Asus F555LA-NS72 Laptop Review

Good news for you, Asus F555LA-NS72 is called a premium laptop with battery such as Asus C22-UX31 Battery, Asus C23-UX31 Battery, Asus UX31E-DH72 Battery, Asus UX31E-RY009V Battery, Asus UX31 Battery, Asus UX31A-R4004H Battery, Asus C21N1401 Battery, Asus C21PQCH Battery, Asus X455 Battery, Asus X455LA Battery, Asus X455LD Battery, Asus X455LA-WX082D Battery. But there’s one thing that is confusing: the low price point. Because, can you really get a premium notebook for so cheap? Is there a reason to go for this computer or just stay away from it? I’ll let you know my opinion on that below!

Processor and memory are good in Asus F555LA-NS72. The former is Intel Core i7-5500U (5th generation unit) with the vital stats being a dual-core configuration, 2.4GHz clock speed and 3.0GHz turbo boost. The CPU Mark score is a high(ish) 4000, so it’s a power user friendly processor. The 8GB memory is also a good amount these days, my guess is that 99% of people will be more than happy with it.

It’s not a bad, however not so good thing either, that the storage drive is a platter-based one. The 1TB 5400RPM HDD gives you a lot of space but lacks in performance – if you wanted to make this computer boot up (and in general, operate) faster, you’d need to take the HDD out and put a solid-state drive in. That’s not a maneuver everybody can do, but if you’re tech-savvy it’s very possible.

Asus F555LA-NS72 doesn’t have a fancy display, just a 15.6-inch screen featuring a maximum resolution of 1366×768. So no Full HD here, that’s a bummer for some. Also, it’s not a touchscreen. The display has a webcam embedded on top of it, it features VGA (640×480) resolution which is good for video chatting but not for filming high quality YouTube videos.

The ports include usual USB connectors (two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0) and one full-size HDMI-out for an external monitor. A 100Mbps LAN port is present for wired networking. There’s also a WiFi card, but I’ve received reports it’s not the advertised ac standard, just the regular bgn. Bluetooth 4.0 is supported.

DVD burner and media card reader (SD cards only!) are included.

The 2-cell battery is not a heavyweight power source, expect a maximum of four hours when surfing the web.

Gaming can be an issue with Asus F555LA-NS72, the integrated Intel HD 5500 graphics chip is not a beast. Playing some new and demanding games may work on low settings, for example GTA 5 at ~25FPS, however Fallout 4 would lag too much at 15-20FPS. Luckily, not all games require so much from the graphics chip, like Counter-Strike: Go which would run at +35FPS even when higher settings were used. Also bear in mind it’s not possible to install dedicated graphics.

Asus F555LA-NS72 could be worth your while if you’re a power user (or techie). There’s the low-voltage Core i7 processor and 8GB RAM speeding the system up, however the 5400RPM hard drive can be a bottleneck. In short, all kinds of software activities will work, especially if you upgrade to SSD. Too bad the display has no Full HD support – it could just be expected for this price. Gaming is a tough question; you can’t keep high settings due to integrated graphics. If this kind of good-looking and pretty fast laptop from a trusted brand interests you, and you are possibly ready to upgrade the HDD, I’d recommend checking the computer out.

Acer TravelMate 2702WLMi Review

With an aim to make this site both a useful resource for design and hardware enthusiasts alike I figured it’s about time I penned my first product review. Having just received my new Acer Travelmate 2702WLMi with battery like Acer AS16A5K Battery, Acer AC14B3K Battery, Acer AS16A8K Battery, Acer E5-575 Battery, Acer E5-774 Battery, Acer F5-573 Battery, Acer E5-475G Battery, Acer CB5-571 Battery, Acer ES1-311 Battery, Acer CB3-531 Battery, Acer ES1-131 Battery, Acer B115-MP Battery I decided to knock up a little review of it, concentrating on both the areas of performance and design. First off I’d like to say that for the very budget friendly price of 549 British pounds ($965 USD) I was not expecting a beastie machine on par with the likes of the Sony Vaio or Apple Powerbook, and was pleasantly surprised with what the laptop did deliver.

First up aesthetics. From the outset the TravelMate’s dimensions suggest that it is anything but a “Travel Mate” but more of a desktop replacement; measuring in at almost 2″ thick. The 15.4″ widescreen configuration is welcome as trying to work on any form of design using lower end 12″ displays is nigh on impossible and the fact that the TravelMate offers widescreen makes it ideal for watching films. Despite being bulky, the laptop’s exterior exudes the infamous Acer style; adopting their glossy silver finish which, from a distance, is indecipherable from aluminium (it is in fact just plastic). The curved edges and sleek lines give the case a suave feel which effectively conceals its budget price.

The 3.00GHz Pentium 4 Prescott CPU is the main downfall of the laptop. Although it provides a powerful processing base it is also the main cause of the laptop’s portability issues as Acer have had to design the chassis around the oversized heat sinks which are necessary to cool the beastly chip. On the bottom of the case Acer have placed two 40mm fans which were actually not bedded properly upon delivery (I’m currently awaiting a courier to take it back for correction) but the fans will still be irritatingly loud once amended. The Pentium 4’s massive power consumption levels also mean that the life of a fully charged battery is only predicted by Acer themselves to be an hour but, unless left idle, battery life actually only comes in at a measly 40 minutes, enhancing the machines suitability as a desktop replacement.

