In response to this post I made about Joe smiling in response to Ming quietly calling him "Phi," @the-wayside pointed out that Ming continues to call Joe "Phi" after they collapse onto the bed.

It was a little difficult to hear under the music so I decided to lean into the hyper-fixation I'm currently experiencing with this scene and enhance the sound.

I think part of the beauty of this episode is that Dee had been building up his first kiss into this huge thing for him and all about love and of this huge importance but the he went and he kissed Yak and it didn't solve anything. It didn't magically make them better or happier or fix their relationship or anything. It was a kiss, a good kiss, it was long overdue and it did nothing for them.

Dee is clinging to romantic ideals, to the idea of romance, rather then the actual act of it. He wants this to be like he always dreamed, to be simple and straight forward, to not need anything but a kiss and a confession.

But love is not that simple. Not real love. Because real love is real people and real complexities and real pain.

That's why it works. Because Yak lost the fight and now Dee gave him his first kiss but in the end it won't solve or change anything because it doesn't matter, not really, not if Dee doesn't back it up with words and actions.

Dee had built up so much for this kiss and so hard the audience through both of them and their desire but in the end a kiss is just a kiss. It can be an expression of emotion and love but it's also just a kiss.

And a kiss doesn't solve anything.

I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned “forever” into the only acceptable definition of success.

Like… if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it’s a “failed” business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don’t actually want to keep doing that, you’re a “failed” writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it’s a “failed” marriage.

The only acceptable “win condition” is “you keep doing that thing forever”. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a “real” friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a “phase” - or, alternatively, a “pity” that you don’t do that thing any more. A fandom is “dying” because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.

I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it’s okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success… I don’t think that’s doing us any good at all.

Wandee Goodday - Episode 5

Once again, Wandee Goodday continues to knock it out of the park. This show is just getting it right and I really hope that they can keep this going all the way to the end.

Dee and Yak are both falling for each other. We can see it happening through their looks, words and actions. We can also see them realising it too which is a refreshing change from the norm where the audience knows well before the character does.

What’s even better though is the realism of them still having feelings for the person they liked before. Yak likes Dee but he’s still attracted to Taem. Dee likes Yak but there’s still feelings for Dr Ter (which looks like it will be a feature of the next episode). Both have liked these people for a long time and those feelings don’t just go away because you meet someone new or, in Dee’s case, they turn out to be a gaslighting jackass! Yes, Dee has managed to resist the lure of Dr Ter’s requests but there’s still hints that his feelings are there and he’s repressing them.

For both Yak and Dee’s relationship, Yak has to see through his feelings for Taem. He has to pursue her and see what he has with her in comparison to what he has with Dee. He needs to realise that to be with Taem means changing himself slightly - we’ve already seen this with the clothes - whereas with Dee, he is just being himself. Dee likes Yak as is and that’s the key for who Yak really should be with in the end.

As for Dee, I think he also needs to have that moment of weakness, where he can’t resist Dr Ter, so he can realise that Dr Ter can’t provide him with the loving relationship that Yak gives him. We didn’t get much of what Dee and Dr Ter’s relationship was like prior to the disastrous date but it seemed remarkably one sided, with Dee putting in more effort than Dr Ter did. With Yak, there’s a nice balance between the two of them and both being willing to help the other out, even if it is at their own expense, and there’s an openness with showing who they are/who they love without any shame to have others see it.

Yak and Dee need to see the other side so they can miss what they already have with each other. They’ve built a relationship based on a solid friendship, with great communication, sexual attraction and now the romantic attraction is building. Once they realise what they could have with Taem/Dr Ter, it’s going to help them realise that what they actually need was the fake relationship that changed to a proper relationship without either of them realising it at the time. Done right, this will be the good kind of drama for their storyline.

How amazing is Dee’s grandma? She accepts him for him, even if it did mean finding a semi-naked guy in bunny ears in his apartment! She also didn’t question him on his choice of relationship when Dee was telling her about the real situation with him and Yak, and how he can’t fall for him as it’s only a short-term deal but seeing them together on the couch, she will have known there’s more to it, however, she’s willing to let him figure it out himself. Dee is lucky to have her, and Kao, as a support network.

