ROCKS RoCKS ROCkS i love to draw the rocks!

[ID: My hand holding a graph paper sketchbook with a brushpen drawing of rocks at low tide, above the actual rocks themselves. They're covered in thready chartreuse algae, which I suggest in black ink with scribbly textures and hatching. I've also drawn the sea water bubbling and rippling around the rocks, and suggested bladderwrack seaweed dumpling the water as it clings to submerged rocks.]

I drew it sitting between the boulders of the hurricane barrier, and the foreground focuses on their texture and bulk extending all the way to the pebbly waterline. I suggested the horizon with just a few lines for the bay and seawall. The real ones line up almost exactly behind the sketch.]

The month of May marks a transition time in Central Appalachia's forests as the canopy's vibrant green cloak closes above the forest floor, and the spring ephemerals go dormant and fade away. The forest now belongs to the ferns, fungi, mosses, and lichens, which collectively drive nature's great recycling engine. The next great spectacle, just around the corner, is the mountain laurel bloom, with a few plants already busting out their colors.

Photos from two different weekend hikes around the Cheat River Canyon (which, along with Dolly Sods and the New River Gorge, has one of the best laurel blooms in Central Appalachia).
