What Is Missing From This Argument Is The Fact That Aversive Methods Only Work If They Scare And/or Hurt The Dog.
The Delta Smart is a small, smartphone-compatible gadget that fits over a dogs collar, enabling an owner, through an app, to keep track of their dogs activity levels, and how much barking they are doing while were away. Its not the first Garmin product for dogs, and notthefirst to include a shock feature but it is the first to spark such widespread protest and an online petition asking the company to remove the feature. The product promises to reduce or eliminate unwanted behaviors and make your dog a more enjoyable member of the family. It gives dogs warnings by beeping, vibrating or by applying what the company likes to call static or stimulation which is a nice way of saying a jolt of electricity. There are 10 levels at which a dog can be zapped, either by an owner who is present, or remotely. As the petition points out, its not the right way to train a dog: For example, a woman wants her dog Bowser to learn to not jump on the couch. Bowser trots into the family room, jumps up on the couch, and climbs into her daughters lap at which point the electric shock hits him. She has now put her child in serious danger. Bowser will not associate the act of jumping up on the couch with the pain; he will associate her child with the pain and could very well become aggressive toward her. Like all the makers of shock collars, Garmin says the jolt does not hurt the dog. What is missing from this argument is the fact that aversive methods only work if they scare and/or hurt the dog. If the zap doesnt bother the dog, then the dog will not learn. Electric shock collars do hurt and scare dogs. If they didnt, no one would use them, says the author of the petition, dog trainer and freelance writer Tracy Krulik. Garmins Bark Limiter We havent seen the CEO of the company try one out (but then again maybe he or she hasnt misbehaved). To the companys credit the new device has put some cushioning over the two metal probes that, in earlier versions, stuck into the dogs neck. The Delta Smart is basically a combination of a FitBit-like device and the companys Bark Limiter, which has been on the market for a while. In the ad above, various dogs are shown, each labeled for the kind of bad behavior they engaged in barking too much at the mailman, shredding the blinds, stealing food off the kitchen counter, knocking over the trash can, chewing up the slippers. The dog activity trainer and remote monitor can correct all those problems even when youre not home, the ad says. It can monitor barking and activity levels while youre away, and it comes with tags that can be placed on items and in areas you dont want the dog near that activate warning tones when the dog approaches. In other words, it is a control freaks dream and its only $150. After the video was posted on Facebook, it had nearly 2,800 comments, most of them condemning the product as cruel, and the wrong way to train a dog, according to the Washington Post On YouTube, the company has disabled public comments on the video and if you try to leave one, you receive an electrical shock. (OK, we made that last part up.) Youve got to wonder, though, technology being what it is, if the day will come when we get shocked for making wrong turns or for not taking enough steps during the day, for failing to do our sit ups or eat our vegetables and if someday,by a family vote, we can equip a bratty nephew or an annoying uncle with such a device. For his own good, of course, and just to make him a more enjoyable member of the family.

In Seven Years They Have Gone From Converting 3.8% Of The Light That Falls On Them Into Electricity, To More Than 20% .
Currently being developed by researchers and a small number of companies, the new film materials offer the potential of lighter and cheaper manufacturing. With big names including Panasonic, Fujifilm , Statoil ASA and Legal & General Capital now investing in the technology, energy experts expect the first panels to be on sale within five to 10 years. This field is moving so rapidly that Im sure in a few years you will start seeing products you can actually hold in your hand, says Dr Jao van de Lagemaat from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory in Golden, Colorado. The most promising of the new film technologies is perovskite cells , named after the 19th century Russian mineralogist Lev Perovski. Unlike silicon-based photovoltaic (PV) cells, perovskite cells are soluble in a variety of solvents so can be easily sprayed on to a surface, similar to inks or paints. That potentially makes the cells much cheaper to manufacture and means that the light-gathering film can be attached to flexible materials, opening up a range of new applications. Pinterest Solutions of all-inorganic perovskite quantum dots, showing photoluminescence when illuminated with UV light. Photograph: Dennis Schroeder/NREL You could, in a factory, print these solar cells using a similar process as is used for printing newspapers, says Van de Lagemaat. Your solar panels would come out as a roll at the end. What has really got people excited about perovskites though is the rapid increase in efficiency that materials scientists have achieved with them in the lab. In seven years they have gone from converting 3.8% of the light that falls on them into electricity, to more than 20% . That figure might not sound hugely impressive but consider that traditional silicon-based cells, with their decades of research behind them, only achieve 24% or 25% efficiency in the lab and around 18% in real-world applications. The theoretical maximum is around 33% energy conversion. Although recently touting it as a gamechanger for the solar market, Prof Yang Yang at the department of materials science and engineering at the University of California, Los Angeles remains cautious: We have to face reality. To put them on the rooftop and the power plant requires a significant improvement in the material. One problem is connected with the materials inherent advantage their solubility. That, combined with heat sensitivity, means the cells are not as stable as silicon PV. Instead of lasting for 25 years or more they degrade over a period of months or a few years. That might not matter for short-lived disposable products such as cellphones, but would exclude the technology from the large-scale solar farm market, for example. Researchers are working to improve the materials inherent stability or come up with coatings that would encapsulate the perovskite, but that may add cost. Another issue is disposal.