Kao might not be featured much but he continues to be an amazing character. I loved his pure joy at getting such high ratings for his new business/therapy venture. I’m hoping we can get even more to his character fleshed out with a love interest because I would hate it if GMMTV went with the openly asexual character only for it to be a token gesture. They need to run with it and let this be more of a featured storyline, and not just with people not understanding what he’s looking for and not pursuing any further relationship - give Kao someone who understands and still wants to be with him!

We got a bit more of Yei and Cher this week but their storyline felt like something was missing. A lot of what we’ve seen with Yei and Cher is Yei being clingy or trying to instigate something physical with Cher, with Cher being a bit resistant (although I’ve always put this down to location rather than lack of interest). This week, however, Cher is questioning Yei’s interest because he hasn’t been touching him and wondering if he’s seeing someone else. We needed an episode that showed this, with Yei being a bit more distant rather than the short, seconds long clip of them in bed together with Yei turning away from Cher, to have this truly make an impact. Without that, it really just seemed like unnecessary drama thrown in to make things interesting for their pairing. A giant fail for me - the first and hopefully only fail that this show will deliver.

This Is A Gay Asian Rant About BL Comments Made By Some Queer Westerners I See Sometimes.

So you know of those gays (usually white) that made dumb tiktok dancing to list of countries that legalized same sex marriage and list of countries that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ poeple as a way to say something racist. yeah i kinda got the same vibes from some comments regard how asian BL is homophobic just cause they don't live up to queer western standard. look, i'm not saying that some BLs and their creators don't deserve criticism regard how they capitalized/exploited queerness for an easy cash grab.

But people need to understand that Asian countries despite recent progress are still very much culturally conservatives. so when people says that thai bl is homophobic and all the characters looks like bunch of straight guys, which is true for some olders thai BLs i'm not gonna denied that. but after all this time and newer BLs generally being very queer and most of creators being out queer themself and poeple still making these comments, i'm annoyed.

And don't get me start on the actors. you don't know them! why are you making assumption and calling them queerbaiter just cause they acts in bl. like maybe they're straight, maybe they're not but what they're definitely doing is making queer content for you know, queer people here. so when you made halfass comments about their sexuality what do you think that made other queer people who still in the closet feels. and when you add the nationality to that, "these thai bl pair are this and that, this korean actor is so ungrateful for his bl past", etc. when our societies are still very much still in progress regard LGBTQIA+ acceptance. it make us living here feels fucking awful like somehow we're lesser queer than people in the west just cause we don't have citibank at pride or some shit.

And the shittiest in my humbled opinion are comments regard censored chinese bls. people do know like, that the creators making these bls are risking their livelihoods for this. that these shows getting make at all are miracles. yes it sucked that they're censored but they're still very much queer shows making by queer people who want to express thier queerness despite the chinese government being the chinese government. when people dimissing these shows as not belonging in queer media, you're also dimissing their creators and audiences as not belonging in the community.

Look what i want to say is that we're trying our best over here, and maybe our best are not up to your liking. the ways we talk and express our queerness maybe still can be perceived as problematic by western queer standard. but these media are our house and you're the guests. for people aren't shitty we appreciated that you're here engaging and loving our media, this is your home too and you're welcome in it. i can speak for myself that i very much love being here on tumblr and interacting with people from all over the world who love BL. but for people who are being shitty sometimes about asian bl.

Ongoing Series - Thai

Deep Night (Thurs iQiyi) ep 7 of 8 - Love that they’re addressing being outed (not as gay but) as sex workers. Interesting twist, more classism than homophobia. The sides are FUCKING ADORABLE. Also we asked for a 3some and they sure as shit gave us one, dream sequence or not. Plus baby likes the idea. Everyone say "thank you Thailand." Bonus more lesbians and a lovely mother-son core relationship. I’m feeling spoiled by this show. 

Two Worlds (Thurs IQIYI) ep 6 of 10 - Love that we got the 2nd world romance at laso. I do like how well MaxNat do tenderness. I would call it their forte. Also if you love that picture perfect yaoi size-difference, its this pair more than most others. Max TOWERS over Nat and he's about 2x his weight.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 12fin - It’s cute. They're cute. It was a lovely ending. 

