Your Sky (Sun iQIYI) ep 12 end - I love this show so much.  So sweet. I adored it when Rak (FINALLY!) took the initiative! 

Conclusion

As pulps go this is right up there with my favorite if all time, My Ride, but for different less complex reasons. This is a relatively simple, old school, endearingly soft story of a fake relationship between a sunshine sweetie and an older reserved rich kid who slowly fall in love. Its soft gentle low-stakes leans into everything I personally love about Thai BL. It’s a warm fuzzy robe of a show. 9/10 

ThamePo (Fri YT) ep 9 of 12 - Thame is the poutyest of pouty babies. I love the ribbing that he got from his group the next morning (that wasn't). That said when we got a kiss it was a VERY GOOD kiss. This is a very me truly great show that I’m enjoying so much. 

The Boy Next World (Sun IQIYI) ep 5 of 10 - I really can’t fault the chemistry with this pair. From kissing to making out they're awesome at ALL OF it. I like the twist (that there is not parallel world jsut the edge of insanity). It's delusional and sus and obsessive and very "seme who missed his meet cute with his uke" and is being forced by a narrative to fast forward. So 90s yaoi. Can Mame push this edge in the right way? Doubtful. But BossNoeul will make it fun for us to watch no matter how questionably messy it gets.

Perfect 10 Liners (Sun YT) ep 15 of 24 - It's fine. Even cute. I think I like PerthSanta better than ForceBook but I really want the next pair the most. 

Sangmin Dinneaw (Sun iQIYI) ep 6 of 10 - Enter my least favorite trope of all time, the amnesia trope. Also random doctor couple. This show is nothing if not erratic.

When it Rains it Pours (Japan Thurs Gaga) ep 5 of 10 - I adore them so much, these two sad desperate horny cheating boys. Lube! Argh. Please! The stark lack of affection in this show is about as dry and painful as the sex must have been. But, its all very tense and I kinda love it's minimalistic angst. 

Eternal Butler (Taiwan Fri Gaga) eps 8 of 12 - what a pity, just throwing away that cute color matched BDSM set. Ever 4 is SO CUTE when he smiles, but he would have been cuter smiling and holding that red bullwhip.

Heart Stain (Korea Weds IQIYI) eps 1-2 of 8 - I like it! It’s Korea doing its all-time favorite trope, the love triangle, but an interesting take. One boy is in love with his teacher but his best friend is in love with him. Let the drama commence.

Impression of Youth (Taiwan Weds Viki) eps 5 of 9 - Such a great brother relationship! My goodness the courage on that kid. Also, they jumped into the sack fast, even for Taiwan.

Fight for Love (Vietnam YT) ep 1 - A new VBL that is actually quite fluffy and charming. It is extremely lightweight but I’m enjoying that aspect. I like Vietnamese comedy more than Thai, I think.

Checkered Shirt (Korea YT) ep 1 of 8 - From the same people sho did Seoul Blues. I like it but this studio isn't vested in HEA so I'm wary. 

FC Soldout (Korea Thurs iQIYI) eps 1-4 of 8 - Huh. Interesting. The premise is kinda fun, even if (you know me) I never like obsessed fans. Creeps me out. That said, everyone is surprisingly gay for a KBL - like gay GAY. I know that’s a weird thing for me to say in a BL, but Korea is usually awfully het about their BL.

Anygay, of course I already like the side couple best. The gruff team captain and the pretty idol with a sad past win. WIN WIN. Give me an entire show about them please.

Teenager Judge (Vietnam Sat YT) ep 18 of 20 - (the end is in sight, but sheesh!) it was OK because mostly it was all the friends over at the house and doing stuff together. But still not a lot is happening.

It's airing but......

I Will Turn Back Time (China Gaga) 6 eps - It’s Chinese, no idea if it will end well or not. But it’s the stepbrothers trope. Still, I’m not gonna watch it until it’s done.

Love in the Big City: A Proposal to Extend the Discourse

Many of us have been anticipating this full length drama adaptation of the beloved novel by Sang Young Park for months, and when you watch the trailer above, you can see why: this is a queer story through and through, written semi-autobiographically by a queer man in South Korea about his own experiences, and then lovingly and determinedly made into a live action drama to bring his story to more people. It's a landmark show in the Korean media landscape; nothing of its kind has been made before. And that is exactly why the show is drawing harsh backlash before it even airs. It's too honest, too heartfelt, too steeped in empathy and understanding for the nuances of the queer experience in a suppressive society, and that scares people who want to continue shoving queer folks back in the closet.

As a result of this backlash, the story, which mirrors the novel by being structured in four parts with a different director and focus story in each set of two episodes, is being released in one giant episode dump to ensure that it all makes it onto air. Sang Young Park himself confirmed that conservative groups in South Korea are trying to prevent this show from being seen, and he is fighting to keep promoting it and will ensure its release on October 21st. It will air on TVING in South Korea and on Viki for the international audience.