The Investigation Is Still Ongoing And Wachtel Said The Extent Of The Damage At The Two Apartment Complexes Is Still Being Evaluated.
Officers responded to an apartment complex in the 4600 block of Charleston Road at 10:30 p.m. after receiving a report of a white man breaking windows at multiple apartments. Again, that man was identified as Christopher, Wachtel said. Officers heard windows break and found evidence of a home invasion at the ground floor window. They could see that Christopher had broken into a two-story apartment and was holding a male resident hostage at the bedroom window the SVPD Tactical Team was activated to respond, Wachtel said. After a brief protest, Christopher complied with the officers orders and was taken into custody without further incident. The investigation is still ongoing and Wachtel said the extent of the damage at the two apartment complexes is still being evaluated. Christopher was arrested on charges of kidnapping, first-degree burglary, and aggravated assault. He has since been released from police custody. Suicide attempt ends in arrest An early Sunday morning standoff finished with an arrest of a Huachuca City man. An SVPD officer made contact with a 30-year-old man riding a bicycle without a headlamp at about 11:35 p.m. on Saturday, April 22, in the area of 7th Street and Denman Avenue. When the officer attempted to speak to him, the suspect allegedly rode into the officers marked patrol vehicle and walked away. While the officer was giving commands to stop, the suspect, according to police reports, ignored him, pulled out a revolver and told the officer to leave him alone. The man identified as Craig Ethridge then pointed the gun at his own head and said he didnt want to hurt anybody. Ethridge continued to ignore the officers commands and ran westbound, leading multiple officers who arrived on scene in a foot pursuit, Wachtel said. The pursuit ended in the east parking lot of Westwood Village Apartments, located at 201 N. Garden Avenue. Ethridge was found behind a commercial dumpster while continuing to hold the gun to his head. The scene was contained for several hours with the assistance of deputies from the Cochise County Sheriffs Office and the SVPD Special Response Team. Ethridge was taken into custody without further incident. The patrol officers, deputies, and tactical officers responded quickly and brought this incident to a peaceful resolution, said Sierra Vista Deputy Police Chief Jon Kosmider, who was as at the scene.

She Loved Gardening And Dancing, According To Her Obituary, Along With Photography, Painting And Pottery.
She is accused of purchasing and giving Yoder a single deadly dose of colchicine, a medication often used to treat gout. Over a 10-month period, Conley planned the murder, the Oneida County district attorney's office has said. Conley graduated from the State University of New York Polytechnic Institute in Utica in May 2016. She was a business administration major, making the dean's list at least one semester. She also was a student at Mohawk Valley Community College in 2012 and 2013. The victim Mary Louise Yoder, 60, died July 22, 2015. Conley wasn't charged in her death until 11 months later in June 2016. Yoder and her husband, William Yoder, owned and operated Chiropractic Family Care for 28 years. They were well-known in the community, and were avid churchgoers. She loved gardening and dancing, according to her obituary, along with photography, painting and pottery. Mary YoderProvided photo Mary Louise Yoder was born in Buffalo, and earned her doctorate in chiropractic medicine from Life Chiropractic College in 1986. The case Mary Louise Yoder's death in July 2015 wasn't originally deemed a murder. Police have said a family member contacted the sheriff's office in October 2015 because they believed the death was suspicious, and in December 2015 Yoder's death was ruled a homicide. Conley was charged in June 2016. The Oneida County District Attorney's office said during a court hearing in June that Conley tried to frame Adam Yoder , the victim's son and her on-again, off-again boyfriend. At the time of Yoder's death, police said they were friends and not in a romantic relationship. Conley was close enough to the family that she was listed among the survivors and loved ones in Mary Louise Yoder's obituary. The drug Colchicine is found in its natural form in a flower known as the "autumn crocus." It is a toxic product that is used to treat gout in controlled and precisely dosed amounts, according to web sites of companies that sell the drug. The drug can be purchased online: 250 mg costs $80.50. A much smaller dose can be lethal. Police said Conley obtained a research-grade or purer form of the drug.