Summation:

A solid little pulp about a closeted actor who falls for his nerdy next door neighbor and has to come out. Makes up for in earnestness and good will what it lacks in acting ability and chemistry. 7/10 

To Be Continued (Sat C3 Thailand grey) - I kind of love that the break up was miscommunication but all around a shitty first time, so common to many of us. And being too young to talk properly, or know what they wanted and needed from each other, for each other, or with each other.

“ I was a coward back then.” “ Are you brave now?”

Sure it was miscommunication but at least they were honest about it.

Achi was genuinely an asshole and I understand Ji's extreme bitterness now - his heart was broken because the friendship fractured and he was abandoned. Then the good kind of time lapse. All in all I quite enjoyed the last few episodes of the show. Mostly because it was better than The Promise. Which doesn’t take much. Still, by comparison I can only give it a relatively good grade (for a not re-watchable difficult to find pulp).

Summation:

A bittersweet reunion romance about a doctor and the superstar who abandoned him in high school, their reconciliation, and the enduring pain of first love. Including the, erm, actual pain of a first time. The honesty of the miscommunication in this pulp and the intimacy scenes elevates it, but not much more than that. 7/10

1000 Years Old (Thurs iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 -  They are too cute, with their little promised to die together. I’m still finding the majority of the show very boring, but I can’t discount the sweetness of the couple. Demanding vampire boyfriend is demanding.

Close Friend Season 3: Soju Bomb! (Weds iQIYI) - Finished and rumor is, it never improved and wasn't really BL.

Unknown (Taiwan Tues YouTube & Viki) ep 9 of 12 - I do love this show. How is it, in one episode, more gangster than all of KP or Kiseki? It was always gonna take A LOT for Q to come round but I do hope they resolve it soon. I'd like to see them actually happy for a bit.

Gray Shelter (Korea Thurs iQIYI) ep 3-4 of 5 - they act about 1000 times more like exes than they do like brothers, just saying. I get what’s happening, they’re each dodging around admitting that they like the other person and trying to force the other one to admit it first. So they push up to the line of threatening to leave but neither one can ever actually cross it because they don’t actually want to be apart ever again. It’s kind of fun to watch actually. All angsty bullshit, but hey, repressed boys be repressed.

Living With Him AKA Kare no Iru Seikatsu (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 2 of 10 - Awe K wants to be N’s bf so bad. All the hints are being dropped. But this is Japan, baby boy is NEVER going to get it without being kissed and sometimes not even then. I mean the Weatherman fucked his boy for years and it still didn’t, erm, sink in. Meanwhile, the classic Japanese version of a bespectacled wingman has entered stage right (never lose your childish wonder, Japan). It’s great, I utterly adore it. 

Blue Boys (Korea ? YouTube) 1 of ? No MDL link - on Sukfilm’s YT channel (along with a cute little GL) interesting short series that just happened out of the, erm, blue. Reunion of old classmates reveals that both are struggling with life, but back then the popular jock had a big ol' crush on the nerd. They go drinking and end up in bed - as ya do. This is Korea, so chaste kisses, but still GOOD START. (The GL is adorable too)

At 25:00 in Alaska AKA 25 Ji Akasaka de (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 1 of 10 - Hum. It felt like I'd seen this all before and then Japan dick slaps me with a sex club. Say it with me everybody, "must you Japan?" Let's see how they do but I'm not impressed so far.

Love is like a Cat (Korea Mon Viki) eps 5-6 of 12 - Speaking of unimpressed. Geonu is definitely the best thing about this show. Which is saying something as he’s the idol AND such a minor character. NO SINGING. (Except Geonu, he can sing.)

