Old Akkadian Fossiliferous Limestone Cylinder Seal with Water-God Enki, Akkadian II, 2294-2270 BC
A fossiliferous limestone cylinder seal with a warlike god in slash-skirt, armed with a barrow in the left hand and a mace in his right hand; on the right side is the god Enki (Ea) with four streams of water flowing from the shoulders, left foot resting on a pedestal signifying mountains, four fish in the streams, recumbent cow in profile at the god’s feet; crescent between the gods; possibly a contemporary copy with the picture detail of the famous Old Akkadian seal of the scribe Adda; engraved with a square panel with four lines of cuneiform text: 1. KIŠIB X 2. UR-li-bé-lí 3. SAG-ͩna NANNA (ŠEŠ-KI) 4. DUMU LUGAL-NI-ZU.
The fossils in the red limestone are Foraminifera, probably Triticites ventricosus, sometimes called ‘rice fossils.’ They were particularly abundant in the Carboniferous Period, 359-299 million years ago.

Old Babylonian Hematite Cylinder Seal, C. 1800 BC
The hematite cylinder seal shows a male (possibly a king) standing on a podium while holding a mace. He is standing behind a goddess (probably  lama), who wears a robed necklace with a counterweight in the back and a horned cap. She is standing behind a king in a ceremonial robe king who’s making an animal offering to Shamash, the sun god. Shamash holds a saw-toothed pruning blade (sassaru) and rests his foot on a couchant human-headed bull with its head facing front. Traces of an inscription remain that were erased in antiquity. The style of this seal suggests that it was made in a Sippar workshop.
It is thought that the male on the podium, sometimes called called the “figure with mace,” may be a generalized representation of the king or a deified former king. These are usually depicted standing in a three-quarter position, wearing a rounded cap and a short wrap-around robe which is knotted on one side.
A lama was a deity who originated with the Sumerians as a goddess of intercession and protection. She acted as an intermediary between people and the gods. She is depicted in a long, tiered robe and a horned cap. Generally such a deity was anonymous.
