Pitch Perfect
Personal brand statement:
My name is Maria, I hold two Advanced Diplomas: one in Business Administration Marketing, second in Hospitality and Tourism Administration. Currently, I’m pursing a Bachelor of Commerce Degree in Business Management, majoring in Marketing Management. I’m a meticulous and team-oriented individual with over 8 years of customer service experience. My passion is in designing and implementing effective marketing campaigns to support businesses generate sales. My goal is to find a career that will put my skills and assets to fruition as a marketing specialist.
Q: How did you develop your personal brand statement?
How I developed my personal brand statement, I simply thought of the idea as a synopsis of my background and experience; who I am, and what I do. I wanted to share my expertise and credentials in both a quick and effective manner that is short, concise, and importantly, memorable.
Q: What did you consider when you put it together?
When putting it together, I considered how I would want to introduce myself to hiring managers and company representatives. After all, this is my chance at introducing myself to potential networks in a notable way.
Additionally, there were a few things I needed to consider when putting my elevator pitch together:
My elevator speech should be brief
My speech needed to be persuasive
Share my skills and qualifications
Mention my goals and what I’m looking for in a job
Q: What steps did you take to create it?
1.  Say as little as possible.
Mention 1-2 things I want to emphasize about myself and my ambitions
Only mention information that are relevant to the situation
2.  Decide what kind of work I’m looking for.
Think about what my goals are
Mention my marketing background and work experience
3.  Identify my audience.
My pitch is only valuable if the person I’m speaking to understands it
4.  Think about the problems I solve rather than what I do.
Rather than saying I’m a Marketing student, mention the classes I’m taking, what I’ve learned, and the experiences I’ve had during projects

10 Tips for a More Effective Google Search
The Google search engine is an online tool used to access large amounts of information fast and efficiently. People tend to rely on Google to answer their questions from every day life. Users may want to search for the ingredients to a recipe, or they may want to find the directions to the nearest Starbucks. Although it is common for people to input words related to their search, they may or may not know that there are features that they can use to have faster and efficient searches. Here are some tips to help you achieve more accurate results:
1. How would you search for an exact word or phrase? When searching content for an exact word or phrase such as “Digital Marketing” for example, rather than typing in Digital Marketing into the Google search box, you should search explicitly for the phrase by enclosing the search phrase in quotations, “Digital Marketing”. By entering the phrase in quotation marks, this makes Google consider the phrase as a single entry and also narrows the search/pages to a more specific result.
2. How would you search for something on a specific site?
Simply use the site: modifier, this will restrict the results to a specific domain or website. However, to refine your search, you can always add more specific information into the search such as a date and/or year, i.e. site:www.ryerson.ca “digital marketing” 2016. Keep in mind that there should be no spaces in-between the operator and the website/domain.
3. How would you correctly search for a definition?
If you don’t know the meaning of a word, simply use the define: function, followed by the word, i.e. define:marketing.
4. How would you search for a specific product available within a specific price range?
By combining the dollar sign and period symbols, the user can produce the results for a particular product within a desired price range. For example, if we were looking for a television within the price range of $300 to $400 dollars, one should input television $300…$400.
5. How would you search for a specific filetype?
Another operator that can be used to filter specific results, is the filetype: operator, which can be done by inputting the filetype: operator next to the desired file type, plus the title (if available). For example if one were looking for PowerPoint presentations related to digital marketing, one would type filetype:ppt digital marketing, or if searching for pdf documents on digital marketing then, i.e. filetype:pdf digital marketing. This search can be used to download various forms of documents.
6. How would you include or ignore words in your search?
If you want to search for content on Digital Marketing, but want to include other terms to match the phrase, you can use the OR operator (Note: OR has to be capitalized). For example, digital marketing OR advertising. Additionally, if you want to ignore words, simply use the ‘–’ sign in front of the word you want to exclude in the search, i.e. digital marketing –advertising. Ultimately, this will restrict the results and allow for improved filtering.
7. How would you find sites/pages similar to an existing one?
Finding a new website, with similar content to a previously known website, requires the use of the related: operator. For example, to find similar webpages to digitalmarketing.com, you can search related:digitalmarketing.com.
8. How would you confirm the exact form of a quote even if you were missing some of the words?
This can be done by substituting the forgotten terms, with the asterisk symbol (*), i.e. Albert Einstein quoted, “Anyone who has * not * made a mistake has never tried anything new”.
9. How would you search for pages containing two connected words?
When searching for pages that contain a query and a connected term, using the operator intext: is useful. For example, to find information about successful small businesses in Canada, an individual could input “Successful small businesses” intext:Canada.
10. How would you search for social media content containing a specific tag?
By simply placing the hashtag symbol (#) next to the content you are looking for, will help you find the topic on social media. For example, by searching #torontoraptors, you will get search results for news/posts on the Toronto Raptors professional basketball team, on various platforms of social media.
Overall, by implementing these techniques in your next search, you will not only make it easier to find answers, but it will improve your searches by providing you with more accurate results. This is part of what makes Google.com, the user-friendly tool to help answer the questions of everyday life.

Social Media Best Practice
Today there are various social media platforms businesses and individuals can use to either promote themselves, or their business. With the infinite amount of social media applications right at our fingertips, does not mean we should utilize them all. Promoting oneself through multiple social media marketing campaigns may not always generate a positive outcome. As mentioned under Refining your Digital Expectations, “many individuals and organizations are still under the mistaken impression that “if you build it [on social media], they will come”. As a result, some social media best practices for starting a social media page for either yourself or for your business include the following:
Set Measurable Goals for Each Social Media Network
Set realistic and measurable objectives for your social media network. This will allow you to prioritize effective strategies for a positive outcome.
Check out the Competition
See how your competition manages their social media channels, the type of content they post and whether or not they are generating consumer interaction.
Choose the Best Social Media Platforms for Your Business
Managing various social networks can be a handful which would negatively affect your other channels. Concentrating on fewer networks will allow for time to generate better consumer content.
Brand Each of Your Social Media Pages
It is important that your consumers recognize your brand. This can be done through the use of logos, taglines, specific words, etc.
Prioritize Quality Over Quantity
With reference again to Refining your Digital Expectations, “A good social media plan takes time and money. If one of your goals is to promote yourself, or a product or service you represent, whatever social media tool or platform(s) you choose will require at least 6-10 hours a week of you engaging with your audience.”.
