mech pilot trainee who just flunked out of the program. she wasn’t supposed to be anything but a weapon and she couldn’t even do that right.

she doesn’t have anything. no house, no job, no car, no free will, no legal protections. her entire life down to the level of her brain has been organized around piloting a mech for years and now she doesn’t get to do that. she doesn’t know who she is and she doesn’t even know how to turn back on the higher level brain function that would let her try to answer that question.

she’s basically an empty shell that had a human being in it once. she eats and sleeps and uses the bathroom like a person, but her eyes are completely dead. now she just sits places, silently and unmoving, for hours at a time, waiting for orders she’ll never receive…

at the fishing tournament yesterday btw there were age categories bc it was all-inclusive and we didn't want like 60 year old anglers competing against 4 years olds obviously.

so anyway this 14 year old boy entered in the 11-15 age bracket and he saw a huge fish in the water he became absolutely determined to catch. i don't think he even wanted to win anymore. he just wanted that fish specifically. but his line wasn't strong enough for such a big fish and didn't have the ideal bait.

enter: two 15 year old boys who didn't know him. they saw what he was trying to do, and they were clearly experienced anglers, and they got involved in the chase. they got the right bait and the three of them spent hours with their lines in the water, until the first boy finally hooked the fish. they talked him through the slow challenge of endurance. he couldn't reel in all at once because the fish was too heavy for his line and it'd break.

he finally reeled it in, but they didn't have a net. it took all three of them, lying on their bellies, six hands on the fish, to pull it out of the water. they put it in a big bucket of water for the weigh-in (we just subtracted the bucket+water weight after), gave their new friend careful instruction on how to handle the fish so he could pose for a hasty photo without injuring its spine, and then carefully placed the fish back in the water.

in the end, he won first place in his age bracket. one of the other boys who helped him tied for second with a 12-year-old competitor, and he gave her the trophy.

then during the drawing, where participants won prizes randomly if I pulled their name from a box, I happened to pull his name and he got a great prize so it all came around.

Idk. the teamwork. the serendipity of friendship. the graciousness. the consideration for the fish. Just some things that made me happy.

Love how tumblr has its own folk stories. Yeah the God of Arepo we’ve all heard the story and we all still cry about it. Yeah that one about the woman locked up for centuries finally getting free. That one about the witch who would marry anyone who could get her house key from her cat and it’s revealed she IS the cat after the narrator befriends the cat.

To those who think they are “getting old” or “falling behind” on their 30th birthday...

I didn't get married until I was in my mid thirties

I didn't have a child/start a family until I was 40

I didn't find my longest work experience until I was 40

I didn't find kink until I was in my early 40s

I didn't meet my life partner until I was 47

I didn't understand my trauma enough to do anything about it until I was in my 50s

I decided to give polyamory a go at 54

I didn't get in the best physical shape of my life until I was 55

A lot of you want to come to understand yourselves, evolve to your full potential, and solve all of hardest evolutionary points of your lives just a dozen years after you become an adult. You have 12 years living as an adult before you are 30 years old. You will have 60 or 70 adult years if you live a full and healthy life. There is no time table. You are not running behind.

okay, but can we talk about mech vs mech hacking warfare?

You’re literally reaching into their mechs computer. You know, the thing that’s connected directly to their brain? I’m just saying there’s a lot of potential there that I haven’t really seen.

You know those reward chemicals? The ones that the pilots are pumped full of every time they kill something? You have access to that system. Hell, you have access to all the systems like that. Reward chems? Combat stims? Painkillers? That stuff they put in the mech just in case the pilot starts acting strange and command needs to shut off its brain and let the orders do the work? All you have to do is open a link and you can stretch your hand across the battlefield through the system and squeeze the IV bag. Better yet, you can choose not to. For example, you could start feeding them a baseline dose of synthetic oxytocin and then abruptly cut them off whenever they aim their gun at you.

And then start it back up when they aim it at their former allies

Then there’s the brain-computer interface itself. Blackbox data? That collection of everything the pilot thinks or feels since it got in the mech? Yours. You can know them better than they know themselves, and you can open up a comma channel to tell them just what’s hidden in their subconscious. You can tell them what they’re afraid of. What they want. Why they’re doing this, even if they don’t know why themselves. It was quite an oversight, their organization deciding to keep an open link from their mechs to command in order to monitor pilot status, because now you have their records from back at base too.

The only setting I’ve seen with a lot of mech hacking is lancer. Imagine what would happen if you put it in a setting like armored core or whatever unofficial setting we tumblr mechposters have.
