Decided to make a new portrait for one of my oldest D&D characters.  Robin left home in the company of a master bard, with dreams of becoming a bard himself at age 12.  There isn’t much that Robin cares about and most things in life he sees as either passing amusements or annoyances, but his music and his career as a bard are dead serious to him.  He spends hours and hours learning new methods, practicing, composing, and perfecting his skills.  He was so determined not to return home that when he was young, he would play until his fingers bled, and his master would have to heal him.  He’s had a rough time of it and puts on a sarcastic, uncaring front, but beneath all the bravado he’s a hopeless romantic, desperate not to be found out.

WWII Era Vampires

Giving their neighbors their rations claiming that the government fucked up that week because they noticed that they’re going without trying to feed their kids.

Signing up for the draft cuz, “Fuck it. We can’t die by their weapons anyway. I’ll fight for the country I’ve lived in for the past century.”

Vampire nurses who know when the blood’s gone bad or what type of blood you need (because blood typing was fairly new during WWII).

The baby faced forever 18 vampire siting with the older soldiers cuz he’s seen the same shit they’ve seen, even though he can’t tell them. They’re all watching the young “I’m going to be a hero” boys, sadly waiting for the ball to drop.

The vampire that has to explain how he was the only survivor in the ambush and why the enemy is torn to shreds.

The vampire solider, holding his best mate since his childhood begging and crying, “Please, let me do this.” But his mate won’t let him because he’s more afraid of living forever and watching the world move on without him.

Then, 70 years later, they come to the memorial, to commemorate everyone that fought, everyone that fell, and an old man looks at him strangely and says, “You look just like your Grandfather.”

Somewhere, in this closet, Kendra owned a dress, a classy one. She’d been tempted to opt for pants when she couldn’t initially find it, but now on her hands and knees digging through a drawer she was determined. It was a matter of pride. And she wanted to look classy. She wanted to match Gray, look like she belonged with him, and not the gremlin she usually did when she broke into Hatter’s Mansion in her never-ending mission to be as much of an inconvenience as physically possible. 

Eventually, she found it. It was mercifully not wrinkled and fit. Thank God. She tossed it on and gave it a quick spin. It was black, because she had an aversion to color she was learning, with a reasonable neckline, no sleeves, and ended a bit above her knees. It also flared out when she spun but that was extra. 

Now that she had a dress she had the accompanying anxiety or if it was too girly. If it suited her. And then she recalled who she was going on a date with an laughed. Gray would like it. And she was comfortable in it. It was fine. It might, however, need shorts, though upon further reflection it seemed as though it’d be long enough without them. She would need a purse though. Did she own a purse? She did. Amazingly. It was small, and silver, and a gift, and fit her wallet and that was the important part. 

Clothes managed Kendra popped over to the vanity. She’d asked Vivaldi to show her how to do makeup so she had some confidence in her skills. Some. Basic stuff. With some effort, and several quitips, Kendra managed a dark lipstick, eyeliner that wasn’t a child’s crayon drawing and eyeshadow. She was almost proud. 

Confident that she looked alright Kendra left the room and looked it. And then stopped. Nerves caught up to her as she lingered awkwardly in the hallway. This was her first date with Gray and she was suddenly nervous. Were they already friends? Absolutely. Did they already have semi-frequent gratifying sex? Sure. But dates were different. Dates were. Romantic. And sweet. And if it went poorly she could always run screaming and go back to being homeless living in the forest of doors. What was she worried about? 

Still, she couldn’t help the grin that tugged at the corner of her lip as she went to go meet Gray down at the grand foyer. She really was excited.

He’d gotten there first, and seemed to be waiting nervously. Or at least she could tell he was nervous. On the outside, he was still his calm cool collected self but his hands were fidgeting with something. He did that when he was fretting. On that note, he looked amazing, and she withheld the need to wolf whistle. She could be classy. She could manage that. Even if she desperately wanted to slide down the banister. 

“Sorry, am I late?” she asked when she finally got down the steps and ran over to him.

Never As We Plan

Gray stood in front of his vanity mirror, dressed in only a pair of suit pants as he examined his body. He was freshly showered and clean. He looked fine, at least to him. But how far did he need to go? 

The Lizard toyed with a strand of his hair, scrutinizing his reflection like he could silently interrogate himself. He wasn’t an unattractive man. But on a night that was supposed to be special, how much extra effort did he have to put into his appearance? Carefully, he twisted open a jar of hair gel he had bought earlier that day and dipped the pads of his middle fingers into the styling material. Rubbing it over his fingers first, he ran it through his hair, just enough to give it body. First he slicked it back. Then he pulled it back forward. Then he ruffled his hair until the gel stuck it in unruly spikes. Oh, good lord. That was not appealing.

What on earth is getting into me…? he thought as he abandoned his hair to button up a silk shirt. Kendra had been in the tower for a little while now. They’d seen pretty much all there was to see of each other. But still, this was their first official date. Why was he nervous? The idea that this would also be his first official date ever tickled at the back of his mind. Perhaps the unknown was more nerve wracking than the casual flings and nothing relationships of his past. After all, lovers went on dates. It’s a bit more serious than a woman you’re friends with and enjoyed the company of…in multiple senses of the phrase. 

Gray rolled up his sleeves to his elbows and looked back in the mirror, chuckling at the spiky mess that was still his hair. He was being silly. He should just be happy he finally gets to spend some alone time with Kendra. And hopefully she’ll be just as eager to see him. Gray ran his fingers back through his hair,  slicking it back a little, but keeping it relaxed. Special, but casual~ Then he strapped himself down with a small armory of hidden weapons. You never know.

Ready at last, Gray made his way down to the grand foyer of the Clover Tower where he and Kendra said they’s meet, a slim, flat box in his hand. Still a few minutes early, he leaned against a wall and waited for his date. His first date. The Lizard spun the box between his fingers absently as he waited for Kendra a slight smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he allowed himself to be a little excited. They had the whole “night” ahead of them and he fully intended to take advantage of every tick.
