The Apocryphon of John is a Sethian Gnostic text attributed to John of Patmos. It is one of the texts that Iraneus rails against as heretical in his work "Against Heresies".

In the text, John is mocked by a Pharisee (the sect of Judaism which became modern rabbinical Judaism) for not understanding the nature of Christ. John, unable to mount a sufficient response, wanders into the desert, where he receives a vision of the resurrected Christ and a secret teaching on his nature.

This is an early Christian example of what is today known as "cope".