All I Can Say Is, Theres No Right Answer, She Remarked.
(Photo: STX) More Life imitated art when The Circle star Emma Watson walked the red carpet at the movies Tribeca Film Festival premiere facing the glowing lights of smartphone cameras. In James Ponsoldts new drama, adapted from the 2013 novel by Dave Eggers, the Beauty and the Beast star plays Mae Holland, an employee at the titular tech-world behemoth who agrees to live her entire life on camera a status her corporate overseers, including Circle co-founder Eamon Bailey (Tom Hanks), label as going transparent. Its a decision that carries a heavy personal cost, including the loss of friends and family as well as her own privacy. One could say that Watson has been living a transparent life albeit with less tragic consequences since age 10, when she embarked on a decade-long odyssey playing Hermione Granger in the eight-filmHarry Potter franchise. Speaking at a post-screening Q&A for The Circle, the now-27 year old actress remarked on the connection between the film and her real life. It was a very vulnerable experience for me, this movie. It went to the bone of an experience where you have to look out from a stage, and there are things going on behind the scenes that nobody knows about. You just have to turn on and be this thing. Getting to play Mae and put that [experience] onscreen was very hard for me, and Im so grateful to James for giving me to opportunity to live that. View photos Emma Watson at Tribeca on Wednesday evening. (Photo: Taylor Hill/Getty Images) More Watson went on to add that shes become more mindful of her online presence which includes a Twitter account with nearly 25 million followers, and an Instagram that reaches 33.1 million people since making The Circle, which opens in theaters on April 28. Further encouraging her to take a step back is the recent decision by Congress to roll back Internet privacy regulations put in place by the previous administration. All I can say is, theres no right answer, she remarked. Trust me I have grilled Dave Eggers! For me, its about taking back the information that belongs to us and to me. I didnt think about most of this stuff before I read Daves book. While the Circle isnt a real Silicon Valley conglomerate, Ponsoldt told the audience that the production team spent time at some actual tech companies for background research. We visited a bunch of campuses to get sense of portraying this world and recognizing whats positive [about it]. We all know the products, obviously, but wanted to spend time with the people there. And, much like his star, the director of such acclaimed dramas as The Spectacular Now and The End of the Tour, has been thinking a lot about his digital life in the wake of researching and making The Circle. When I read it, my wife was pregnant with our first child, and we began to talk about the freedoms our children would have and how intentionally wed be documenting their childhood or not. Good thing that Ponsoldt knows an actress who can provide him with plenty of advice about the benefits and risks of growing up on camera. Watch the trailer:

Built by the Weaver Brothers, The Plaza Theatre opened on Christmas Day 1919 to much fanfare during the silent era of film. (Movies were not produced with sound until 1927.) The cost of seeing a movie in 1919 was a mere 22 cents compared to today's average movie ticket price of $8.65, according to Box Office Mojo. Exterior historical photo of the Plaza Theatre, undated. The Afl Team Uses A Splicer Equipped With Two Video Cameras And A Pattern Matching Algorithm To Roughly Match The Cores.
