magic in dungeon and dragons
dungeon and dragons is the first really instance of a game having a magic system and also one of the most influence magic system in games most likely because of that

in dungeons and dragons weather you can use magic is dependent on your class and a few other factors so classes like a wizard can use practically all spells and can do it very easily compared to say something like a barbarian who can not use any spells
spells in dungeon and dragons work very differently to how video games do it today due to the fact that it is mostly a board game were you can do anything you want so a lot of the spells in the game are sort of pacific like grease which makes floors greasy or sleep which puts something to sleep i really like this as the spells are a lot more fun and makes the player more adaptable to the situation
also the spells in d and d have to prepared before they can be casted such as saying a word of burning a candle or breaking special twigs which I think I really cool as the player has to plan ahead is has a cost to firing magic that isn't just using mana like a lot of games

what is magic
magic comes in a lot of forms and many people believe in different things but basically it is the belief that certain actions can miniplate nature and supernatural forces
looking at how a lot of games treat magic it appears to be the ability to manipulate your surrounding and people at the cost of something like mana usually this is to balance the magic with other parts of the game
in games magic is usually part of the side mechanics like a class in a game or a secondary attack like in fable personally i want to make it the focus of my game
I want to look at magic because I personally like the creativity that comes with it and all the stuff like wizard and all that so i want to adapt that passion into making a game

I wanted to look at this game to get ideas and inspiration to make my magic in my game and how I could implement it to the control scheme
the magic system in magika is fall of different variety of spells the game uses a system where it can generate spells based on a lot of different factors such as the element what tool it is being used by whether its a projectile or beam its cast time and a lot of other stuff i really like how this game uses magic although i do think that there could be some more spells that could do thing that you usually don't see happen in games such as making it rain eggs or something

initial research into magic
I want to make my game about magic and have that be a core part of my gameplay so I want to look how other games handle this

noita is a game that is all about combining different wands with different spells to create crazy and powerful combinations most of the spells in the game usually shoot a projectile that glows which is very common when it comes to video games and magic but noita does have a lot of strange and fun spells such as the spell that creates bomb or the one that turns people into frogs of the one that creates a buzz saw that bounces of the walls
I think that I could use some of the magic design into my game as I want the player to be able to cast spells and I would want the spells to do some strange things

magic games and icons
in many games they use small icons to show and convey what a spell can do at a glance so player can under stand what I does so I wasn't to look and find out how they are able to do this
I game that immediately comes to mind is dark and darker as it has lots of spell that do lots of things and you have to read them quickly as you are always changing between them

you can see roughly wat a spell might do in a glance due to how they design them such as spells that are diagonal or have a arrow in them are usually a projectile spell where thing that have a limp such as a foot or a fist are usually spells that buff yourself or allies they are also colour coded so that people can see what element they6 are at a glance and it also helps picking out spells
I think I could use this information when making my ui as player usually have no idea what a spell does from the name usually and it might be helpful to use some of the design philosophy to help convey information

I wanted to do a deeper dive on this game because I found its theming and art style to be fairly interesting as it is able to convey so much visually with an overwise very minimalistic and pixelated art style I do really like the look of the gnomes but I don't think that they would visually fit in my game without being visually adjusted and changed to fit my colour pallet

making my menu look good
I wanted to make my menu look good so that it is more visually appealing to look at
I first when into photo shop and remade the text for the title to look more fun and fit the visual style

making magic ui
I wanted to make icons that show you what spell you currently have as when I play tested the game many people where confused with what spell and I feel it would make it a lot easier to play
I first made some icons for my spells

I then exported them into unreal engine and made them into paper 2d sprites

I then made them all images on the Hud widget and placed them in the top right corner

I then made a piece of code that makes the icons only appear if that pacific spell is being used

this worked without any issues and makes it easier to know what spell your casting

adding my new enemy to my spawner
I want to add my cultist to the spawn code so that it will actually spawn and be a thing that the player actually sees
first I copied and pasted the code for the gnome to the end of the code and changed it to a cultist

I then made it so that when the horde strength gets to a certain point the cultist will start spawning to make the player not overwhelmed in the first few seconds

adding a new enemy to my game
I wanted to add a new enemy to add some variety to my game and make it less repetitive and more fun
I first made a child of my gnome enemy so that I don't have to remake the entire code and system for a new character

I then changed the health and walk speed for the new enemy called cultist

I then wanted to make a new sprite for the cultist so it stands out from the other enemy's so I booted up photoshop and made a 30x30 pixel canvas to make the sprite on

I first made a widget blueprint to be extras and then made it so when you click extra I switches to extra

when people where playtesting my game people didn't know what to do and where very confused on what the controls are and how you are meant to play the game
I first created a level to be my tutorial

making a main menu
I wanted a main menu for my game so when you load it up it doesn't just start and so the player can select what mode they want to do
I first started by making a level that'll be my main menu

adding a way to rapidly use cast without spam clicking
right now my right click doesn't do anything and people when playtesting didn't like having to click a lot to use some spells so I thought that I could make it so that when you hold right click it rapid fires
I made a IA_IMPUT for the rapid cast and then bound that to right click

making new spawn locations
I wanted new spawn locations so that the player doesn't just sit on one spawn and defeat the enemy's as they spawn
I started by making 3 new scene roots to be the other places the enemy's spawn
