Cereal Bowl XLI Recap
Cereal Bowl XLI
“The Greatest Comeback That Never Was”
BAL 10 3 3 7 23<
TAC 0 0 0 16 16
2-5. October 19, 2014. The Tacoma Narrows had just fallen to an insurmountable 2-5 mark after yet another disastrous defeat, this time to their arch rival Seattle Serpents 18-14. Narrows QB Bryon Phelps sat on the mud covered grass at Boeing Stadium after throwing his 3rd INT of the contest, this time at the Serpents’ 12 yard line to put a cap on yet another Tacoma defeat. He looked up at the dark grey sky while the steam of his breath flew into the night sky and a sea of over 80,000 navy blue and green fans screamed and rejoiced at the sight of the Tacoma field general sat by himself at the 18 yard line. “Never again.” Those two five letter words were all Phelps muttered to a slew of reporters before gliding off the podium and made his way to the team bus.
Just one week later, cross the country, the Baltimore Bisons took to the field in Raleigh, NC to battle their division rival Carolina Flyers, who at 6-1, were perched comfortably atop the Mid-Atlantic division, their counterpart, the Baltimore Bisons weren’t as fortunate after the first seven weeks of the regular season. They were yet again a formative squad who would never play to their potential, on their way to another mediocre campaign. The 3-3 Bisons were staring at a 21-10 deficit and their third consecutive defeat, then, Trey Summers turned into a league MVP. 38 straight points in the second half to seal a 48-21 win and put the entire league on notice.
Oddly enough, they were the last two standing. Both teams with 11-5 marks, both the number one overall seed in their conference, both with a chance to attain football immortality.
The teams had taken the field, the Narrows deferred the ball to the second half and at 6:45 EST in Ashburn, Virginia, the stage was set for the biggest sporting event in Western civilization, the Cereal Bowl. The Narrows, fresh off their 11th straight victory, this time a 38-29 victory over the Golden State Bayhawks in the Western Championship were a slight 3.5 point favorite at kickoff. Baltimore came out with guns blazing, showcasing their franchise quarterback and 2014 Offensive MVP Trey Summers to 119.9 million viewers against the third ranked defense in the MLF. On the first drive alone, the Bisons amassed 7 first downs, a mark that the Narrows wouldn’t reach until midway through the third quarter. A poised Bisons offensive line completely neutralized the Narrows vaunted front seven, while receivers Steven Smith and Calvin Williams carved up the best secondary in football. An 80 yard, 13 play drive that concluded with a 9 yard touchdown strike to Williams that earned Baltimore a 7-0 lead, which they wouldn’t relinquish until the fourth quarter. On the other side, the Cereal Bowl XXXIX MVP wasn’t looking as valuable as he did in during the 2012-13 season finale. Phelps was rendered completely useless for the first three quarters of the game. Tacoma’s defense consistently had its back against wall during the first half, but only allowed one touchdown in that span, which kept the offensively challenged Narrows in the ball game throughout. What was built as a QB duel between two of the youngest and most talented signal callers the league has to offer, was anything but. Bryon Phelps couldn’t seem to find anything besides the FedEx Stadium turf. While Summers and the Bisons couldn’t help but move the ball down the field yet couldn’t do anything inside the opponent’s redzone. At halftime, the Bisons held a 13-0 lead over the Narrows, outgaining Tacoma 271 to 64 in the first half but only being able to get the ball into the endzone on the first drive of the game. The third quarter produced more of the same, and the Baltimore Bisons took a commanding 16-0 lead over the Tacoma Narrows with all but fifteen minutes to play until a MLF champion was crowned. The Narrows confidence never wavered.
Bryon Phelps went 9-31 with only 48 YDS after three quarters. That didn’t matter. Tacoma had the ball at their own 3 yard line on 3rd down and 12 to open up the final quarter of play. Phelps lined up in the shotgun and stood in the middle of his own endzone waiting for a receiver to get open, then, his impatience became a virtue. With a clean pocket, Phelps took off with the football, spinning away form two Bison defenders and hurled his body in the air towards the first down marker, getting hammered by three defenders, twisting him around like a tilt-a-whirl, as he extended his arms out to reach the first down marker, he collapsed to the turf in a collision so loud that it could be heard even by spectators in the nosebleed seats. The side judge raced toward the QB, grabbing the football and placing it on what looked to be the 15 yard line. He signaled a first down, and the Narrows sideline went absolutely crazy. The game had changed on that one scramble, and the Narrows offense made sure of that. The drive concluded with the Narrows’ first points of the contest, on a 33 yard FG to trim the deficit to 16-3 early in the fourth quarter. The Narrows D did its job, forcing Baltimore to a three-and-out. Phelps and the Tacoma offense trotted on to the field with the ball at their own 29 yard line and just 10:01 left in Cereal Bowl XLI, when Narrows WR Spokey MacAdoo took control. Phelps found him on nine consecutive plays leading Tacoma inside the Bisons 10 yard line for the first time in the game. On 4th and goal, Phelps scrambled around the pocket, and zipped a pass to the back of the endzone to none other, than Spokey MacAdoo. Touchdown Narrows. The Tacoma sideline lost its collective mind even when kicker Max Katz had his extra point blocked because all of a sudden, we had a ball game. The score was 16-9 almost instantaneously. A 7 point deficit during the 4th quarter of Cereal Bowl XLI. The Narrows defense, once again gave their scorching hot offensive unit the ball at their own 9 yard line with a little over 7:00 minutes left in the game. Phelps to MacAdoo for 8 yards. Phelps to MacAdoo for 11 yards. Phelps to Greene for 7 yards. Phelps to MacAdoo for 21 yards. Just 5 plays later, the Narrows faithful could see their team’s second MLF Championship manifesting before their very eyes. 3rd and 4 at the Bisons’ 9. Phelps eyes a blitz by Baltimore’s strong safety. He audibles into a shotgun formation, sends Pietila-Wiggs in motion, faking a WR reverse and threw an absolute bullet to the back of the endzone to MacAdoo. Touchdown. MacAdoo did his signature bow to the crowd as the Narrows sideline exploded as if a mine was set to set off at that very moment. Now, with the game tied 16-16, 4:31 left, and a Cereal Bowl Championship on the line, 2014 Offensive MVP Trey Summers had to score on what could be the final drive of the season. Summers showed no emotion as he calmly glided to the huddle to lead his team to a Cereal Bowl Title. Baltimore moved the ball effortlessly against the exhausted Narrows defense, and just 8 plays later, a Madison run set up Baltimore for possibly the winning score with under 2:30 left. Play action bootleg, Summers rolled to his right, and lofted a pass to Steven Smith one more time in the back of the Narrows endzone to recapture a 23-16 lead with 2:22 left in the game. One problem, they gave the Narrows too much time. After a sack, the two minute warning and an incompletion, it was 3rd and 16 at the Tacoma 14 yard line. Then, once again, Phelps found MacAdoo on a crossing route to give his team a 38 yard completion and yet another life in the teams 7th Cereal Bowl. After two more first down completions, 2 errant pass attempts, and yet another sack, it was fourth down. 11 seconds left at the Bisons 11 yard line. The Narrows called their final timeout to discuss the single play of the season. Phelps dropped and looked for his all-world wideout, who was smothered by three Bison defenders, stepped up in the pocket and fired a rifle to Nash Greene in the endzone as the entire country held it’s collective breath. The pass was batted away by Dave Harris Jr. in the endzone as time expired and purple, white, and lime green confetti flew into the cloudy night sky. With the temperatures below freezing, no Bison fan left FedEx Stadium to see the Bisons’ hoist the Clanky Cup for the first time in franchise history.
