(I am enjoying this drama but both the protagonists are VILE in a way I haven't seen in a proper cdrama in at least a decade. Like The King's War or Three Kingdoms 2010? The Advisors Alliance? Sure. But in a recent? idol? proper length? romance? HOLY FUCK)

One of the things I'm enjoying about the romance between Fu Yun Xi and Zhuang Han Yan is that their experience is very apparent in how their feelings are progressing.

Yun Xi has approached Han Yan with a purpose. His next marriage must happen soon, and it must be a contract since he's on borrowed time. He's got adult shit to do, and romance is for children. His face always looks a bit startled and uncomfortable every time there is genuine romantic tension between them. He's starting to like her against his will.

But Han Yan, while similarly scheming, selfish, and goal oriented, is still just a 17 year old girl. She's never experienced being courted by someone with (presumably) romantic intention. Her smiles after they have their moments are the giddiness you feel when you think someone you're interested in might like you too. The possibility of their interest only intensifies your own. She's experiencing romance for the first time, and it's why she's disappointed when Yun Xi offers her exactly what she said she wanted.

Just watched The Glory episode 10 and I need to stare at the ceiling for a little while.

I was already so happy to get f/f fealty and a slightly feral weapon-in-the-hand character, and then? You give me "tortured in your stead?" You give me "up all night waiting for her to come at my signal and the dawning horror of realizing where she is?" You give me "I'll sell myself to you if you only promise to save her?" You give me "now I'll be the one to protect you?"

He asks her what family means to her, and when he doesn't see an opening for himself to be that to her, he still helps her. I'm feral over them. Insane. Crazy.

Her conversation with Chai Jing finally gives him the answer he wants, which is blood =/= family. He's going to win her trust, and marry her, and they're going to burn the world down together. I can't wait for their married era.

Chen Duling and her lesbian aura

watching currently airing cdrama the glory 雁回时 starring chen duling right now and i actually don't give a fuck about any romance in this show aside from the insane lesbianisms of protagonist zhuang hanyan and her devoted repressedly obsessive female assassin bodyguard chai jing, who has already 1) offered to kill zhuang hanyan's future husband, 2) tried to kill zhuang hanyan's future husband, and 3) set fire to his house. amazing and normal behavior over a woman you keep making huge tender puppy eyes at, whom you got distressed over when you thought she was considering getting married to someone. thank you chai jing

YES! I love their dynamic the most so far.

I guess I am in the minority when I say that I do not hate the mom and love this complicated dynamic between Hanyan and her mom. The mom's character was not in the novel (she had long kicked the bucket) just as how the entire story of the drama (so far) was not in the novel. I am all for cutting off toxic family members and living your best life but Hanyan's main goal is to have two things she longed for all her life— her mother and her home and since she has seen and understood that her mother's cruel words/actions towards her come from a place of despair and wanting Hanyan to not fall further into the hellhole that is Zhuang family, she is not about to leave her mom alone to deal with the Zhuang freaks for 20 years more. Does the mom's pain and all her harsh treatment of Hanyan just to get Hanyan away from the family excuse her actions/words? Absolutely not. But the mom's pain resonates with Hanyan; she knows that while she was suffering in Danzhou, her mom was also living a life of mental torture (details not disclosed yet) and while her mom may not have been in Danzhou to give her a hand when she was drowning, Hanyan is in the Capital to give a life-saving hand to her drowning mother.

Might be an unpopular opinion, but I didn't care that much for Pearl and ZM. Sure, as a backstory, it's well done. We now understood more about the world and the lore in the drama. We got motive for ZM as the "fallen" hero. We finally pieces all the clue together. But, I feel like we didn't need to see them as a couple for that long to understand all the message. The whole time, I was thinking "When is this gonna end? Fine, I got it. Just go back to the present already."

The main reason I find this couple boring is because it's been done sooooo many times. The born-sexy-yesterday girl and cold-righteous-mature man. (It's problematic and icky, but that's for another post.) As a backstory couple in a past life adding more depth to the main characters is fine, but as a story of its own, it's very boring.

