I love having friends who reject diet culture. I love going out when everyone buys food and drinks that they enjoy. I love people who will pipe up and suggest we stop for a snack or grab a meal. I love ordering what I want and no one making comments other than how good it looks (and maybe asking to steal a bite off my plate). I love revelling in how full we are after a good meal and taking a break to appreciate how fortunate we are. I love sharing snack from our bags with one another. I love enjoying the pleasure of food and drinks and good company.

When I was early on in my transition I got in a Lyft, and the driver was this big country guy. I was a little nervous so I just sat quietly in the back.
After a moment he changed the music on his phone to what sounded like a Hatsune Miku song. Curiosity got the better of me, so I finally spoke up and said “is this Hatsune Miku?”
And he said “Yep. You looked uncomfortable, and I know Transgender women like Hatsune Miku, so I thought it might help.”
I think about that interaction a lot.
#firstly this post was lovely#secondly I had to take a lot of Ubers during my month in Costa Rica this summer#(it's illegal there for tax reasons but it's what EVERYONE uses to get around because the taxi drivers are known for being unsavory)#but I definitely experienced the 'driver puts on his White Girl 20Something music when I get in' phenomenon#but usually only when I was with friends. I like to think my individual energy is just very I disruptive#and that's why several drivers when I was alone just Did Not speak to me and kept listening to what they had on the radio earlier#and in one notable case this was a man listening to talk radio about the massive success of a women's soccer team#ALSO interspersed with his GPS giving directions in what I can only describe as a Spanish Darth Vader voice#didn't look at me once. 5 stars.#also 5 stars was the man I chatted with for 20 straight minutes because I asked him how long he'd been an Uber driver#and he responded and told me his entire life story including his time being unhoused and alcohol dependent. and every other phrase was#interspersed with 'gracias a Dios' because EVERYTHING in CR is 'gracias a Dios'#I worked in a govt PCP clinic for two weeks and every patient who came in for lab results the doctor would say some version of#'youre not anemic thanks be to god' and 'no evidence of UTI thank the good Lord's#it was an interesting little bit of culture shock 😂 that and the abundant Mormons#which was like seeing your least favorite teacher at the grocery store as a kid. the evil ESCAPES it's natural environment??? (usa)