4/26 My Stand-In (Thai Fri iQIYI) ep 1 of 12 eps - adaptation of Chinese novel "Professional Body Double" by Shui Qiang Cheng. Stars Up (Lovely Writer) and Poom (Bake Me Please) directed by the same team as KP (not a recommendation IMHO - my biggest criticism of that show was the clashing directing styles). This one looks complicated, lemme try: Joe is a stuntman for famous actor Tong. Joe falls in love with Ming but Ming sees Joe as nothing more than a Tong-replacement. After learning this horrible truth, Joe dies. Joe then wakes up in the body of another man also named Joe. He manages to rebuild the same life as before—with the same people eventually re-meeting Ming. Ming wants Joe back but Joe doesn't understand why. But Ming seems to know what's going on and wants to give him some kind of explanation.

I'm exhausted just trying to describe the plot.

I have a few people tag me @firstkanaphans @negrowhat in this and when I originally did it I only put Phaya from the sign but I started thinking and I said yeah I got more so here are the others.

Idk if it’s the way that Billy plays this character or what but Phaya has my heart. He’s just so annoyingly cute and playful but so smart and curious and he does not like to be ignored and so passionate, it’s endearing really idk.

2. Mork from Last Twilight

This man is so warm and kind and loving and caring and loyal and and and I could go on and and on I love him so much. Like that man went to jail because his friend decided to put his woodpecker into another birds tree and he fought for his ex girlfriend trust. I’m sorry that man is so fucking warm.

3. King from Bed Friend

I love this man and his big brown cow eyes so much. He’s just a walking green flag and he so sexy. He is just thoughtful, caring, loving, warm. I want him on every level. Love him

4. Akk from Enchantè

He a little slow on the uptake but that man is so romantic and kind. And truly was a green flag. And truly just wanted the best for Theo even if he had to put himself on the back burner.

5. Jeng from Step by Step

JENG WAS A MAN (no pun intended) That man was a CEO of his own business while trying to manage another business that he hated. He was self sacrificing and so kind. I love that tired his best to change when it came to Pat. He made some questionable decisions but I believe he did that because he thought that was best for him. He was loving and caring a I count him as a green flag.

6. Mark from Love Mechanics

That man went through so much for love. But I love how he was true to himself. I love how self aware he was and I love how he stood up for himself. Mark knew who he was and also knew what he wanted but he also knew that he was fucked when it came to Vee. I would have treated him right.

7. Ayan from The Eclipse

That man was a menace. But I love how fiercely loyal he was. I love how kind and thoughtful and loving this man was. He just wanted Justice ( and for the school to burn to ashes and for ashes to go the dumpster never to be seen again) for his uncle, he was a heartbroken boy who has lost his one close person in his life and was spinning around lost like a broken compass but he found his north in Akk and I love that for him.

8. Phayu from Love in the Air

Is this really a surprise to anybody. I mean come on now. That man knew how to stand on business. He knew what he wanted and made sure he got it. Made sure the person he wanted was also on their business. He wanted them to be successful together and love a man that is ambitious. Very loyal and protective but was also completely a simp.

9. Boeing from Only Friends

This man was wicked for no other reason then the fact that he could be. I was fascinated. Came to ruin lives and almost succeeded to if it hadn’t been for RayMew and them being like ahh back the fuck up off my man. I still think RaySandBoeing threesome should have happen. I would have like to see Boeing and Top kiss but also BoeingTopBoston would have been interesting to see. And I think Boston would have loved it there to be honest but we talking about Boeing here. Anyway that man should have had more screen time so he could fuck up more people lives.

10. Kinn from KinnPorsche

Listen Linda, that man was most definitely not a green flag and a very dark pink flag but I don’t think he was a red flag. He was just dumb. He’s complicated. But he was kind and thoughtful in his own way. And he tired to be fair to people. But Porsche was on that man mind 25/8 and it’s hard to think when someone is occupying your mind like that. But is he very loyal to a man that did not deserve it. He was caring for his people and was a big simp and I love that for him.

Every year the standard of B.Ls gets better and better and it looks like 2024 could be the best year yet! There are so many dramas coming that sound so unique and I can’t wait to see them! Everyday it seems another one is announced. But currently these are what I’m most excited for:

10. Spare Me Your Mercy (TH)

late 2024

A Doctor and Police Major grow close after a series of suspicious de*ths, but is the Doctor the culprit? I’m so happy that popular insanely talented actors like Tor are leading BLs now! I’ve been a fan of his lakorns for years! It’s from the director of Laws of Attraction/To Sir With Love which I loved, but I feel that lack of budget prevents his dramas from being incredible.