The notebook is also wireless ready, offering both traditional 802.11b WiFi reception and Bluetooth. Acer has considered both of these in the design of the case and has placed two large buttons on the front of the chassis which enable you to activate or deactivate the wireless reception.

Overall the TravelMate is a strong performer for a very competitive price. It has the capabilities and components often associated with higher end systems, but unfortunately lack the portability and quietness to match. The Acer “folio” design packs attractiveness into the machine in usual abundance and gives the impression of much higher value. Unfortunately it is let down by the concord like sound levels and abysmal battery life, but if you’re looking to replace your desktop with a semi-portable system the TravelMate has what it takes, and I’m looking forward to the biceps I’ll reap from lugging the machine around.

The Acer Aspire One D250-1165 is a low-cost version of the new D250 series netbooks and features a smaller battery and no Bluetooth in order to drop the retail price below $300. One very interesting item of note is that the D250 is actually slightly thinner than the original Acer Aspire One 150 series which used a smaller 8.9-inch screen. Like the original Aspire One, the D250 uses glossy plastics on the top of the screen cover as well as around the entire LCD. At times the reflective boarder does get on your nerves if you are in a brightly lit room with many sources of glare.

Acer claims that the Acer Aspire One D250-1165 provides “up to 3 hours of battery life” from the 3-cell battery. Even if the D250 indeed lasted that long it would be relatively pathetic compared to the ASUS Eee PC 1005HA with a 6-cell battery that lasts more than 9 hours.

In our test with the screen brightness set to 70%, wireless active, and XP set to the laptop/portable power profile the system stayed on for 2 hours and 32 minutes of constant use. If we turned down the screen brightness to the lowest setting and disabled Wi-Fi then I’m reasonably sure the D250 could have lasted more than 3 hours. It’s worth mentioning that the Aspire One D250 series is also available with a 6-cell battery, and that the 6-cell battery version should provide better battery life.

Although the Acer Aspire One D250-1165 offers a great value for less than $300, I can’t help but feel a little less than impressed. Acer used a small keyboard, small touchpad, and worst of all a small battery on what is otherwise a fantastic netbook.

Considering how crowded the netbook market has become over the last year I really expected Acer to deliver more with their 10-inch netbook. Yes, it costs less than $300, but that price looks less impressive when other netbooks have better keyboards, better touchpads, and MUCH better battery life for less than $400.

As I’ve said before with netbooks, I’d like to see a higher resolution screen and better graphics solution, but when it comes to the Aspire One D250 I’d settle for a better keyboard, touchpad, and battery. Still, if you’re looking for a low-cost laptop to take with you to the coffee shop then the Acer Aspire One D250-1165 might prove to be a very good choice.

Asus ZenBook UX51VZ-XB71 Review

The Asus ZenBook offers a sleek and durable design with strong performance and incredible display, but all those features come at a steep cost.

Asus refreshes its 15.6-inch ZenBook with the introduction of the ZenBook UX51VZ-XB71. The new notebook with battery like Acer AL13B3K Battery, Acer AP13B8K Battery, Acer KT.00403.018 Battery, Acer M5-583 Battery, Acer R7-571 Battery, Acer V5-573 Battery, Acer AC14A8L Battery, Acer V7-581 Battery, Acer VN7-791 Battery, Acer AC15B7L Battery, Acer KT.0030G.001 Battery, Acer VN7-571 Battery doesn’t mark much of a departure from last year’s UX51VZ-DH71, utilizing the same build design as it predecessor with a few minor technical upgrades. Instead the big change comes from the device’s upgraded 2880 x 1620 resolution Retina-like display.

However, the Apple MacBook Pro alternative offers much more than just an eye-catching display; with an Intel Core i7 processor, NVidia dedicated graphics and dual SSDs the Asus ZenBook provides strong performance in its portable form factor. With one of the highest resolution displays on the market and excellent performance the ZenBook may be the company’s most attractive high-end notebook to date, but does that justify the ZenBook’s hefty price point? Little has changed in terms of design for the Asus ZenBook UX51VZ. The device offers the same great look and feel as last year’s model, while retaining the same levels of utility and durability in an even thinner form factor. Offering excellent speaker quality, a comfortable keyboard and ample connectivity, the Asus ZenBook UX51VZ delivers on almost all fronts. With its stylish and durable build, strong performance and high-resolution display the Asus ZenBook provides the perfect alternative to users looking for high-end display oriented device on Microsoft’s platform.

However, for the average user the Asus ZenBook is likely a bit too expensive for what it brings to the table. While the 2880 x 1620 resolution is absolute luxury, most users will find the standard 1920 x 1080 display in the Asus ZenBook UX51VZ-DH71 to be more than suitable and with comparable performance at nearly $1,000 than the 2013 model the DH71 is far friendlier on the wallet as well.

While the Asus ZenBook arguably offers the best substitute to the Apple MacBook Pro, the Pro’s Retina display still manages to come out on top. While the two displays are comparable and the ZenBook offers a brighter display, the MacBook Pro ultimately offers a more detailed image with greater color contrast. Additionally, most of Apple’s applications are “Retina-aware” meaning that the UI elements are enlarged while the actual content gets displayed at 1:1 ratio. Windows users can achieve much of the same functionality by tinkering with the options, but the Windows 8 tile screen is not optimized for a large resolution display such as this.

