental health, especially in a negative way.

Painting from Benton

Ekphrastic poem
Lilies and Orchids, soft and bright,
in the vase, bath in light,
They sway and dance, in tranquil air,
bringing peace, beyond compare
Lilies white, Orchids fair,
Nature embrace, beyond compare

Main Idea
The Sad G*rl archetype serves as a valuable lens through which to explore mental health and identity, offering insights into the complexities of emotional experiences. By examining the Sad G*rl's portrayal in music, art, and popular culture, we can theorize her as a reflection of societal attitudes towards mental health issues and gendered expectations. Through her melancholic demeanor and struggles with inner turmoil, the Sad G*rl sheds light on the intersections of mental illness, gender norms, and societal pressures. By exploring their account, we can challenge generating roots about mental health and promote conversations that prioritize empathy, understanding, and destigmatization, probing the ultimate causes of Sad G*rl.