Author: Klint Finley. Klint Finley Business Date of Publication: 03.13.13. Time of Publication: 2:50 pm. 2:50 pm Image: Flickr/ kainet Even as U.S. telcos drag their feet and make excuses for not rolling out high-speed fiber-optical connections, researchers are pushing fiber technology forward, breaking records in speed, distance, and efficiency. Next week, at the Optical Fiber Communication Conference and Exposition/National Fiber Optic Engineers Conference (OFC/NFOEC) in Anaheim, California, scientists will gather to discuss their latest breakthroughs. This includes everything from a new breed of fiber-optic cable to new low-power techniques for using fiber inside supercomputers, but the headliner comes from AT&T Labs-Research. AT&T scientists have developed new techniques capable of transmitting data at 400 Gbs across about 7,500 miles of fiber. Thats roughly 400 times the speed of Google Fiber the much-ballyhooed fiber network the search giant operates in Kansas City and it doesnt require new infrastructure. AT&T researchers served its speed record over existing 100 Gbs networks. To do this, the researchers lead by Xiang Zhou at AT&T Labs-Research created a new modulation technique that enables them to use the available spectrum more efficiently. Zhou says that although researchers have been able to transmit at 12,000 km using slower connections ; this is a new distance record for this speed and efficiency. The breakthrough should be a boon for those depending on long-distance fiber-optic connections such as undersea lines. While AT&T works on optimizing transmissions, a group of researchers at the fiber optics equipment manufacturer AFL have developed a way to make faster fiber optic infrastructure more practical. Fiber cables can be bundled together into multicore fibers. Up to 19 fibers can be bundled together, resulting in 19 times as much signal carrying capacity. But splicing these fibers is a pain. The researchers compare it to trying to to take a two bundles of try spaghetti and trying to perfectly align each and every noodle from both bunches. Up til now, this could only be done manually, and the lack of an automated splicing process has prevented the spread of multicore fibers into real-world applications. The AFL team uses a splicer equipped with two video cameras and a pattern matching algorithm to roughly match the cores. Then the device uses a power-feedback method and image processing techniques to more finely align the cores before heat splicing them. If the multicore fibers are manufactured with a standard design, this automatic splicing should make it possible for telecommunications companies to adopt these much more efficient fiber optic cables. Meanwhile, a team of DARPA-funded IBM researchers are using fiber optics for a different purpose: transmitting large amounts of data within a supercomputer. These researchers have found a way to double the speed of transmission while cutting the energy required in half. Unlike the AT&T researchers, the IBM/DARPA scientists are working over very short distances. The research will help next generation supercomputers operate faster and use less electricity.

Written By Her Husband, Joe.
Sally and Joe, we discover over the course of the evening, have had a rough year together; or more accurately, theyve had a rough year being apart as their marriage has been strained. Joe has been working out of London, Sally prefers her home in Los Angeles. As an actress, shes aging and less desirable for casting, even when the movie she wants to star in is based on a book inspired by her life. Written by her husband, Joe. Directed by her husband, Joe. Joe, who doesnt even like movies that much, even though her film career has enabled his expensive trans-Atlantic lifestyle and paid for their Runyon Canyon-adjacent, mid-century modern home atop of the Hollywood Hills. A coffee table picture book of a house in which only the most fabulous of parties are held and only the most fabulous of friends should be invited. (All the better to impress the little people who happen to live next door into submission over their complaints about a noisy Otis. Fabulous people dont complain about dogs barking at 4 A.M. and who wouldnt want to be fabulous enough to attend their party?) And what a party it shall be, what with guests like Kevin Kline, Phoebe Cates (who came out of retirement for the film at the behest of her best friend Leigh), Jane Adams, John C. Reilly, John Benjamin Hickey, Parker Posey, Jennifer Beals, Denis O'Hare, Mina Badie and Gwyneth Paltrow among others. With the exception of Posey who was a last-minute replacement, Leigh and Cummingwrote each character for The Anniversary Party with their real-life friends in mind, creating characters who are not exactly their pals, but could possibly be the person just to the left or right of them on any scale. If anything, it is seeing their worldview through the friends they cast that feels raw, even more voyeuristic than the subject matter itself; a couple celebrating their love surrounded by the people closest to them who know it might be too soon to pop the cork on their unending happiness. There is always an element of having to feel safe on a set, between actors and the material, and directors trusting their performers enough deliver what film needs, a relationship that has tried and destroyed many a Hollywood relationship. Watching The Anniversary Party it is hard not to feel the warmth Leigh and Cummingfeel for each one of their actors and the respect and faith they receive in turn from their cast. (In a somewhat meta moment, John C. Reilly, playing director Mac Forsyth, is discovered by Sally watching dailies of his current movie in which she happens to star in a back room