Once Upon a Time in Space character designs!
Some notes:
Since the mechs themselves had a few Disney references (the seven survivor’s dwarf attributes, Adam, mentions of the sleeping beauty fairies, etc.) I didn’t feel quite as bad paying small homage to the Disney designs. I had a hard enough time finding enough to fit together without trying to block out Disney.
Music inspo: since a lot of the songs are based on sea shanties, and as the first album, it’s not a surprise this one has a pirate theme. I think the mechs started with a certain vibe and carried it over into the album.
The fashion style is meant to be a mix of Middle Ages (the fairy tales) and 1500s (pirate theme).

Cinders studies her face, a little dumbfounded. “You really don’t even have a word for people who are different like this?”
She blinks, tilting her head. “You have brown eyes. I have short hair. You like pastel colors and I like to kiss women. It’s just… a thing. Do people really care on Perrault?”
Cinders and Rose discover their cultural differences in their views of queerness. It only highlights more differences.

So I have obviously gone the route of "Snow was so grief-stricken over what Cole did to her sister she had to kill her prior self and be reborn as a terrorist about it" in my interpretations of ouatis, as has everyone else who's ever written about them, to my knowledge.
However, I do find it striking that Snow/General White doesn't mention Rose once in Mirror, Mirror, and neither does Lorenzo. The clearest and most extended look we get into General White's psyche, and there's not even a vague allusion to her twin sister. General White is angry over what Cole has done to her. Whether this includes taking her sister from her is unspecified.
This leads me to think that it would be entirely canon-compliant (based solely on the text; whatever the mechs intended isn't important right now) to interpret that Snow and Rose had a strained relationship and that avenging Rose was not necessarily one of General White's high priorities.
(Rambling about how I would imagine this dynamic beneath the cut)
In this interpretation, I like to think that Rose and Snow's differences came between them and that Snow resented the glory Rose earned as Cole's finest warrior. Remember, they had "little in common", and peace was one of Snow's core values before the wedding. Snow couldn't see past the violence Rose did and kept her distance from her for both personal peace and political appearances. She only really attended the wedding out of obligation.
After the slaughter and ensuing assassination attempt, Snow was just pissed. Everything her sister had done, all the years of favoritism, all the pain and hurt and conflict, and now Snow had lost everything because of her. She was still facing the betrayal from Cole, but there was also that final rift with Rose, that final way her stupidity and violence hurt Snow.
So she became General White, and she became better than Rose ever was, and she vowed to destroy everything that ever let people like Rose do the things they did.
#I love Rose having been the most important person in the world to Snow and will keep writing them that way in 1003#but this interpretation does fascinate me#and honestly if I'd noticed it before that grief was foundational to 1003 I might have gone with this version of things#ouatis#once upon a time in space#meta#my meta#the mechanisms#the mechs#general white ouatis#snow ouatis

Just found out that the song upon which "Red Rose" from ouatis was based might have a bit more complex origin than i thought lol
Let's start from the fact that this particular song has many versions. Most of them are centred around the wedding. (And this is the version The Mechanisms used)
But i saw some notes that originally this song was supposed to be about a real rose. A flower.
"The lyrics are then:
Rose, rose, rose, rose
Shall I ever see thee red?
Aye, marry, that thou wilt
An thoult but stay"

Information above was taken from this site
If somebody finds more accurate source - please let me know 🫶 as for now i couldn't find any other information about it
But yeah. Seems a bit interesting, doesn't it?
#ooooh interesting!#i have no insight I’ve never looked into this but still interesting#rose red#the mechs#ouatis