The Asus ZenBook proves to be a great solution for users who need a high-resolution display on Microsoft’s operating system, but for everyone else there are likely more affordable notebook options that will meet your needs.

Acer Predator 15 Super Gaming Laptop

It’s a very sweet rig for a player, but there’s one downside to this: the computer cost is huge. Let me tell you if this Acer is actually worth it…

Hell yeah, this Acer was made for gaming. It has GeForce GTX980M, a player-oriented graphics card with 4GB dedicated GGDR5 memory. Everything will be smooth with it; for example GTA 5 you can play with ultra details and 1080p and get over 40 frames per second. The Witcher 3 isn’t much worse, with similar settings you’ll get 30-40 FPS.

It’s not hard to guess, this computer rocks for any kind of use. There’s a processor called Intel Core i7-6700HQ inside; it runs on a 2.6GHz clock speed and has a 3.5GHz turbo feature too. Core amount is four. It does an excellent job in benchmarks, getting around 8000 points in CPU Mark. Not many other processors can reach anywhere close that.

Acer Predator 15 (G9-591-70XR) features 16GB memory, the DDR4 type. I think it comes on two 8GB modules, leaving other two slots on the system free. Maximum memory is anyway a whopping 64GB, but not even a heavyweight gamer would need that much.

A 256GB solid-state drive (M.2, SATA 3) is what you’re getting for storage here. On top of that, there’s 1TB 7200RPM hard drive included. It’s a great combination, giving you both performance and raw storage. Both drives can of course be replaced in case you want to.

Acer Predator 15 (G9-591-70XR) seems to include four USB 3.0 ports, but in addition there’s also the modern USB 3.1 Type C connector that supports, among other things, Thunderbolt 3. Other video outputs are a full-size HDMI and DisplayPort.

The disc drive is a nice one here, a Blu-Ray burner. Of course it also works with CDs and DVDs. In case you need it, SD card slot is available as well.

Fast networking interfaces are included: a 1000Mbps RJ-45 connector for cables and dual-band 2×2 802.11ac WiFi card for wireless networking and Bluetooth 4.1.

Webcam resolution is 1280×720, it’s suitable for video chatting using Skype.

People have been saying good things about the display of Acer Predator 15 (G9-591-70XR), and no wonder why: the 15.6″ screen sports Full HD support and IPS panel, giving closer to 180 degree viewing angles and realistic color reproduction. The display is not touch sensitive, but that’s not often a high priority for gamers.

Running time is never great in these heavyweight gaming laptops, the 8-cell battery won’t likely give more than 1.5-2 hours gameplay time. However, surfing the web and other lighter activities are good for 4 hours with a single charge.

Operating system is pre-loaded here, it’s the Windows 10 Home (64-bit).

The keyboard has a red backlight, although you should be able to change the color with included application.

Indeed Acer Predator 15 (G9-591-70XR) is everything a player can ask for, all games are highly playable and lag should not occur even on maximum settings and Full HD resolution. Naturally, running all software and programs will be a smooth sail too. But it all costs, a lot, and some more. That’s why I can only recommend this Acer for the most avid gamers who won’t settle for anything but the best. If that is you, then going for this laptop would make perfect sense.

We ran a full suite of benchmarks on the N120 and before I give you the numbers, let us talk about what really matters – the usability factor. The best way to describe using a small netbook like the N120 is confining. The ten inch screen is small and takes getting used to – even though I have spent a lot of time with 12 inch notebooks, ten inches is in another league entirely. The 1024×600 screen resolution does not help the situation; the minimum on notebooks these days is 1366×768, which has over 70% more pixels than this display. As I noted earlier, a lot of scrolling will be necessary with this screen, and using two windows side-by-side will be near impossible. I moved the Windows taskbar to the side of the screen to regain some vertical space, but the fact is only so much can be done with 600 pixels. That said, surfing the Internet in full screen mode (press [F11] in Firefox/Internet Explorer) helps alleviate the lack of space.

At 3/8 brightness using the “Normal” power management profile, I managed an amazing eight hours and twenty minutes of battery life while surfing the Internet and word processing. By lowering the brightness further and using a more aggressive power saving profile, more is possible. Keep in mind that the N120 uses a traditional hard disk and not a Solid State Drive (SSD); with an SSD the N120 could go even longer. The system tray battery icon consistently estimated over nine hours of battery life remaining with a 90% charge.

Although the N120 does not match the battery life of the ASUS Eee PC 1000HE, it is almost one half-pound lighter which is significant.

The Samsung N120 should be high on the list for anyone in the 10-inch netbook market. At less than three pounds and with over eight hours of battery life, the N120 makes for a superb traveling companion. A stylish design, great screen, keyboard, and touchpad sweeten the deal.

Users looking to own one of the world’s thinnest 13.3″ notebooks can expect to pay at least $1,900 (price at time the review was written). For that steep price point, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 offers solid performance. The device employs excellent build quality, a responsive Intel i7 processor, and quick data retrieval via the 256GB solid state drive (SSD); but at nearly $2,000 it’s easy to find the lack of a touch-enabled display, 4GB of RAM, and integrated graphics wanting.

However, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 isn’t about raw power, instead it’s about offering impressive performance in as compact a form factor as possible; and in that regard the Samsung Series 9 is nothing short of impressive.

