like idk im still having swag thoughts but its really the curse of. the whole thing.
that everyone wants the raw vulnerable cringe authenticity of what experimental artists can create and then big name pop musicians can tap into it too and take it and spin it within their little industry machines and make it uncringe and make it palatable to the general public. i wouldn't want to see dijon make swag but he kinda already sorta did like 80% but jb could never make absolutely so. and thats where i like swag but i dont really see it going down in the canon of music or pop culture or generational memory the way that purpose or idk journals did. mostly bc the stuff that swag is already exists and it was made by dijon/mkgee/bon iver

dazed magazine has said what i've been thinking like i know dazed is that mainstream underground alt indie elitist voice with a mkgee bias but. they're right
SWAG sounds less like Justin Bieber and more like Two Star & the Dream Police: All-Star Edition, sonically rooting itself in Mk.gee’s washed-out guitar noodling – all well and good, except that the man himself is only credited on one of the tracks. There’s also a heaped tablespoon of Dijon’s neon-lit R&B thrown into the mix, too. Between all of this, and much like his conversations with Druski, Justin’s voice seems to firmly take a backseat.
also this from pitchfork
SWAG’s production is often cavernous, though not quite in the polished, neon-lit vein of a Weeknd album. Instead, there’s a focus on dusty timbres, blown-out drums, and live instrumentation, all echoing into infinity. Mk.gee’s fingerprints are felt throughout, even when he’s not explicitly credited as a track’s producer, with technically intricate guitar lines weaving through the mix. “First Place” pairs compressed, distorted drum programming with synth leads that would sound at home in an abandoned shopping mall food court, while “Daisies” leans fully into guitar-heavy blue-eyed soul. “Go Baby” occasionally resembles contemporary Bon Iver records with its watery keys and dreamy vocal stacks, which isn’t a huge surprise given their shared collaborator in Dijon.
like idk it is very post-justice contemp adult pop its just idk jb as a pop brand, sound, voice does take a backseat to the sonic concept of post-two star experimental retro pop r&b. like swag could be a dijon album without the interludes and personal life story lyrics it sonically sounds like if dijon dropped a follow up to absolutely with coogie as a lead single and if dijon wanted to write basic radio assured tiktokable safe shit with his bestie collaborator mkgee
also i think sweet spot is a great and hilarious song. i love sexyy but i kinda wanna see some remixes of that
