kate o’hare was a socialist + antiwar activist, jailed during WWI for promoting said views—and yeah this incident recorded in her journals is fucking me up
When her 14-year-old son visited, [Kate] O’Hare was upset that warders denied him permission to play his trumpet for her. But they had no control over what happened outside the prison’s walls. “Last night we were locked in our cells waiting for the lights to be turned out when suddenly I heard a sweet but wavering note that I instantly recognized as Dick’s cornet… Nothing ever sounded sweeter than the noble strains of ‘Lead Kindly Light.’ Before the first bar was ended a dead silence reigned … From cell to cell a whisper ran ‘Be still and listen—it is Mrs. O’Hare’s son!’ No artist ever held an audience more breathless … When he played ‘Silver Threads among the Gold’ I could hear the women sobbing.”
idk who needs to hear this but when your english teacher asks you to explain why an author chose to use a specific metaphor or literary device, it’s not because you won’t be able to function in real-world society without the essential knowledge of gatsby’s green light or whatever, it’s because that process develops your abilities to parse a text for meaning and fill in gaps in information by yourself, and if you’re wondering what happens when you DON’T develop an adult level of reading comprehension, look no further than the dizzying array of examples right here on tumblr dot com
i feel like not enough ppl are factoring in the cultural clash between laios and shuro and the many micro agressions shuro faced while being in their group. literally the name 'shuro' in itself is one
his name is toshiro 😭 lets also not forget that he has his own communication issues, in the opposite way that laios does- thats literally a factor in their argument, that his envy for laios's ability to express himself sincerely manifested as part of his distaste for him.
ig all this to say like, was their fight heart wrenching, especially when reading laios as autistic? absolutely. anybody whos ever been in laios's position knows how much it hurts to realize someone you thought was your friend doesnt actually like having you around, especially when they didnt tell you and you had no way of knowing due to not understanding their cues. but im begging yall to step back and see the nuance of this situation cause im gonna be real a lot of you are kinda just brushing over it acting like everything is toshiros fault and that hes a terrible person when in reality hes an average guy who really, really clashed with laios and it led to a very long misunderstanding due to their supremely opposite methods of communication. even laios and toshiro, after letting everything out in their fight, were able to come to an understanding and start a foundation for an actual friendship built on better communication
having collaborative ocs with friends will have you saying shit like "what if scimble was bumpus wouldnt that be funny" and then like two weeks later its one of the most important pieces of lore you have
far too old to care about fandom opinions i am an adult with a *sees a take* hm. never mind actually. i am in fact so blessed to have a huge brain and correct inconsequential opinions on fictional characters. there but for the grace of god go i
one thing i've always kinda appreciated about bastille is how they put their collaboration stuff with other artists on albums they call "other people's heartache" like there's something really special about that. to me.
An archivist found a long forgotten 8mm film reel in an old metal box, marked “Philippines 1942”. Thinking it was lost WWII footage, he sent it in to be restored/digitized. When he got the footage back, he found puppies instead (via)
