I am still on CATS Pacific Rim AU crack.

SO. Misto and Tugger end up Drift Compatible, which confuses absolutely everyone. Tugger is of course way more extroverted than Misto, is always the one responding on comms, etc, so everyone else starts making this bad assumption that the reason Misto and Tugger work is because Misto essentially is submissive and lets Tugger completely take over. Munk and Bomba have both drifted with Tugger before, and the fight for dominance was an issue with both of them.

Thing is, that couldn’t be further from the truth. Misto respects Tugger’s experience and ideas, so Tugger doesn’t feel the urge to fight for control. In addition, Misto is actually the one responsible for a lot of what starts to get considered their “recklessness”- simply because Misto knows both his own body limitations (being a dancer) and that of the Jaeger’s (being an engineer), and is willing to push it to the limits. And Tugger’s the only one who won’t baulk or doubt him when Misto does something like that.

So when a Kaiju comes leaping at them and Misto does what is essentially a death drop with a full on Jaeger— one of these numbers:

Tugger definitely screams a little but doesn’t try and take the reins. He just makes sure they have a blade up to slice the thing in two from the ground.

When they get back to base, there’s definitely 50:50 ‘that was cool’ versus ‘that was reckless’. Jelly has the reckless point of view, and scolds Tugger for it — assuming he was the one to initiate it. Tugger doesn’t deny this assumption, as he’s not been denying any of them, because, as he tells Misto, he’s used to getting yelled at. Let them chew him out instead of Misto. (Misto is grateful for this, because he’s afraid Jelly might stop letting him pilot if she finds out.)

Someone- Bomba or Munk - Let’s say Bomba - follows Tugger after this and corners him, telling him he needs to knock it off. He can’t keep risking the Jaeger and Misto like this, and the fact he’s overwhelming Misto isn’t right. And plays a recording of the little scream that happened as the two of them dropped, like “look you scared Misto”.

And Tugger just takes a deep breath and grits his teeth for a second, before telling her to play the recording again and listen closer this time. Now do it again. She does, frowning to herself as she realizes the scream doesn’t sound like Misto.

“No, it doesn’t, because that was me trying not to pee myself,” Tugger says, glaring. “Because that was Misto, and by the way, it was a brilliant move. Instead of a kaiju to the chest and who knows how much damage, we got a bit of scraped paint and a ding or two from hitting the ground.”

Bomba pauses, trying to process this. “That was Misto?”

“Yes, it was! That crazy jump two weeks ago? Misto. That spinning on one leg thing when our knee got taken out? Misto. The time we lifted that Kaiju? Misto.” Bomba just stares at him while Tugger lists off a ton of crazy moves Tugger has gotten blamed/praised for.

“But Jellyorum always yells at you for them,” she says.

“Of course she does! You all never believed me when I tried to tell you how much of it was him! Because you’ve all got this completely stupid idea that he’s weak and helpless and I’m just stomping all over him when he’s got more spunk and bravery than all of you put together!” By this point Tugger is downright snarling, more visibly angry than he has been for a long time.

“And I am not going to let a single one of you tear him down and make him feel like shit for being one of the best Jaeger pilots that has ever lived! He is brilliant and until the lot of you can stop being blind enough to see that? I’ll be the one standing between him and your rotten attitudes, every time.”

Bomba just stands there, speechless, as Tugger storms away. 

(Tugger is a very protective boyfriend hype man drift partner.)

Big news, I’m opening a store!

I’ve got these fellas available as stickers and other things! I'm starting with this art piece, and plan on adding more over time (Especially now that I know what dimensions Threadless is looking for, lol), so give me a follow if so inclined!

Below cut is my abandoned attempt at this piece in 2022! I’ve grown a lot!

This has actually been a concept that I’ve had for years! I didn’t really get into digital art until joining the CATS fandom, and I struggled a lot with digital rendering. I had started this concept based on my shrinky dink designs, but gave up because I was so unhappy with how it was turning out. I luckily kept it, and it’s been really gratifying to see how much I’ve learned in just two years alone. I look forward to learning and growing even more!

“Oh really?”

“Really. You’re quite average.”

“You still get flustered when I smile.”

“How dare you slander me in such a way.”

Tugger snorted. “If you say so, Firecracker.” As he lifted the mug to his lips, he flashed Misto his smile over the rim, the perfect mix of charming and mischievous, complete with a rakish wink. As if on queue, Misto blushed, a flurry of pink sparks puffing from hair and clothes.

He realized he had been played and huffed, rolling his eyes. “Terrible bore,” he muttered, unable to hide his smile.

“Obviously. But I’m Your terrible bore, right?”

Misto smiled, reaching out with his free hand to take Tugger’s. “Obviously.”
