one charming facet of tolkien's works is how willing immortals with very odd names are to let mortals come up with nicknames for them that are more comprehensible. you could go your entire life assuming that you've got a pretty good grasp on a wizard and then realise that you'd been introduced to him by a name some cunt whose name history was good at remembering gave him several thousand years ago

it's fun to use parentheticals like little punches in the face. harder to do that in the text proper, only so many ways you can interrupt a sentence, but if you hit someone with something like "sword and sorcery (here to be read as theosophic fantasy)" they're probably going to stall over and read that one again