Equipped with and 1.9 GHz Intel i7-3517U processor and integrated graphics the Samsung ATIV Book 9 offers an impressive amount of performance in its condensed package. The machine proves more than up to the task when it comes to basic word and web functions. The notebook is also able to tackle more strenuous office functions such as complicated Excel tables with relative ease.

It’s hard to find many faults with the Samsung ATIV Book 9, as the ultrabook manages to do most things fairly well. The most serious issue that can be raised against the device is its cost. While many of the features of this device are fantastic, many consumers may expect more for its $2,000 price point.

However, the Samsung ATIV Book 9 isn’t for those consumers. This notebook isn’t designed to offer you considerable bang for your buck. Sure the 1.9 GHz processor and 256 GB SSD allow this machine to perform most functions admirably, but the notebook falls short of many comparably priced devices on the market.

Instead the Samsung ATIV Book 9 focuses on one very specific function. To offer as much performance in as small a form factor as possible. With its durable and incredibly thin design and long lasting the battery the Samsung ATIV Book 9 is ideal for travel. Users who don’t mind spending a bit extra will find this luxury travel device an absolute pleasure to use.

There are i7 processor and real SSD speeding the system up, and the unit definitely looks professional. But it’s also very pricey, and in my opinion not everybody should spend this much on a laptop. On the other hand, some people would benefit from having such a powerhouse at their disposal. Who those people are, and what this notebook could do for them, will be discussed in the review below.

It’s a solid set of components you find in the engine room of Lenovo Lavie Z (20FG0013US). The processor is familiar Intel Core i7-5500U which gives you two cores to play with and 2.4GHz clock speed – that will be increased to 3.0GHz with the turbo boost. It’s indeed i7, the processor series considered the best of Intel, however this model features ultra low voltage design – hence the U suffix. You shouldn’t need to worry about excess heat here, but on the other hand performance isn’t on par with “real” i7s. For example, the regular voltage i7-4720HQ gets over 8000 CPU Mark points while this i7-5500U receives around 4000. A huge difference indeed, but I’d say any processor with over 3000 grade is excellent for everyday computing. When it’s 4000 or more, a power user with demanding/simultaneous applications will also enjoy the notebook.

The laptop has 8GB memory available, a proper amount for professionals indeed. I’m not actually sure if you’re able to put in more, there are no information about the possibility for RAM upgrade on Lenovo website. The 256GB solid-state drive means excellent system performance, and you won’t have to deal with hard drive upgrades here.

Lenovo Lavie Z (20FG0013US) is quite expensive, but it’s no gamer’s dream. See, the computer doesn’t have any kind of dedicated graphics card – only the basic Intel HD 5500 that comes integrated on the processor. However, it doesn’t outright suck, you’re able to get playable frame rates if you reduce eye candy. To give you an example, the popular Grand Theft Auto 5 would get ca. 25 FPS played on medium settings and 1366×768 resolution. League of Legends, on the other hand, is likely to give +40FPS with Full HD and default settings on.

Lenovo Lavie Z (20FG0013US) features a small anti-glare 13.3″ display, but its specifications look rather interesting. For example, it features 2560×1440 maximum resolution, a so-called Quad HD. It’s certainly a professional’s choice but it’s uncertain if you actually need that much in a 13-inches display, the icons and text will surely look small. Of course the resolution can always be changed to, say, Full HD or less. And somebody working with photos or videos would appreciate the high resolution anyway. Touch isn’t supported, you’ll have to deal with operating system (pre-installed Windows 8.1) using keyboard and mouse.

Lenovo Lavie Z (20FG0013US) features all the common ports a 13.3 inches notebook often has. There are two USB 3.0s at your disposal, also HDMI-out is there so you can plug in an external display. As you might guess, there’s no DVD drive (no space for that), but feel free to get an external drive for discs.

This thing connects to Internet via 802.11 A/C standard WiFi card. Bluetooth 4.0 works too. RJ-45 port isn’t available, but with USB adapter you can get that as well.

Other things you might put to good use are SD card slot and 720p front-facing webcam.

Portability is the best thing in Lenovo Lavie Z (20FG0013US). It weighs a mere 1.9 pounds, compare that to 5 pounds weight of a regular 15.6″ laptop. Also thickness is 0.67 inches, much less these units often are. Finding place in your purses/backpacks will be easy and you won’t get exhausted carrying this Lenovo around.

The battery specifications were not available, but benchmarks show it is good for 7 hours web browsing. It’s not the best of ultrabooks, but lasting almost a full day is still quite an achievement.

The keyboard seems to be “Japanese” style, in that some keys are in different places than you’re probably used to. For example, Delete and Insert keys are on the front row, next to the space bar. Also keep in mind the keyboard doesn’t have backlight.

Lenovo Lavie Z (20FG0013US) offers plenty of power for guys with heavyweight applications – that would include power users, office workers with special programs and digital artists. But gamers I don’t include on that list, because despite all these powerful components, one essential thing is missing: a dedicated graphics card. With the current integrated chip, gamers are not going to find much use for this notebook. Others however are, but the computer would offer much better value with a dedicated graphics. Anyway, if you don’t care about gaming and have the money, by all means go for it. This Lenovo won’t slow down, no matter what (non-gaming) applications you throw at it!

