Ao3 does not need automatic censorship, it is an archive, therefore anything can be posted

Writing or reading about something illegal does not mean the author nor the reader condones it, if that were true, you could never read a story involving anything negative

So, the other day, when I was discussing AO3's policy on solicitation, a tumblr user came at me saying that AO3's "no monetization/solicitation" rules were "bullshit" because nexus mods allows fan created mods to get paid.

AO3 protects you and your works. 

It protects your works from copyright strikes and DCMA takedowns.

It protects your work from advertisers.

It protects your work from overzealous legal challenges.

It protects your right to post adult content.

AO3 is non-profit and AO3 will never try to use you or your work to make a profit for themselves and AO3 will go to bat for you if someone tries to legally challenge you or your works.

a feel like the new generation of fanfic readers NEED to understand that clicking on a fic (interaction) does nothing. ao3 has no algorithm. your private discord discussions of fic do not reach the authors. if you do not actively engage with writers they will stop posting. this isn’t social media this is community.

Fandom Etiquette 101/How to fandom for dummies

The Nevermoor fandom survey from 2024-2025 [link] featured more than a few people wishing that the fandom in general was more active. Change starts with you.

Dos

Reblog posts you like! It's a great way to share posts around the fandom and it's more interactive than just liking or lurking. Leave tags on those reblogs, if you thought a piece of fanart was beautiful, tell the artist. They might have spent hours or days on that, and would most likely appreciate it.

Leave comments and kudos on fanfiction. Even if that comment is just "extra kudos" or "i liked this" or "i'm rereading this and really liking it" [link to a post about how to write ao3 comments]. It's a good way to continue to motivate the hard working writers of this fandom and encourage them to keep at it.

Add image descriptions to any images you post, or transcribe videos, no matter how small or trivial. It's a good way of keeping this fandom accessible, particularly to people who use screen readers [guide to image descriptions]

Write your own fic! Draw your own art! Post that headcanon! Make your own rec lists of your favourite fanfiction and reblog those of other people! Talk about a moment you loved or thought was funny or think might be foreshadowing! Post that theory, no matter how ridiculous! Examine why that thing was just so interesting. Get weird with it! Have fun

Don'ts

Tell authors to update their fic. It's rude. Don't do that.

Offer unsolicited criticism. If someone asks for critical criticism - that is, criticism that is aimed to help them improve - offer it, if you want, but otherwise keep it to yourself.

Engage in bad-faith arguments, or ship wars. It's not nice. If you don't like looking at it, block the user and move on.

Fanfiction is so silly. I am playing with my dolls and people are coming over to watch. Some of them even clap and give me compliments. And when I'm done playing, I can go and watch other people play with their dolls.

You know something I’ve figured out in the past few months as someone who 1. Doesn’t have a lot of friends and 2. Actually finds it very hard to make friends is that the fastest quickest route to befriending people is to engage with them like they’re already your friends

What do I mean by that? I mean, show up places and do things and talk to people. I joined the amateur theatre group in my city and a creative collective and I forced myself to go to meetups when I was tired and nervous about it but even moreso— I met a couple very cool people while working on a theatre project and I forced myself to ask for their numbers

And then I forced myself to text them! It felt so cringy and lame but that was just a fucking lie in my brain! I invited them to see movies and I sent them book & video game & movie recommendations and you know what? They appreciated that! They texted me back! I sent messages like “hey! How’s school?” Or “do you have any advice on grant applications?” And “you wanna get a beer sometime this week?” And every single time it felt like I was flinging myself off a big dark precipice into nothing and every single time I got a friendly response back

So like, the cringe is fucking fake, if you want people want to be your friend sometimes you literally just have to decide that they’re your friends and talk to them as such

a writing competition i was going to participate in again this year has announced that they now allow AI generated content to be submitted

their reasoning being that "we couldn't ban it even if we wanted to, every writer already uses it anyway"