The best thing we can do to fight back against this kind of censorship is to watch the show loudly, to write and make art about it and celebrate it, and to do that for more than just a couple days. Earlier this year, @bengiyo and I started the Love in the Big City book club to read the novel with friends in anticipation of this drama's release. For four weeks we coordinated weekly discussion posts to correspond to each part of the story, and we intend to do the same with the show. Given what's going on with attempts to suppress this story, I want to open up that invitation beyond those of us who are participating in the book club to include anyone who wants to watch and talk about this show, regardless of whether you've read the novel.

So here's the proposal:

Beginning Monday, October 21st when the show drops, we'll each watch the show on whatever cadence we like (personally, I will be watching two episodes at a time with breaks in between, because that is how it was made and intended to be seen)

Regardless of when we each actually watch it, we will post weekly starting on Mondays about each part of the story in turn. So the week of October 21st we will post art and meta and reactions to Part 1 (episodes 1 and 2), and each subsequent week we'll post about the next part (or each set of two episodes).

Ben and I will also write up and post book club discussion questions each Tuesday that will be more about the adaptation to live action and comparisons to the novel. Anyone who has read the book is very welcome to respond to those even if you haven't been in book club with us previously.

My hope with this proposed schedule is that we can keep discussion of the drama alive for a solid month and give it its full due. Tumblr is a crucial part of the fandom ecosystem and I want to do our part to ensure this show isn't buried. This is a complex story with so much nuance, and if we binge and forget about it in a few days, we cannot do it justice. I want to support Sang Young Park and so many others whose stories have been forced under wraps by this kind of oppression, and I would love it if you all would join me.

I think part of the beauty of this episode is that Dee had been building up his first kiss into this huge thing for him and all about love and of this huge importance but the he went and he kissed Yak and it didn't solve anything. It didn't magically make them better or happier or fix their relationship or anything. It was a kiss, a good kiss, it was long overdue and it did nothing for them.

Dee is clinging to romantic ideals, to the idea of romance, rather then the actual act of it. He wants this to be like he always dreamed, to be simple and straight forward, to not need anything but a kiss and a confession.

But love is not that simple. Not real love. Because real love is real people and real complexities and real pain.

That's why it works. Because Yak lost the fight and now Dee gave him his first kiss but in the end it won't solve or change anything because it doesn't matter, not really, not if Dee doesn't back it up with words and actions.

Dee had built up so much for this kiss and so hard the audience through both of them and their desire but in the end a kiss is just a kiss. It can be an expression of emotion and love but it's also just a kiss.

And a kiss doesn't solve anything.

I think a lot about how we as a culture have turned “forever” into the only acceptable definition of success.

Like… if you open a coffee shop and run it for a while and it makes you happy but then stuff gets too expensive and stressful and you want to do something else so you close it, it’s a “failed” business. If you write a book or two, then decide that you don’t actually want to keep doing that, you’re a “failed” writer. If you marry someone, and that marriage is good for a while, and then stops working and you get divorced, it’s a “failed” marriage.

The only acceptable “win condition” is “you keep doing that thing forever”. A friendship that lasts for a few years but then its time is done and you move on is considered less valuable or not a “real” friendship. A hobby that you do for a while and then are done with is a “phase” - or, alternatively, a “pity” that you don’t do that thing any more. A fandom is “dying” because people have had a lot of fun with it but are now moving on to other things.

I just think that something can be good, and also end, and that thing was still good. And it’s okay to be sad that it ended, too. But the idea that anything that ends is automatically less than this hypothetical eternal state of success… I don’t think that’s doing us any good at all.

Wandee Goodday - Episode 5

Once again, Wandee Goodday continues to knock it out of the park. This show is just getting it right and I really hope that they can keep this going all the way to the end.

Dee and Yak are both falling for each other. We can see it happening through their looks, words and actions. We can also see them realising it too which is a refreshing change from the norm where the audience knows well before the character does.

What’s even better though is the realism of them still having feelings for the person they liked before. Yak likes Dee but he’s still attracted to Taem. Dee likes Yak but there’s still feelings for Dr Ter (which looks like it will be a feature of the next episode). Both have liked these people for a long time and those feelings don’t just go away because you meet someone new or, in Dee’s case, they turn out to be a gaslighting jackass! Yes, Dee has managed to resist the lure of Dr Ter’s requests but there’s still hints that his feelings are there and he’s repressing them.

For both Yak and Dee’s relationship, Yak has to see through his feelings for Taem. He has to pursue her and see what he has with her in comparison to what he has with Dee. He needs to realise that to be with Taem means changing himself slightly - we’ve already seen this with the clothes - whereas with Dee, he is just being himself. Dee likes Yak as is and that’s the key for who Yak really should be with in the end.