Let me tell you briefly about Lenovo 80QQ00JGUS, a new laptop with an attractive price tag and entry-level performance. This kind of a notebook has its uses, but there are also some disadvantages you should know about… So without further ado, my professional opinion below!

You will find it quite faster than older i3s, this one getting ~3500 points in CPU Mark. Using those everyday programs is a breeze, you can even try to throw in advanced, specialized apps now and then. To be honest, also the memory is sufficient for that – there is 4GB installed and 8GB is maximum (1 slot on the mainboard).

There’s a DVD burner, you can install programs from discs if that’s still your thing. Likewise, SD/MMC card slot is included, good for uploading photographs from cameras.

It’s not a wonderful hard drive on Lenovo 80QQ00JGUS, just an unexciting 1TB model with 5400RPM spindle speed. Big it is for sure, but if you wanted the best performance, SSD would be the thing. If you’re technically inclined, you can of course remove the hard drive and put a solid-state drive in place!

Battery life is going to be 4 hours, just the average of these low-end models (4-cell 32Wh battery).

There’s nothing fancy about the display, it’s a 15.6″ screen offering 1366×768 resolution. It is not a touch-supported unit. There is a basic 0.3MP webcam embedded in the top bezel.

Ports are not many, just one USB 3.0, one USB 2.0 and one HDMI (the last can be used for connecting a PC monitor). For networking a 100Mbps RJ-45 port and WiFi card (802.11n standard + Bluetooth 4.0) are offered.

Lenovo 80QQ00JGUS is not much of a gaming computer. It includes a graphics engine which is integrated on the processor, the chip is called Intel HD 5500. With many games you will need to use just little eye candy and FPS won’t still be top-notch. You could expect ca. 25FPS on GTA 5 played on normal settings and resolution 720p. League of Legends is an example that would run better, even if higher settings were used.

No backlit keyboard, but could you really expect one for this price?

Lenovo 80QQ00JGUS is one of those laptops a home user would appreciate, but power user not. It can run a web browser, even YouTube videos without problems, but the general feel is not going to blazing fast. Gaming won’t work unless you’re happy with low settings and resolution. But it’s hard to complain for such a low price; if it’s a basic notebook you’re looking for I think this Lenovo should suffice for you!

Ah, a cheap laptop, a welcome sight! Who wouldn’t like to pay only a little for notebook when the time has come to get one. Lenovo G70-80 80FF00LCUS is this kind of a budget computer, sporting an affordable price tag, but does it also mean it’s too slow for your use…?

Lenovo G70-80 80FF00LCUS contains a pretty good processor with battery like Lenovo 51J0226 Battery, Lenovo 57Y6266 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3448 Battery, Lenovo 45N1070 Battery, Lenovo FRU 42T4585 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3444 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3460 Battery, Lenovo L08L6Y02 Battery, Lenovo 3000 G555 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad B460 Battery, Lenovo 45N1071 Battery, Lenovo X1 Carbon 3462 Battery for the price, the Intel Core i3-5020U of two cores and 2.2GHz clock speed. The more interesting statistics might be CPU Mark score which is 3200. This translates to suitability for all the stuff a home user might do, including web browsers, MS Office programs and video streaming. The 4GB memory suffices for that kind of use as well – just keep in mind you can upgrade to 16GB with two 8GB sticks.

As expected, storage drive isn’t very special, just a regular 1TB spinning disk drive. It’s enough for day-to-day use, but some techies might want to upgrade that to a solid-state drive with better performance. Just keep in mind there are no extra bays inside, so you need to take out the current drive first.

The selection of ports is similar to other cheap laptops. Lenovo G70-80 80FF00LCUS has 1 USB 3.0 and 2 USB 2.0 for common devices such as printers, scanners or extra drives. There are also HDMI and VGA outputs at your disposal, it’s possible to connect another monitor to those.

Networking interfaces are decent, you’ll get Gigabit RJ-45 connector for cable and AC WiFi & Bluetooth 4.0 card for wireless.

The laptop includes a DVD burner and SD/MMC card reader for easy transferring of files to and from the system.

This notebook is only good for older games or those who don’t demand a lot from the system. There is no dedicated graphics included, no Radeon R5, just the integrated Intel HD 5500. It can run many games on low settings if you can do with less than perfect FPS: for example, GTA 5 played on low and 720p resolution will give ca. 25 frames per second. League of Legends and Counter-Strike: Go on the other hand will run smoother with more settings on.

So remember, Lenovo G70-80 80FF00LCUS is a big model, it contains a 17.3 inches display. Resolution isn’t that good, just the basic 1600×900. The screen is not touch sensitive. The webcam on top supports 0.3MP for video, enough for occasional video chatting.

You can expect the 4-cell 41Wh battery to last for the usual four hours (web surfing) before you need to recharge it.

There’s no backlit keyboard on this model.

Operating system is Windows 10 Home, the 64-bit version.

Lenovo G70-80 80FF00LCUS is, first and foremost, a home or office laptop. You can throw basic programs at it and there will be no issues, the Core i3 processor will handle all web browsers and office applications nice. Gaming is however another thing, you won’t get top FPS because of the poor graphics engine. So, if you’re after a large (17.3 inches!) budget laptop and you’re not very demanding, this Lenovo should be a good pick.