9. Unknown the Series (TW)

24 February 2024

An orphan at 13 finds a lost boy as they grow older one admits he has romantic feelings for the other. This is the 1st Chinese danmei adaptation that Taiwan is producing! It sounds so messy and dark! People have compared the story to the second couple in Kiseki (ah)! And it’s by Priest the legendary danmei author responsible for Word of Honor and many others! I’m so excited!

8. Jack and Joker (TH)

Mid - late 2024

A con-man and a debt collector are bound by their past leading to a partnership and romance. One of my favourite Thai pairings is getting another series!!! YinWar have both proven to be fantastic actors with the best chemistry and I’m so happy they’ve been given a darker more grown up setting. Half this series directors work is bad but the other half is incredible- I really hope this will be incredible (like IFYLITA)!

7. Perfect Propose (JP)

2nd February 2024

Am an overly stressed office-worker meets a man claiming they promised to marry each other and insists he is his fiancé. The synopsis is weird but chemistry is so beautiful! And it’s from the director of Kieta Hatsukoi and the screenwriter of Old Fashioned Cupcake - an incredible team up! There’s no way this won’t be amazing!

6. Ossans Love TH (TH)

late 2024

A young man finds out his much older married boss and one of his co-workers are in love with him, a love triangle ensues! EarthMix are another of my favourite Thai pairings but I wasn’t a huge fan of the other iterations of this story. But I’ve missed EarthMix so much and it’s from the MY School President director, so I’m still so excited!

5. Heesu in Class 2 (KR)

2024 (I hope)

A rumour goes round the school that Heesu can solve your love problems, but he can’t even admit his crush on his best friend. This was filmed in 2022!!! It is based on the most beloved and cutest manhwa ever. The cast is full of up and coming actors! BUT we have no idea who made it or where is is!? The lead recently did an interview where he mentioned the project - I’m hoping 2024 is the year! PLEASE!

4. My Stand-In (TH)

Mid 2024

A stuntman is in an accident, he wakes in another persons body where he runs into the man who broke his heart. This looks and sound unbelievably dark and messy but in the best way possible! I’m so excited to see Up back in a lead role and in a new pairing! Their chemistry looks electric in all the stills. And it’s from the Directors of KinnPorsche and every shot looks just as gorgeous! Ah!

3. Uncovering the Curse of Taekwondo (KR)

We know nothing about this series, just that it’s about Taekwondo and is created by the Queen of the KBL industry (Hwang Da Seul)! Every series she creates is perfection: Where Your Eyes Linger, To My Star 1&2, Blueming and now this! The gorgeous leads above are only rumoured and filming was supposedly Dec-Jan for a 2024 release!

2. My Love Mix Up! (TH)

A boy believes his classmate has a crush on him but it’s a misunderstanding involving a borrowed eraser. GeminiFourth are one of my favourite Thai pairings and so I will watch every single project they’re in! They are my sons! But I’m already a huge fan of the manga and jdrama already. So I am really looking forward to the Thai interpretation! This is from the My School President director so I’m expecting a ton of heart-fluttering cuteness!

I’ve read this Chinese novel and it’s the most beautiful sloooowww-burn: dislike to friends to best-friends to finally LOVE! I’m so happy Taiwan is adapting Chinese danmeis! Ongoing Series - Thai

The Sign (Sat YT) ep 5 of 10 - Fun fun fun. I feel sorry for Yai dealing with these two doomed lovers fated mate drama queens. He got a queen of his own to look after, cut the poor boy some slack.

Meanwhile, if evil... why so shirtless?

Hold on peeps, gotta rip my shirt off in a v stripper way, might get blood on it. Not that I’m complaining. Also, a strap? Man after my own heart. 

Awe. Baby boy has magic sparkle punch!! Yay! 