I watch this drama mainly because the fl is interesting. She's fierce, knows what she wants and seems to have her own agenda in the beginning which I love. As MXL, not Pearl. Her character and personality are refreshing amongst Xianxia drama FLs. As for XXC, I don't like him more than any other ml, but I don't hate him either. The point is, it's the main couple relationship that I wanted to see. After all they been through, I wanted to see them together and happy doing couple stuffs. Not Pearl and ZM's.

In conclusion, they should cut some Pearl&ZM episodes and give us more happy ending scenes with MXL&XXC.

the 'big surprise' cdrama for me in 2023 that clearly didn't hit for anyone else but strangely I was all about it: Love You Seven Times

tbh 80% of the times I enjoy myself a xanxia but by the end I don't ship it. The couples torment each other too much and I emotionally disinvest. I started out already prepared to not care too much about the Love You Seven Times relationship, before one of them starts stabbing the other in the heart while marrying someone else. And then these bastards kept... not doing that? They sucked me in!

When we are introduced to the 2 leads, they seem like your prototypical xanxia main characters. She's a super young cloud spirit. He's a jaded, cold & arrogant god of war who is impatient and derisive towards her hapless accidents & naivete.

But what's eventually revealed is that you aren't seeing the beginning of their story. These are actually the second incarnations of the essential characters - an immortal couple who are absolutely ride & die for each other, come hell or high water - and who cannot be kept apart or made to betray each other, no matter what tribulation they transmigrate into or how their memories are restricted.

We get:

* their original rom com to tragedy story, where they are wronged by the villian but never wrong each other

* a god arc [the story's bookend] where they are both missing their memories but come together again

(reborn as baby animals 🐯)

* mortal arc where she is transmigrated into a story and he is trapped in-character

* mortal arc where he transmigrated into a story and she is trapped in-character

* body swap mortal arc where they are both aware transmigrators

* demon realm arc where they are deep undercover and lie to each other while trusting implicitly

* a secret 8th thing, cause their love never dies

Usually the 'love trial'  arcs get a heavy fast forward from me. But here you have to invest or not watch at all. And I got interested because while per usual the mortal personas are Not Them... They then carry the collection of personas with them. Those experiences change them and actively linger. And the way the couple occupies these stories is fun - playing it straight, playing along, role swapping, cat demon petting...

This xanxia's lore says that the person's essence, the heart of them, is present deep-down: regardless of the outline proscribed by the Fate Book. And these guys are so very extra that they skew every trial they participate in. I liked how near the end, FL says do you know who I am? and ML lists all of her different identities she's carried. In Eternal Love, I was super annoyed by Ye Hua telling Bai Qian that I know you, you're Su Su. Sorry but to me Su Su has nothing in common with Bai Qian. But here, by the end, I did feel like all of those people are a part of FL and she feels that too.

For these two, I can believe it doesn't matter.

I feel like this drama missed the opportunity to do something interesting with Pearl's mentality. We saw that Fate has this indifference outlook on everything bc he already knows how things gonna go, plus being alive since the beginning of time. Like, it made sense that he wouldn't have a human mindset and worldview. He's apathic and view things in a larger scale than most characters. It really separated him from everyone else. He's not human or even god; he's more.

Now, imagine the same for Pearl aka MXL. She's an artifect of time, right? Wouldn't it be cool if she's different bc of that too? Now, we don't really know the extent she can do with her time power. But, imagine maybe she too can view past, present, and future at the same time like Fate, but she can't tell the difference. Maybe she lives in every single moment (kinda like everything everywhere all at once or Lidia from Agatha All Along), so she's very confused. And since they somehow dropping hints about the 4th dimension and beyond with Haotian, maybe she's the one who can contact them.

IDK i just think it looked like Fate has more authority between them, he's the one who we've seen speaking to Haotian, like why did Haotian never talk to Pearl tho? Even when it's about her, he just talk to Fate and tell him to deal with her.