One of the more powerful notebooks of Summer 2016 is Lenovo Ideapad 700 (80RU00FEUS). This 15-inches laptop comes with a quad-core Intel processor, ample RAM, a real solid-state drive and batteries like Lenovo 45N1049 Battery, Lenovo L1036F01 Battery, Lenovo L11L6F01 Battery, Lenovo L11L6Y01 Battery, Lenovo L11N6Y01 Battery, Lenovo L11S6F01 Battery, Lenovo L11S6Y01 Battery, Lenovo L11M6Y01 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Y480 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad Y580 Battery, Lenovo IdeaPad G580 Battery, Lenovo ThinkPad Edge E530 Battery. In addition to these puppies, dedicated graphics are included. All this sounds very good, but is there anything bad in this computer at all…?

The processor is Intel Core i5-6300HQ, not an i7 as it might’ve been advertised. The CPU in question is still a very fast chip for laptop, offering you four cores, 2.3Ghz clock speed and 3.2Ghz turbo boost (with the CPU Mark score being a nice ~5800). You will also enjoy the 12GB RAM which, together with the i5 processor, means that lightweight and heavier programs run equally fine on this rig.

The storage solution also earns extra points for Lenovo Ideapad 700 (80RU00FEUS). It’s a 256GB PCI-e solid-state drive which contributes to smooth operations, for example fast (some seconds) boot-up times. As far as I know, there’s also an empty slot for a normal SATA hard drive so you can get more storage by installing HDD.

This Lenovo is not primarily a gamer’s notebook but it surely plays many things you throw at it. GeForce GTX 950M (4GB) does a nice job for casual gamers, for example with GTA 5 you’ll get ~35FPS played on high settings and 720p resolution. Naturally, easier types like sports games or Minecraft will be a piece of cake.

Lenovo Ideapad 700 (80RU00FEUS) includes a typical set of connections. Three USB ports are there (two USB 3.0, one USB 2.0) and HDMI-output for an external monitor. A LAN port (RJ-45) is likewise there and Intel’s dual-band AC WiFi card with Bluetooth 4.0 support for wireless networking.

This model doesn’t have a DVD burner so you’d need an external one to work with discs. Media card reader is available for SD, SDHC, SDXC and MMC formats.

Full HD display, that is a plus. The 15.6″ matte screen gives you a plenty of screen estate. Touch is not supported but who cares with Windows 10. Also IPS is the panel type, that should add to image quality and viewing angle wideness. The webcam on top supports 720p video resolution.

I’m afraid the 3-cell 45Whr battery won’t last very long; 3-4 hours is your best bet when web surfing.

Lenovo Ideapad 700 (80RU00FEUS) is not an expensive laptop when you take a look at what is included. The core components allow power users to run their demanding programs lag-free; and on top of that enough graphics performance is present to keep many games running smooth on medium settings. There’s nothing inherently bad about the laptop and because the price is good as well, I can recommend it for people who want a really fast notebook!

HP offers two batteries with the Mini 5103 including a 28Wh 4-cell and 66Wh 8-cell battery. The 4-cell battery sits completely flush inside the computer, while the larger 8-cell protrudes slightly from the bottom by about ¼-inch. In our battery test with the screen brightness reduced to 70%, wireless active and refreshing a webpage every 60 seconds, and Windows 7 set to the Balanced profile the HP Mini 5103 stayed on for 8 hours and 13 minutes with the 8-cell battery. With the smaller 4-cell battery it stayed on the 3 hours and 25 minutes before going into hibernation.

The HP Mini 5103 offers a lot of features we like; good looks, great build quality, nice screen, good battery life, and high performance. With a starting price of $399 this system isn’t that much more expensive than other consumer netbooks, meaning all those cool features don’t come at a huge premium. HP has a good thing going with the current Mini 5100-series netbook and they understand this since they have kept the same design for three generations now. The brushed metal exterior finish combines good looks with durability and on the inside the rubbery paint gives a unique texture usually reserved for business notebooks. If you are in the market for a new netbook, don’t mind the looks of a business notebook, and want excellent build quality… look no further than the HP Mini 5103.

The 6-cell battery on the HP Mini 1103 provides 55Wh of juice to keep this netbook running throughout your work day. True, models like the ASUS Eee PC 1005PE come with a higher capacity 63Wh battery, but the Mini 1103 is pretty energy efficient. In our testing with the screen brightness reduced to 70%, wireless active and refreshing a webpage every 60 seconds, and Windows 7 on a balanced power profile the Mini 1103 kept running for 8 hours and 23 minutes. That might not be enough for a flight from LAX to Taipei, but it’s enough to get most people through a typical work day without needing a power cord.

The HP Mini 1103 represents the latest evolution of business netbooks from HP. Unfortunately, this netbook is far from being the best choice for mobile professionals on a tight budget.

Yes, the Mini 1103 delivers great battery life and a budget-friendly price tag. Yes, if you just need a basic laptop for staying connected on the road, then this will get the job done. But regardless of these advantages, I can’t get over the fact that you can find much better ultraportable laptops for a modest increase in price.

Considering that HP offers the very impressive (and significantly better) Pavilion dm1z for just $150 more than the price of the Mini 1103, I can’t really come up with a good reason to recommend the Mini 1103 unless you simply cannot afford to spend more than $300.

