At best of times I don't know how they manage to go to sleep each night and wake up each morning. It's numbed normalcy, they say. Self-inflicted detachment." Camille O'Connell, the Police Chief said to the FBI Agent Stefan Salvatore. "So, you can suck it up. Work with them or without them - I don't care. But I'm not taking them off the case."

The Agent looked at the Police Chief tilting his head curiously.

Meanwhile, in the French Quarter

"I wonder if Mercedes will help us this time?" Elijah said to his partner before entering the Magic Shop.

Elena just raised her eyebrows wordlessly following the vampire in.

"Now, kisa mwen ka fè pou ou detektif?" Mercedes Lézare said. "We don't have the key to the divination you're looking for."

"And how do you know what we are looking for?" Elijah said in a very patient low voice not looking at the witch.

"Li nan mond lespri a kounye a. Epi ou pa ka antre nan li, vanpir." Mercedes said in her native tongue.

"I may not be able to enter the spirit world, but you know that detective Gilbert can." Elijah turned to the witch.

The witch gulped, sighing inwardly. She knew that the doppelganger was a Shadow dweller.

"Leave me out of this. You go to Papa Oba and get to the Underworld." Mercedes said, clutching her emerald amulet as she stepped back.

"Papa Oba is nowhere to be found." Elena said calmly. "And you know that. My father was a demon and I am a Shadow dweller, but I don't hurt people. You don't have to be afraid if me."

"You are an Omen. And I will always be beware of you - fè nwa."

If your plot feels flat, STUDY it! Your story might be lacking...

Stakes - What would happen if the protagonist failed? Would it really be such a bad thing if it happened?

Thematic relevance - Do the events of the story speak to a greater emotional or moral message? Is the conflict resolved in a way that befits the theme?

Urgency - How much time does the protagonist have to complete their goal? Are there multiple factors complicating the situation?

Drive - What motivates the protagonist? Are they an active player in the story, or are they repeatedly getting pushed around by external forces? Could you swap them out for a different character with no impact on the plot? On the flip side, do the other characters have sensible motivations of their own?

Yield - Is there foreshadowing? Do the protagonist's choices have unforeseen consequences down the road? Do they use knowledge or clues from the beginning, to help them in the end? Do they learn things about the other characters that weren't immediately obvious?