shaking his head in worried disbelief at how poor her performance is in the film and how his career is going to be over if the movie flops.) Its the trust established by actors-turned-directors working with actors that helps make The Anniversary Party feel just as intimate as the setting, and when paired with the early use of digital to pull in as tight as possible when quite literally and figuratively someone is in the closet, the viewer almost feels dirty seeing the ugliness hiding in some quarters, much like a party guest who opens a medicine cabinet only to discover a truth about a friend they did not want to know. It is because of this, just as it is hard to unravel the bits that are Leigh and the bits that are Cumming, it is also impossible to separate the film from being one of the first digital success stories without acknowledging how poorly digital filmmaking was regarded at the time. (And it is a film; the great John Bailey who was behind the lens for The Accidental Tourist, Ordinary Peopledid not shoot a wedding tape, nor did his wife, esteemed editor Carol Littleton, put together a movie that was any less cinematic despite the Avid use.) It is a shame when you go back and revisit reviews and interviews from 2001, the nearly apologetic tone in which JJL and Cummingtalk about using DV and the reviews that focused on where they felt DV had supposedly faltered or was distracting without fully embracing the story and the acting, because as a viewer in 2017 those issues are so incredibly minor you barely notice them, your modern eye is willing to smooth over the difference and allowthe movie to exist on its own merits. Combined together working with their friends, deftly shooting on video you can see the direct linage back to Leighs original inspiration, the early Dogme films of the 1990s. Leigh herself sung the praises of the first Dogme film, The Celebration, and would later star in the fourth Dogme film, 2000s The King Is Alive. Attracted to the idea that making a movie didnt have to be an overblown affair, one could work digitally and save yourself hours of setup (not to mention millions of dollars off the budget), Leigh, coming off a bad breakup and a Broadway revival of Cabaret, suggested to her stage co-star Cummingthey make a movie together, keeping the intimacy of the digital part of Dogme and working with friends on reasonably paced days as not to make everyone crazy. In 2001 making a small budget indie for a mere few million bucks in less than three weeks felt revolutionary. Even the short shooting time was lambasted by Craig Kilborn for only being 19 days because such brevity in production was looked down upon as unworthy and worse, untrustworthy. And they went for it, selling the pitch to Fine Line, and spending the next year writing and storyboarding knowing they needed to go into production as prepared as they possibly could be with such a limited amount of time and coverage, discovering what would work for not only their movie but allowtheir friends to shine. Leigh herself was involved for the entirety of the editing process, making sure the movie she and Cummingbirthed together got as much room to breathe as possible, purposely lingering over moments too long as to make viewers feel as if theyre as uncomfortable as everyone in scenes. The effort more than paid off. Jane Adams as Clair Forsyth, Macs actress wife who is starving herself back to pre-pregnancy weight and completely out of her mind with worry over both her child and her career, is a frenetic delight and you find yourself watching even the most subtle things she is doing in the background as she brings such a joy and lightness to every shot she is in. You genuinely miss seeing Cates on the screen, especially as the night wears on and her character Sophia Gold lets her guard down enough to have nothing but the most brutally honest conversation about not only what she thinks her best friend Sally should do but admitting to the failures in her own perfect life. John C. Reillys Mac is identifiable with anyone who has had to deal with professional jealousy, as well as his characters inability to show any sort of weakness, even in front of his friends. While much of the story isnt exactly new or groundbreaking, nor is the mechanism for truth (everyone gets high) original, the trials and tribulations feel timeless enough that The Anniversary Party could be happening in Los Angeles at this very moment, but instead of Gwyneth Paltrow being the young ingenue honored to be playing the role of her favorite living actress, she would be the one looking across the room reminding everyone shes still the it girl of the moment who could easily play 28 no wait, 25. Make no mistake, Leighs Sally is a fighter throughout the movie, and is every woman over age 35 still proving her worth, even when shes unconsciously trying to please everyone. This is especially true as the night grows long and she is forced to remind everyone this is her house, her rules and her marriage; no one else can lay claim to intimacy that only she and Joe share, the type of confidence that only comes with age, the confidence an ingenue shrinks away from. Ultimately The Anniversary Party should be considered just as vital to Leighs career as Fast Times at Ridgemont High, Single White Female, Georgia, Miami Blues or The Hateful Eight as it offers a complete expression of her as an artist. While we cant completely untangle the film from being a joint production, there are enough beats you can see as being uniquely Leigh throughout the movie and moments one can tell Cummingis bringing out the best in her, and vice versa.

Kuniskis Says, That Comes Up A Lot, And What I Tell People All The Time Is That Our Dealers Are Our Partners...
