Prompt - Faith/Buffy - talking and cleaning each other's wounds

(this is set right after the s7 finale!)

After everything--after the final battle, after driving the bus a little further up the road, after finding a motel that would take them, all of them, even covered in blood and bruises, after settling into the room she was sharing with Dawn, after going with Giles to grab a dozen orders of burgers and fries, after making sure everyone was fed and watered and housed and healing--Buffy decided to talk a walk.

It was the first time in months she had really walked, outside of a patrol. It felt strange to be out at night, her senses still heightened but her guard a little down. She knew someone was behind her, but she wasn't worried. She let herself be followed past the end of the sidewalk, down a hill, just far enough away from the highway that she supposed the grassy spot could be called a clearing.

"Faith," she said simply, no greeting, just that name breaking through the silence of the cool night air.

She turned around and sat down, criss cross in the grass. Faith stood atop the hill just a few yards away.

"Hey, Buff," she said.

There was a glint in her eye, something youthful. Buffy thought she'd like to watch her drop to her knees and roll down that hill, to watch her laugh, to see her smile without all that careful snark.

She didn't do any of that. She didn't. But she did sort of slide on her way down, and she did join Buffy on the ground. She did look up at the stars.

Buffy looked, too.

"So, you ditched Robin I see," she mused.

"You know me," Faith said wryly. "Can't tie me down."

Buffy just ducked her head and smiled. She leaned back on her hands to look at the stars. She could feel Faith’s gaze fall to her face. She didn’t meet it. 

“Do you know any of the constellations?” she asked. 

“Fuck no,” Faith said. She laughed sharply. “Why would I?”

“I think they’re neat,” Buffy said. She pointed upwards towards a cluster of stars. “That’s Ursa Major. It has the Big Dipper in it.”

Faith scooted to sit beside Buffy, leaning in to match her view. She squinted, trying to follow the point of Buffy’s hand, remarkably patient. 

“Do you see those three stars?” Buffy asked. “That’s the tip of the tail. It’s connected to that box. That’s the Big Dipper. It’s all supposed to be a bear.”

“Huh,” Faith mused. “I’m not sure I see it. What else is there?”

“That’s all I know,” Buffy admitted. 

She laughed lightly. Faith smiled at her, teasing, but not too much. Not too far. 

“Maybe I’ll learn more now.”

Faith shrugged. 

“Yeah. Maybe.”

They were silent for a moment. It was heavy. In many ways, Faith was the only person to have ever really understood her. Even with these new Slayers, these Potentials, Faith was the only one to really get it. Buffy had been so lonely for so long that she used to think she’d give anything to be understood like that, that she’d die before she ever was; but then there was Faith, and she was learning that, to be known like that… 

She was the shore, and Faith was the tide, and all of the rushing, crashing waves. They always met like that, crashing into one another over and over. Buffy wondered if Faith thought she was the shore, or if she felt like the shore, and Buffy like the wave. She couldn’t imagine Faith as anything other than the wave. 

“What do you see?” Buffy asked. 

“Hm?” 

Faith’s head lolled lazily over towards Buffy. Her eyebrows were pinched together. Her hair was thick around her face. Buffy wanted to reach out and touch it, maybe pull it back. 

“If you don’t see a bear, what do you see?”

Faith’s lips turned up in amusement. 

“An aardvark,” she said. 

Buffy laughed. 

“What? What even is an aardvark?”

Faith set her jaw to the side in annoyance, but she was smiling. 

“C’mon, you know. Like in Pink Panther. They’re, like, anteaters I think?”

“They’re like anteaters or they are anteaters?” Buffy asked. 

“I don’t fucking know,” Faith said. “But I know enough to know that that clump of stars looks much more like an aardvark than a bear. Or an anteater, even.”

Buffy looked at it, hard. 

“I guess I could see an anteater,” she mused. “Which maybe means I could see an aardvark?”

Faith smiled at her, wide and toothy, and Buffy felt that wave crash down, felt the own deepset smile in her cheeks. It was too much. Faith was always too much for her. She forced her smile down. 

Faith’s went with hers. 

"You should get back to him," Buffy said.

"Who?"

Faith was annoyed.

"Robin," Buffy said anyway.

Faith rolled her eyes.

