Monstress Reviews- Madison Coffey
Most of the reviews of Takeda art focus on the widely diverse sources of influence she drew to illustrate the work. She uses steam punk, Egyptian art, Japanese and Chinese artwork. They highlight the continuity in quality between the cover and the story content, and praise it for it’s ability to combine violence and beauty. They criticize her use of panel layout, specifically Paste Magazine, for it’s lack of originality, arguing that it draws from the action and motion in fight scenes and becomes repetitive.
The reviews of Monstress’s story focus on the importance of female characters by upending traditional feminine values and bringing to light the struggles of women formed from the violence of war. The story blends traditional Chinese and Japanese mythology and the unclear balance of good and evil.
