What I learned from HCDE210
Ethical considerations are huge in Human Centered Design practice. HCD is not just designing some cool products, but HCD is about considering diverse users’ values and understanding their needs to make a better user experience. People don’t want products/systems that make them feel negatively. Being creative and good at problem solving are important as well, but the most important thing for human centered designer would be being empathetic. I learned how to conduct user research, usability testing, data visualization, interaction design and so many other HCD skills. All the time, we talk about ethical considerations such as privacy and morality. This is for human, we are not doing this for technology. Technology is a tool to connect human and society. As a human centered designer, we need to learn how to use technologies wisely. First of all, we need to think about future consequences how my design will change people’s lives positively and negatively. I was so immersed into my design when I did first interaction design sprint. I did not think about users thoroughly, I just thought ‘they are users, so they will use it anyways’. Users don’t just use whatever things we create. They have their own values and expectations, and we need to understand them.