Climb in the driver's seat for the latest in reviews, advice and picks by our editors. Sign Up Dodge Challenger SRT Demon pricing: When will it be available? Plus answers to questions like: "Will it be available overseas?" and "How will Dodge avoid dealer gouging?" FCA US LLC @cpautoscribe Dodge may have stunned the automotive world with all the facts and figures related to its new Challenger SRT Demon , but there's a big mystery number that will be key to its marketplace performance: Price. At the street/strip star's Tuesday night unveil, there was no mention of cost of entry, and officials have remained mum on pricing throughout the New York Auto Show's press days . And while we still have no idea what the Demon will cost, we do have a good idea of when we'll know more, as well as how and where you'll be able to buy it. In my Wednesday interview with Tim Kuniskis, Dodge's head of passenger car brands, shed some light on when the company will divulge the car's asking price: "I think probably in about two months. Our goal is by June to have the distribution system out -- how we're going to allocate the vehicles to the dealers, and the pricing, all at the same time." We should learn Challenger SRT Demon pricing and availability details in June. Dodge Just 3,300 units are planned for the Demon's one-year production run, with 3,000 units coming to the US and 300 earmarked for Canada. As such, there's likely to be a long line of reservations for a relatively small amount of vehicles at Dodge/SRT dealers. That said, unlike many other specialty or high-end models that are only available through participating certified dealerships, the automaker has no plans to limit where the car is available. "It's a Dodge vehicle, it's eligible for sale at a Dodge dealership. There won't be any sort of special program or anything like that," said Kuniskis. Kuniskis notes Dodge has no plans to sell the Demon anywhere outside of US and Canada. "We don't have it certified for any of those markets," he said. That makes sense, given that drag racing -- this car's raison d'etre -- is primarily an American pastime. That said, the Demon's overwhelming response in the global news cycle may have taken Fiat-Chrysler aback, and I told Kuniskis it wouldn't surprise me to hear that there's interest in the Middle East or UK for this car. Kuniskis laughed, and then relayed a story to me about how a Frenchman came up to him earlier in the day and told him, "'The people in France don't know anything about Dodge, they're not familiar with anything about the Dodge brand. Except this Demon is all over the news in France.'" He paused a moment before saying, "That's really interesting. So I don't know, we may have some people asking." He then went on to note that there were indeed viewing parties for the Demon's online unveil all over the world, including in Europe and the Middle East. The original buyer's name is engraved on both the Demon Crate and the car's air vent. Dodge And what about the possibility of dealership price gouging? Kuniskis says, "That comes up a lot, and what I tell people all the time is that our dealers are our partners... they are phenomenal business partners with us. I have no control over the franchise agreements, and that's why there's a Manufacturer Suggested Retail Price [MSRP]. We spend a lot of time -- and for a good reason -- talking about this tenth of a percent of the cars that get marked up over sticker, and we never talk about the 99-point-9 percent that they sell under sticker, and nobody seems to complain about that. So, it's going to be what the market demand is." That's not to say Dodge won't try to keep dealers from jacking up Demon prices. Kuniskis: "Now, we have some things in place that probably make that a little more difficult. Every car is serialized. Every car has the customer's name on the [optional Demon] Box and on the air vent. Pure speculators that are willing to pay significantly over MSRP, they're of course going to want their name on their box and on their dash. So if a dealer were to order that vehicle in advance with a generic name, we're not going to allow them to change the plate on the box or on the air vent at a later date. Whatever they put on there, they put on there. So if they order a generic [plate] as an 'XYZ Name' on the dash, and a customer comes in and says 'I'm willing to pay X number of thousands of dollars over," and says, 'Give me a replacement plate,' [it's] not available." 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is the most powerful muscle car ever As for ballparking what Dodge will actually ask for the Demon, Kuniskis remains coy. For reference, today's 707-horsepower 2017 Challenger SRT Hellcat starts at $64,195, and last I checked, the company's not-street-legal Challenger Drag Pak competition car starts at around $100,000 for the naturally aspirated 426 Hemi model. My best guess is that pricing will fall somewhere between those numbers. Having said that, if you're seriously interested in putting a Demon in your driveway, it's probably best to ring your local dealer now and be prepared to write a fat deposit check.

Stored This Way, Cookies Will Last About 1 Month.