"He's got, like, a million people looking after him. Normal people always do. But no one ever really checks in on The Slayer, do they?"

Faith was smirking something fierce and jaded, but there was a sadness in the corner of her mouth, a longing. She reached for Buffy’s hand, only she didn’t, her fingers circling Buffy’s forearm. She pressed down on a still healing slash in the side of Buffy’s arm, the one that had stretched from her elbow nearly to her wrist. It was shorter now, and it was all but totally closed up, but it still stung to Faith’s touch. Buffy didn’t grimace, though, and she didn’t pull away. 

Faith pulled a packet of wet wipes out of her pocket. 

“Did you even let Willow look at you?” she asked. Her voice was soft and low. 

“Other people needed her.” Buffy shrugged. “Other people need far more than me.”

Faith pushed her lips out into what was almost a pout, if it wasn’t so genuine. 

“That’s not really true, is it?” she asked. 

Buffy didn’t answer. Faith ran a wipe across Buffy’s thin cut. It came away dirty, and a little bit bloody. 

“I need a shower,” Buffy said, suddenly self conscious. “I wanted to let Dawn go first.”

“Of course you did,” Faith said. 

The little smile on her face conveyed some unrecognizable emotion, some open secret. She rolled up the short sleeve of Buffy’s shirt to expose a bruise on her bicep. She pulled out another wipe. 

“I’m not sure bruises require cleaning,” Buffy said, but Faith only smiled wider. 

“Shhhh,” Faith said. “Hush up and let me work.”

Buffy stayed quiet while Faith attended to the bruise. She stayed quiet when Faith wiped the dried blood from behind her ear; and when she furthered the rip in her pants, the one just above her knee; when she slid the wipe up the scrape on her lower thigh, fingers brushing under the edge of her pant; and when she cleaned off the series of scrapes on the backs of her knuckles. 

The tenderness of it all, and the knowing, and the crashing, made Buffy need to reciprocate. 

She spotted the remnants of a gash on Faith’s thumb and stopped her, taking a wipe from the pack, her fingers dancing at the edges of the wound. Faith’s hands were warm. They always ran warmer when they were healing. Buffy had noticed it many times in herself. It was nice to notice it in someone else. 

She pushed Faith’s jacket off her shoulders, intending to work her way up her arms until she noticed the dark patch of blood on one of Faith’s shoulders. She pushed Faith’s shirt away from it, frowning. The cut was still wide, even if it had clearly been deeper. Like the one on Buffy’s forearm, it was all but closed up, but little spots of fresh blood still peeked through. 

“It’s nothing,” Faith said when Buffy had been staring for too long, when her fingers had traced the rippling skin too much, too intimately. 

“It’s something,” Buffy insisted. 

She began to clean off the blood, dried or otherwise. It took a few wipes, but once it was clean, it didn’t look as bad. Satisfied, she moved on, noticing a smaller scrap at the base of Faith’s neck, so far back it was almost on her shoulder blade. She dug into the plastic pack of wipes but came up empty. 

“You’re out of wipes,” she said. 

Faith shrugged. 

“No worries.”

But Buffy was worried. She stared at the spot. And then she kissed it. 

Faith stiffened at first. It almost made Buffy panic, but she stayed strong, let her lips linger, tried to pool some of her own superhuman healing into them, tried to be the shore. She kissed the spot on Faith’s shoulder, too, the slight taste of sweat and iron buzzing on her mouth. 

When she pulled back, she tried not to be shy. Faith was never shy. She met her gaze with something strong and deep, deep like the ocean. She held it. Buffy felt held. 

“I have one more,” Faith said. 

She tugged her shirt up to reveal a patch of yellowish bruising just at the top of her pelvic bone. Buffy’s eyes dropped to it, then flickered back up to Faith’s face. Faith just looked at her, still holding up her shirt. Buffy bent down and brought her mouth to Faith’s hot skin. She traced every inch of the bruise with her lips, languid, vigilant. She felt Faith’s hand cradle her jaw, fingers playing with the wispy edge of her hair. Buffy looked up, her mouth still on Faith’s stomach. She didn’t dare move her lips. They just looked at each other, crashing and retreating and crashing once more. 

“We should get back,” Faith said after a while.

She looked like she regretted it when Buffy pulled away.

“We should,” Buffy agreed. 

She regretted it, too.