As for Dee, I think he also needs to have that moment of weakness, where he can’t resist Dr Ter, so he can realise that Dr Ter can’t provide him with the loving relationship that Yak gives him. We didn’t get much of what Dee and Dr Ter’s relationship was like prior to the disastrous date but it seemed remarkably one sided, with Dee putting in more effort than Dr Ter did. With Yak, there’s a nice balance between the two of them and both being willing to help the other out, even if it is at their own expense, and there’s an openness with showing who they are/who they love without any shame to have others see it.

Yak and Dee need to see the other side so they can miss what they already have with each other. They’ve built a relationship based on a solid friendship, with great communication, sexual attraction and now the romantic attraction is building. Once they realise what they could have with Taem/Dr Ter, it’s going to help them realise that what they actually need was the fake relationship that changed to a proper relationship without either of them realising it at the time. Done right, this will be the good kind of drama for their storyline.

How amazing is Dee’s grandma? She accepts him for him, even if it did mean finding a semi-naked guy in bunny ears in his apartment! She also didn’t question him on his choice of relationship when Dee was telling her about the real situation with him and Yak, and how he can’t fall for him as it’s only a short-term deal but seeing them together on the couch, she will have known there’s more to it, however, she’s willing to let him figure it out himself. Dee is lucky to have her, and Kao, as a support network.

Kao might not be featured much but he continues to be an amazing character. I loved his pure joy at getting such high ratings for his new business/therapy venture. I’m hoping we can get even more to his character fleshed out with a love interest because I would hate it if GMMTV went with the openly asexual character only for it to be a token gesture. They need to run with it and let this be more of a featured storyline, and not just with people not understanding what he’s looking for and not pursuing any further relationship - give Kao someone who understands and still wants to be with him!

We got a bit more of Yei and Cher this week but their storyline felt like something was missing. A lot of what we’ve seen with Yei and Cher is Yei being clingy or trying to instigate something physical with Cher, with Cher being a bit resistant (although I’ve always put this down to location rather than lack of interest). This week, however, Cher is questioning Yei’s interest because he hasn’t been touching him and wondering if he’s seeing someone else. We needed an episode that showed this, with Yei being a bit more distant rather than the short, seconds long clip of them in bed together with Yei turning away from Cher, to have this truly make an impact. Without that, it really just seemed like unnecessary drama thrown in to make things interesting for their pairing. A giant fail for me - the first and hopefully only fail that this show will deliver.

This Is A Gay Asian Rant About BL Comments Made By Some Queer Westerners I See Sometimes.

So you know of those gays (usually white) that made dumb tiktok dancing to list of countries that legalized same sex marriage and list of countries that discriminate against LGBTQIA+ poeple as a way to say something racist. yeah i kinda got the same vibes from some comments regard how asian BL is homophobic just cause they don't live up to queer western standard. look, i'm not saying that some BLs and their creators don't deserve criticism regard how they capitalized/exploited queerness for an easy cash grab.

But people need to understand that Asian countries despite recent progress are still very much culturally conservatives. so when people says that thai bl is homophobic and all the characters looks like bunch of straight guys, which is true for some olders thai BLs i'm not gonna denied that. but after all this time and newer BLs generally being very queer and most of creators being out queer themself and poeple still making these comments, i'm annoyed.

And don't get me start on the actors. you don't know them! why are you making assumption and calling them queerbaiter just cause they acts in bl. like maybe they're straight, maybe they're not but what they're definitely doing is making queer content for you know, queer people here. so when you made halfass comments about their sexuality what do you think that made other queer people who still in the closet feels. and when you add the nationality to that, "these thai bl pair are this and that, this korean actor is so ungrateful for his bl past", etc. when our societies are still very much still in progress regard LGBTQIA+ acceptance. it make us living here feels fucking awful like somehow we're lesser queer than people in the west just cause we don't have citibank at pride or some shit.

And the shittiest in my humbled opinion are comments regard censored chinese bls. people do know like, that the creators making these bls are risking their livelihoods for this. that these shows getting make at all are miracles. yes it sucked that they're censored but they're still very much queer shows making by queer people who want to express thier queerness despite the chinese government being the chinese government. when people dimissing these shows as not belonging in queer media, you're also dimissing their creators and audiences as not belonging in the community.

Look what i want to say is that we're trying our best over here, and maybe our best are not up to your liking. the ways we talk and express our queerness maybe still can be perceived as problematic by western queer standard. but these media are our house and you're the guests. for people aren't shitty we appreciated that you're here engaging and loving our media, this is your home too and you're welcome in it. i can speak for myself that i very much love being here on tumblr and interacting with people from all over the world who love BL. but for people who are being shitty sometimes about asian bl.