Slowly increase to medium speed, then pause to scrape bowl and beater with a flexible spatula and resume mixing until creamy and smooth. (When the butter is too cold, the filling may seem stiff or thick, so take care to start with soft butter.) Transfer to a disposable pastry bag and snip the end to create a 1/4-inch opening. 4. To Assemble the Cookies: Flip half of cookies upside down and pipe on approximately 1/4 ounce filling (no need to measure; this can be done by eye). Once half the cookies have been "filled," any excess filling can be redistributed as needed. Top with remaining cookies and transfer finished sandwich cookies to an airtight container. 5. Refrigerate cookies 15 minutes to harden filling. If temperatures in your kitchen routinely climb above 70F (21C), the cookies are best stored in the fridge; bring a few to room temperature as needed to serve. Stored this way, cookies will last about 1 month.

Cake Balls, The Moist, Round, Candy-coated Cakes, Quickly Turned Into A Big Seller.
"We really became a lunch place," said Danae Morrow. "When its lunchtime in here, everyone's laughing, everyone knows each other." The idea to open a cafe came during a family vacation (Allen Morrow and Justine Schooley are cousins). Both Danae and Adam were going crazy at their jobs - Danae worked in sales and Adam was a retail store manager - and realized they needed a change. "We decided to stick our neck out there," Danae said. They aimed to create a coffee shop with baked goods and a limited lunch menu. However, the demand for their sandwiches and soups prompted them to expand their lunch menu to about four times its original size. The cafe will be open one year in May. "We have grown so much. Some days, we are so slammed there's not a table available," Danae said. Formulating the various recipes for the cafe's baked goods, including their popular cake balls, is the domain of owner Justine Schooley. The baker, who calls herself the inventor, said coming up with the perfect combination is mostly trial and error. "We just make stuff up, and taste it, and then look at each other," she said. Cake balls, the moist, round, candy-coated cakes, quickly turned into a big seller. They came up with the concoctions as an alternative to cupcakes, something they were tired of making, Danae said. Flavors range from fruity watermelon and blueberry to sweet chocolate-strawberry cheesecake and cinnamon bun. Justine said she wants to experiment with more flavors, like a chocolate-covered pretzel cake ball. "They have been the biggest craze," Danae said. "We have so many different flavors, it's actually hard to choose." The Morrows and Schooleys also believe in supporting local vendors. They use a Pittston-based coffee roaster and local food suppliers. They also push for fresh, non-processed ingredients whenever possible, like in their turkey club panini. "We use real roasted turkey. We don't use lunch meat," Danae said. Some sandwiches received their name from loyal customers, like the "Billi Berleu," a gourmet chicken salad, or "The Louie," made with ham, pepperoni, salami, provolone and roasted red pepper aioli. Danae said she also culls some soup recipes from her mother, who's an excellent cook.

The Standard Combines Rye Whiskey, Oolong Tea, Raspberry, Lemon, Sage, And Soda In A Giant Glass Spigot Jar.
There are two bars, one of which is decorated with books and portraits in the gentlemans-club style, only these pictures are of JFK (a former Locke-Ober devotee) in tats and Bill Murray as the model of a modern major general in full military regalia. Beverage manager Will Thompson has designed an equally irreverent bar menu, a something-for-everyone tour that peaks, in my opinion, with four large-format punches. The Standard combines rye whiskey, oolong tea, raspberry, lemon, sage, and soda in a giant glass spigot jar. Its as fun as a Scorpion Bowl: herbal, fruity, refreshing, and made for sharing. Tea and whiskey give a nod to local history, and the over-the-top garnishescoconuts, edible orchids, and pineapple crownsmake drinking a glass feel like a party unto itself. Yvonne's The Classic Jumbo With Bacon at Bagelsaurus [Photograph: Chris Anderson] Step up to the menu at this tiny Cambridge bakery, and, before you faint from the sticker shock ($25 for a bakers dozen of bagels!?), let me share a little anecdote: A friend was recently in town from New York. Shes a successful food writer who lives on the Upper West Side, knows Jewish food like she knows her right hand, and happened to be staying around the corner from the bakery. I held my breath as she formulated her verdict. "These are," she said, "the best bagels Ive had in my life." Owner Mary Ting Hyatt developed her recipes and her business slowly, starting with a weekly pop-up shop at Cuttys, a superb sandwich shop in Brookline (it wouldve made this list had I been allowed an 11th spot), and establishing a rabid fan base before opening her own store. Her bagels take a full 24 hours to make, beginning with a decades-old sourdough starter and slowly fermenting before being boiled and baked into the chewy and shatteringly crisp wonders that they are.
