One of the most fascinating and well-executed aspects of the show is in my opinion the relationship between Seon-ho and his father and the scene where Nam Jeon drives Hwi to stab himself with the poisoned blade offers, I feel, quite the insight into both father and son.
The audience has come to know Nam Jeon as a cruel, calculating man. Every monstrous act he commits has a purpose. His abusive actions against Seon-ho are, too, a way for him to control and manipulate his son, make sure he doesn't rebel.
Why, then, order his men to remove Seon-ho from the room, when he forces Hwi to kill himself? Would it not be more consistent with the portrayal of the character thus far to have Hwi killed in front of him? To terrorize and traumatize him further and by doing so ensure that he never rises up against him? Seon-ho is restrained and poses no threat. Yet, he makes sure that he is not in the room and that the doors are closed before he gives the knife to Hwi.
My interpretation is that it is Nam Jeon's way of showing, in his twisted way, a hint of mercy towards Seon-ho. To save him from witnessing his only friend die in such a brutal manner. A distorted expression of love towards the son he both loves and resents.
Seon-ho's reactions throughout the scene are also interesting. The way his demeanor changes from haughty and defiant to almost childishly pleading, begging for Hwi to be saved, is a brilliant way to show that, no matter how much he tries not to show it, what Seon-ho fears the most is not Bang-won, or the King, or even death, but a person with far less power than all of them; his father.

“I firmly believe in small gestures: pay for their coffee, hold the door for strangers, over tip, smile or try to be kind even when you don’t feel like it, pay compliments, chase the kid’s runaway ball down the sidewalk and throw it back to him, try to be larger than you are— particularly when it’s difficult. People do notice, people appreciate. I appreciate it when it’s done to (for) me. Small gestures can be an effort, or actually go against our grain (“I’m not a big one for paying compliments…”), but the irony is that almost every time you make them, you feel better about yourself.”