The HP EliteBook 8540w performed quite well running off its battery, even with its Intel Core i7 processor and NVIDIA Quadro FX 880M graphics. During our battery test with the screen brightness set to 70%, wireless active and refreshing a webpage every 60 seconds, and Windows 7 on the Balanced profile, the system consumed between 15 and 17-watts of power. The total time running off battery was 3 hours and 6 minutes, compared to 5 hours and 5 minutes on the slightly lower configured EliteBook 8540p. While this time isn’t anywhere near the insane 10+ hour mark of newer ultraportable notebooks, it is still plenty of time to get through most meetings or a handful of classes in a given day.

The HP EliteBook 8540w Mobile Workstation had very solid performance in our tests, combined with excellent looks and build quality, topped off with an equally impressive sub-$2,000 price-point. Right now the MSRP of $1,679 is the current going rate with sales few and far between. Compared to the standard EliteBook 8540p with a very similar configuration and performance, it’s roughly $300 and change more. With the recent drop in SSDs and hybrid hard drives we were surprised to see no higher performing drives trickle down into the pre-configured models. A slightly more affordable 8540w is also offered with a Core i5 processor and ATI FirePro M5800 for $1,469 for users on a tighter budget. Overall if you are in the market for a Workstation-class notebook, the HP EliteBook series is highly recommended.

HP Pavilion dm1-4010us Laptop Review

The latest HP Pavilion dm1 (dm1z) makes a good choice for people looking for an affordable, compact laptop with good overall performance.

If you’re trying to find a travel laptop with decent multimedia performance and good battery life that won’t take up much room in a carry-on bag then the latest HP Pavilion dm1 (dm1z) might be just what you need.

The new HP Pavilion dm1-4010us ($480) with battery like HP 751875-001 Battery, HP 751681-421 Battery, HP 751681-231 Battery, HP Pavilion 11-N000SNX Battery, HP Pavilion 11 X360 Battery, HP X360 310 G1 Battery, HP HSTNN-DB7B Battery, HP HSTNN-PB6Q Battery, HP HSTNN-Q97C Battery, HP P3G16AA Battery, HP RI06 Battery, HP ProBook 450 G3 Battery is a simple and straightforward update to the dm1 series laptops from early 2011. You get an 11-inch netbook with a traditional rounded clamshell design. The biggest design change here is that the new generation of dm1z laptops feature mostly black plastics with silver accents rather than mostly silver with black accents.

Build quality is on par with other HP Pavilion notebooks and HP mini netbooks … meaning slightly above average for a budget laptop. The plastics used in the chassis are durable and thick enough to prevent flex or cracking under pressure. The plastic screen lid provides adequate protection for the screen, but the middle of the lid does bend inward under firm pressure (be careful jamming this into overhead compartments on your next flight).

The lid features a plain matte black paint job which keeps the outward appearance clean and professional. Opening up the screen, the silver-painted hinges have enough tension to hold the screen in place, but the plastics surrounding the hinges “float” around the actual metal hinges themselves. This was probably done so that the hinges won’t sustain a sharp impact if the laptop is dropped with the screen in the open position. However, the flexing plastics around the hinges don’t inspire the same confidence in build quality as the rest of the laptop.

The bottom of the notebook has a clean look with no screws in sight. If you want to upgrade the RAM, replace the hard drive or the wireless card, all you have to do is remove the battery and push the battery release switch all the way to the left as you pull forward on the bottom of the notebook. The entire bottom half of the laptop comes off and you have access to two RAM slots, the hard drive, the wireless card and even the fan and heatsink.

Just like the earlier models in the dm1 series, the HP website claims that the new HP Pavilion dm1-4010us delivers “up to 9.5 hours of battery life” from the included 6-cell battery. It’s also worth mentioning that this version of the dm1 uses a slightly higher capacity 55Wh battery compared to the 51Wh battery in the dm1 from earlier this year.

In our tests with the screen brightness set to 70%, wireless active while refreshing a website on regular 60-second intervals, and Windows 7 set to the Balanced profile, the HP Pavilion dm1-4010us continued running for 6 hours and 47 minutes. I have little doubt that you can extend the battery life past the 7-hour mark if you lower the screen brightness and aren’t actively loading pages every 60 seconds. By comparison, much more expensive Ultrabooks like the ASUS Zenbook UX31E and Toshiba Portege Z835 actually deliver less battery life than this little laptop.

If you’re in the market for an 11-inch laptop that can fit on an airline tray table with room to spare, offers good battery life and delivers reasonably impressive performance, then the HP Pavilion dm1-4010us is the notebook for you.

The dual-core E-450 processor and Radeon graphics deliver excellent multimedia performance and modest gaming capabilities in a small package. The lack of USB 3.0 is the only strong negative and although we didn’t see much improvement from Beats Audio in the new dm1z compared to the Altec Lansing speakers in the old dm1z, I’m sure some fans of Dr. Dre will be happy to have it.

There are other notebooks on the market that offer better performance, better battery life, or are even thinner and lighter than the dm1, but you’ll have trouble finding those notebooks on sale for less than the price of the dm1. We found this model of the dm1 selling for as little at $465 and that’s a fair price for a solid ultraportable. Bottom line: HP continues to offer a very attractive netbook in the form of the Pavilion dm1 (dm1z).

Windows 8 has ushered in a slew of new hybrid notebook designs, but HP looks to return to basics with the EliteBook Revolve 810’s classic rotating hinge design. It would be easy to see the business oriented Revolve as a regression, but there’s a certain elegance to its simplicity. With a strong portable design and mSATA SSD, the EliteBook Revolve focuses on providing a solid level of usability in its versatile form factor.

