Hygge - a mood of coziness conviviality with feelings of wellness and contentment

Suna turned in his seat as the class was released for lunch. Most students were up and out of their seats, finding their friends and making plans. Except for Suna and his seatmate, Osamu. Normally, Osamu would be shoveling his lunch into his mouth, making sure Suna was eating as well, but today, Osamu was slumped over on his desk, head resting on his arm and his breathing steady in an early-afternoon doze. Suna glanced over at his friend, turning in his seat to fully face him, holding up his phone. Suna always took photos of his friends and teammates, mostly for blackmail but sometimes "just because." And this photo of Osamu sleeping at his desk, Suna observed, would be "just because."

He closes out of the photo (he had admittedly taken quite a few before settling on this one), scrolling through his socials before looking over at Osamu over the top of his phone. The boy hadn't moved at all, and even though he was facing away from Suna, he knew that Osamu's face would be fully relaxed and peaceful, an expression that only came with sleep. Maybe he was actually fully asleep... Maybe...

Carefully, almost without thinking, Suna moved his hand from his phone, reaching tentatively towards his friend. His fingertips met the desk between them before slowly walking across the surface towards Osamu's hand. His movements continued to be slow and careful and he got closer to the other boy, fingers brushing lightly against his skin before sliding along his fingers, fitting their hands hesitantly together. Like they were almost holding hands...

As he held Osamu's hand in his, Suna's filled with a warmth, a light that settles in his chest. These moments, ones where he could just exist, just be, with his best friend, were his favorites. And he almost didn't want this one to end. He was lost in thought and missed the first twitch of Osamu's hand under his, but he didn't miss the way Osamu shifted, his hand turning slightly as he sat up, turning his head to look at him with half-open eyes. Suna watches as Osamu blinks, looking down at their hands before looking back at him. "Suna?"

Suna tries to pull away, to pretend it never happened, but Osamu wouldn't let him, his finger's tightening around Suna's and keeping him in place. "Uh... I... can't explain?" Suna watches as Osamu's mouth quirks up in a small smile, and the warmth that had settled in his chest heated up slightly.

"It's okay... I understand." Osamu continued to smile and he spoke, and Suna could feel his fingers shift under his own, moving to intertwine their fingers, palms pressed together. The warmth in his chest heats again, filling his entire body with the subtle heat, and a sense of rightness washes over Suna. He can't help as he squeezes Osamu's hand in his. And when Osamu squeezes back, everything is right.