Meanwhile Phaya is my current fav himbo. These two are beyond pretty together. I love the stark contrast in their fantasies about each other. Phaya's is a way more romantic. Normally I don’t like a white towel sponge bath, but that was the most effective one ever deployed by any BL plot since Love Sick. Well done writer's room. This show is FANTASTIC.

Last Twilight (Fri YT) ep 7 of 12 - I say this every week but I truly love this show. Another pair of great communicators, I love that BL is giving us this right now (rather than the usual run of plot driven by willful miscommunication). I’m sad D was mean to M but I see where they’re coming from (for the purpose of story & plot). And the boys did a great job. Jimmy’s so lovely in this role.

But seriously people: Where did those old shoes come from in the middle of a marathon?

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 4 of 10 - One of the most endearing things about these two is what good communicators they are. The sides are kinda cute: puppy+cat hyung romance. Love that for them (and me).

Twins the series (Fri GaGa) ep 8 of 10 - Sprite & First are so crush confession confused first-time tentative adorable. First got himself such a sweet troubled little puppy. What’s gonna happen when he finds out the big lie? 

Pit Babe (Fri iQIYI) ep 6 of 14 - Jeff and Alan are best boys, i see a glimmer of hope for Way. Omegaverse mpreg possibility confirmed. Trash watch happening here.

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 4 of 12 - I finally figured out that it’s the alternating voiceovers that bother me with this show. It gives it a Japanese manga feel, but I’m not wild about that in my Thai BL. Doc being jelly was fun, tho. Tiny confessions and secret smiles do make me happy. It’s sweet. I’m liking it better this week. 

Bake Me Please (Mon Gaga) ep 5 of 6 - The conflict seems very manufactured. Okay, yes that's normal in BL, but you know what I mean... more than normal. Honestly? I’m on Guy’s side. Screw Shin, and not in a good way. 

Middleman’s Love (Fri YT & iQIYI ep 7 of 8 - I really don’t like it that Jade has to be cruel to Mai. And Mai cruel back. ButJade is sweet when he’s a calm and smiley and shy. Boyfriend ep next week  

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) Pisces of Me ep 18 of 24 - I just found this one extremely boring, I didn’t really enjoy any of the characters. And I think it might be incest? Ugh. 4/10

Night Dream (Sat YT) ep 2 of 6 - It’s a pain to track down and I really didn’t like the first episode so… DNF  

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

VIP Only (Taiwan Fri Gaga) ep 6 of 10 - It’s slow and sweet and fine but not great. Lovely little kitchen back hug. Not sure about the boy from the past. The mom character gave me serious PTSD. 

Sahara-sensei to Toki-kun (Japan Fri Gaga) ep 4 of 8 - No ep this week for JBL reasons. 

It's Airing But...

Playboyy (Thurs Gaga) 14 eps - Dear Playboyy, it's not you, it’s me… I hate you. You’re about as deep (and as palatable) as a shot glass of cum. While I'm sure you’re someone’s kink, you're my weakest link. I DNFed this at ep 5, and frnakly I'm impressed with myself for getting that far.

The Whisperer (Sun ????) 10 eps - Thai horror BL that ALSO involves cheating (what joy is mine). I don't think even the perfect single dimple can motivate me to watch. Word is... it's terrible.

7 Days Before Valentine (Weds WeTV) 10 eps - Giving me Luminous Solution vibes. I'm waiting to binge if safe.

Beyond The Star (Weds iQIYI) 8 eps - House of Stars meets Boyband. I was NOT impressed with ep 1. Been told I shouldn't bother.

What Did You Eat Yesterday Season 2 AKA Kinou Nani Tabeta? Season 2 (Japan Gaga) 10 eps - I find this series more fun to binge, so I'll be doing that when I have a spare day. Crazy work load right now so no idea when that will be. (End of year is a bear for me.)

Behind the Shadows (Korea movie) - This is a historical I was interested in, but I've been told they kill the gay so I'm OUT.

Dead Friend Forever (Thai Sat iQIYI) - horror, meh, tell me if it's worth my time?

IT'S NO LONGER AIRING INTERNATIONAL

Cherry Magic (Sat YouTube) ep 3 of 12 - yeah Japan put the smack down on our boys. Sadness. You can use a VPN if you like.
