When Finn McMissile Dreams

Finn often finds himself cycling between two different types of dreams whenever he dreams of Leland.

The first takes him back to the moment he found him on the oil rigs. He relives the fear and the pain of discovering the crumpled corpse of someone who has been with him through thick and thin no matter what. He often wakes from this one with a jolt, covered in sweat and panting like he'd just run a marathon.

The second takes him back to happier times. Memories that dance and spin with joy, love and elation. The moments he wished would have lasted a lifetime and longer.

The latter scares him the most. Because he knows that once his eyelids flutter open, and his sleep induced stupor fades back into reality, Leland's presence will fade with it. Once more, a lonely existence emerges to greet him.

Ooooh, this post got my brain rolling and my motivation for writing back again (which I haven't had for a long time, so thank you, @champmorado!). I now have a couple of theories on some of the aforementioned points.

I think Strip might be so chill about Chick being a massive dick because he understands that, while his behaviour is not acceptable, it doesn't originate from a place of direct malice. I feel it is safe to assume that Chick's father was also once a piston cup racer. This is the individual that taught Chick to cheat and win by any means necessary, even going as far as to yell at his son for helping another racer. Great parenting, mate. Nice one! I think it would also be fair to assume that, considering Strip Weathers age, he probably once raced with Chick's father, potentially birthing a generational track feud. If Chick's father had once raced with Strip, it would go to reason that Chick's bigotry and hatred towards the veteran race car was taught to him. Strip, knowing his full worth and having matured beyond petty dramas, is not one to perpetuate it or give it much attention. While Chick is actively trying to cause the old boy a bit of misery, Strip notices that the pain he tries to inflict is only testament to how Chick feels about himself, and it contains the echoes of lessons his less than amicable father once drilled into him. Instead of having anger, he just pities him.

Considering the above, I am convinced that Strip has had some trauma himself. The levels of tolerance and understanding he displays for the arrogant fool most likely comes from a deep understanding of pain. Strip however, seems to have healed incredibly well from this and thus navigates these situations with empathy and gentility. He probably also got to witness just how vile Chick's father was to him on the racetrack. He hopes one day to be able to get through to Chick.

I am incredibly enthused by the last portion of this analysis as it has formed a headcanon (bit of a dark one ahead, so be warned). Chick essentially abandoned his racing career, choosing to retire. Although the reason for this is not specified, there are a couple obvious possible motives. I could not find a specific timeframe either, so I would put it relatively soon after the events of the first movie. My own theory for his retirement is some form of desertion by his father. He is unnamed, but for future references, lets call him Axel.

Chick went to see Axel just after the final race, and his words to Chick were not kind. Chick's win of the tiebreaker race was not enough for Axel, seeing as there were only two other cars in the race and the only reason he 'won' in the first instance was because Lightning came to a screeching halt just before the finish line. Axel had the innate displeasure of watching his son being humiliated onstage after the race, and when he heard of his rejection from the Dinoco sponsorship, he was not happy. He told his son that he had brought shame to the family legacy. He told him he had failed and that he should probably just give up racing entirely to prevent any further embarrassment from occurring. Chick took this to heart, and he retired from the circuit when he began to feel like his father was right.

Eventually, he went into media and became the host of his own show, clinging to and bragging about his one and only win as if it would still bring him his fathers approval and praise; something he so desperately craves. McQueen became the lightning rod of all of Chicks abuses as Chick potentially blames him, at least on a subconscious level, for his fathers disgust in him. On the other tyre, McQueen, was actively living the life Axel had pushed Chick into. And so, still vying for his fathers attentions and an outlet to distribute his pain, Chick continued his disagreeable tirade against his old track enemy. Seeing McQueen living the life he was supposed to hurt Chick beyond measure. He was not about to miss an opportunity to mar him if he could.

He has still not come to the realisation that he isn't living his own dreams. He is simply trapped in the image his father forced him to see in the mirror. Unfortunately, it seems that the young, enthusiastic drama student is long gone. Such a sad existence to always see the people around you as your enemies.

i still think it's interesting how. chill(?) chick & strip are about each other, considering how chick was called the runner-up to strip for almost his whole career and. y'know. The Crash

obviously there's animosity in cars 1 (all of it coming from chick). chick insults strip's age, strip cheekily speeds up after taking a look back at chick, and the biggest one: The Crash

then in the rally race comic, which takes place the season immediately following The Crash, strip shows absolutely no ill will towards chick??

after getting insulted, strip just tells chick to fuck off in the nicest way possible

and he even tells mcqueen to invite him to the charity race!!!! and acknowledges chick's win as being valid!!!!

later on, chick insults strip (and his friends) some more, they have a face-off that was pretty tame compared to the other shit chick was doing in that same race, and in the final race, strip, mario andretti, and darrell cartrip do some trolling to chick and end up taking him out of the race. it was pretty deserved though since chick was being a major asshole the whole time

then after that.... nothing!! there's no other major installment where we see their rivalry again, and in cars 3 neither of them acknowledge each other's existence at all!! what gives!!!!

my personal explanation is that mcqueen replaced strip as chick's #1 biggest rival in his head, so chick just leaves strip in the past (where he thinks he belongs anyways), and strip is such a good person or whatever that he took the moral high road (lol) and immediately "forgave" chick (in reality he sees the hit to chick's reputation as punishment enough and isn't seeking any more retribution than that)

so yea. sometimes a racing rivalry will fuck you up forever and leave you still talking about the other guy on your tv show a whole decade later, and sometimes it just sorta dissipates 🤷‍♂️