However, with the device costing $1,450 (at the time this review was written) the notebook’s standard resolution display is a tough sell. Is the HP EliteBook’s return-to-basics a step in the right direction? Read the full review to find out.

The HP EliteBook Revolve employs an eye-catching layered design, with its smaller 11.6-inch display dropping off onto the larger bottom portion of the chassis. The magnesium soft-touch finish is comfortable to hold and helps to provide a clean aesthetic. Nothing is really new here; if anything, the device’s twisting display hinge is a regression in favor of a more traditional convertible notebook design. However, that doesn’t stop this notebook from feeling fresh. Where many ultrabooks opt for smooth curves the EliteBook Revolve embraces a squared angular design and stands out because of it.

To test battery life, we used our new PowerMark benchmark in balanced mode. The test consists of a combination of automated web browsing, word processing, gaming and video playback workloads. The test is far more strenuous than our previous test, measuring the machine under a litany of scenarios to better simulate real life use. With the test being far more demanding the scores are understandably lower than our previous benchmark.

In our test, the HP EliteBook Revolve 810 ran for 2 hours and 54 minutes before shutting down after reaching the 5 percent battery reserve limit. Running just shy of 3 hours the EliteBook Revolve offers sub-par battery life for a portable convertible notebook. The device did however score far better in our productivity test running for 5 hours and 21 minutes before shutting down. The discrepancy between the two scores likely is a result of the machine offloading a portion of the graphic workload to the CPU. This means that business users whose workload consists mostly of office and web functions can expect far longer battery life. Just don’t start viewing media and expect the notebook charge to last all day.

Equipped with a 1.9 GHz Intel Core i5-3437U processor, 4GB of RAM, and a 128GB mSATA SSD the HP EliteBook Revolve 810 offers a strong level of performance for a convertible notebook on par with most business notebooks.

Basic world processing and web functions prove to be no challenge for the device, as it’s able to juggle multiple tasks with no drop in responsiveness or functionality. The device is also able to take on more strenuous business functions such as Microsoft Office Excel with no drop in performance.

The major limiting factor for this notebook is its Integrated HD graphics. The machine will struggle with graphically intensive functions (HD video editing, high-end gaming) as a result, but that’s certainly not the focus of this business oriented device.

Data retrieval is relatively fast thanks to the machine’s mSATA SSD. Applications load fast and it only takes a few seconds to resume from sleep mode. Boot up speeds proved to be a bit slower, taking around 16 seconds for the machine to go from its shutdown state to the Windows 8 screen.

Starting at an affordable $400, the Touchsmart 11z provides a compelling offer with its attractive sturdy design and 10-point-touch enabled display.

However, as with most budget devices there is a concession to be made. Equipped with a dual-core 1GHz processor, 4GB of RAM and a 500GB HDD the HP Pavilion Touchsmart 11z finds itself lacking in the performance department. The HP Pavilion Touchsmart 11 features a silver plastic lid complete with a chrome HP logo positioned in the center. The glossy reflective finish is resistant to fingerprint smudges and provides an appealing sheen when it catches the light. A protective rubber strips outlines the outer-edges of the black glossy plastic display face. The deck is outfitted with a black brushed metal surface that feels cool to the touch, but unfortunately also proves far less resistant to smudges than the device’s outer protective shell. The bottom half of the chassis is outlined with a silver plastic strip running along the edges and thick a protective black plastic cover on the bottom of the notebook.

In our tests, the HP Pavilion Touchsmart 11z ran for 5 hours and 47 minutes with the display set to 110 nits before shutting down. Running a bit short of six hours the Touchsmart 11z offers strong battery life, especially given the machine’s price point. With our test being more strenuous than real life conditions, users can expect to get upwards of 7 hours of continuous use on a single charge. The battery life also holds up well when viewing video as well, as the Touchsmart ran for 4 hours and 8 minutes in Entertainment mode. Basically no matter what task users run, the HP Pavilion will offer long lasting battery life.

The HP Pavilion Touchsmart 11z-e000 is ideal for users who want a touch-enabled display, but don’t want to spend a lot of money. The only other comparable option at the sub $500 price point is the Asus Q200. The two devices match-up fairly evenly — with a slight performance edge going to the Q200 — but the Pavilion Touchsmart 11z’s base model is listed at nearly $100 less.

While the Touchsmart 11z may be arguably the best affordable touch-display option, users who don’t see touch-controls as a priority may want to look elsewhere. Consumers looking for a machine to handle basic functions with solid portability may want to consider a Chromebook instead. The Acer C7 Chromebook offers comparable performance and is even lighter than the Touchsmart 11z at $300 cheaper. Of course the kicker with a Chromebook is that users will have to run Google’s Chrome OS as opposed to Microsoft’s Windows. Users simply looking for the best performance to price ratio also may want to take a look at the Lenovo G580. The 15.6″ notebook does not offer the same portability as the Touchsmart 11z, but its 2.5 GHz processor offers a considerable performance increase at an even lower price point (currently listed on Amazon for $370).

In any case, the HP Pavilion Touchsmart 11z remains one of the best options for users looking to run Windows 8 with a touch-display at a wallet-friendly price.
