mngwa or Rowan/26/any pronouns blog for reblogs. I tag for triggers (ask if you need anything tagged), otherwise this is generally a tagless mess. block the "dead things" tag if you don't want to see that. I do post NSFW stuff, generally jokes, and it is tagged under "nsfw", again block it if you don't want to see that.

there's a p common attitude in fandom spaces (fandom in general, not a specific one) that's like "why care about canon, or the characters being ooc? we're here to play with the dolls any way we like" and as much as i obviously am a person who thinks about canon a lot in theory i'm into that. in practice though when popular fanon takes things in a wildly different direction from canon so often it's in the service of taking something that was originally canonically weird and interesting and making it blander. it's flattening a complex character into a broad archetype i've seen a million times before, it's taking two characters with a complicated canonical relationship and writing them in a way where you could find-and-replace the names with any other popular migratory slash fandom pairing and the fic would make as much if not more sense. if you're going to break away from canon at least do something interesting? don't make it less weird? i feel like i'm watching someone take a really beautiful expensive cut of wagyu steak and grind it into hamburger to cook it well done and cover it in ketchup

He had to lay down to eat dinner bc he doesn’t believe he can stand in his surgical suit. I put him on his feet and keep my hands on him and he’s fine. As soon as I move my hands he goes gumby and flops over

everything is very bad in this modern age but i truly think Merlin Bird ID App is a wonder so astonishing that it almost makes everything else worth it. like you can just sit somewhere and listen to birds and 4 minutes later you will know stuff you didn't know before. not only that but you might even retain that knowledge. this morning i sat with my coffee and let Merlin record my surroundings for 4 minutes and now i know 1) what a northern parula sounds like 2) that i have been listening to northern parulas for years without being aware that they even existed. this cheerful little gold-and-gray guy has been trilling at me my whole life and i've never known his name and now i do! you can sit there and hear something and think "that sounds familiar, i'd like to know what that is" and then look down and see the little bird ID light up LIVE. ohhh of course, a red-eyed vireo, how could i have forgotten. AI good actually.

The ehlers danlos syndrome person to historical costumer pipeline is or will be a thing and I shall explain why.
At some point one discovers that some sort of supportive structure around your torso feels incredibly comfortable and gives your tired muscles a rest. What’s the coolest and most non obtrusive torso bracing garment? A corset. Believe me when I say that when your torso has the structural integrity of a wet sack of jello, a tightly laced corset makes you feel like a god.
And because historical corsets tend to be more comfortable and are usually made with regular wear in mind, they are the natural choice.
Then you have the shoes. What shoes is someone with unstable ankles supposed to wear, you ask?Lace up boots, for stability. And due to their middle of the heel heel placement, historical lace up boots tend to be way more comfortable than the modern variety.Even the non healed ones, really. Couple that with the fact that Edwardian and Victorian boots are really really pretty…
And after the boots and the corset, it’s a very slippery slope.
Pretty soon you’ll be wondering how to hide your corset under your clothes for when an outer corset is not the vibe, and you’ll be buying yourself a corset cover. Or making one yourself. They’re a great starter project. But that looks weird with a fitted top so cool flowy blouse it is.
Then you realize wearing this with a skirt makes you feel intensely powerful but you don’t want to keep tripping over it so you add petticoats.
And then you realize your neck isn’t so great at holding up your head so you really need to find a hairstyle where your hair sits on top of your head instead of to the sides or to the back so that it’s balanced and you don’t get a neck ache. A high bun it is. Not too tightly, because your scalp is sensitive, but a high bun still works if you bobby-pin it in place.
And then one day, you look in the mirror and you’re dressed like Anne of Green Gables.
And you’ve never looked cooler.

It’s summer and that means the kids are going to camp! Last week the kids were at gymnastics camp at the place they take lessons. This week they’re at kosher culinary camp at the local Chabad.
The difference could not be more stark.
Last week, I drove up outside the front doors for pick up and drop off, shouted their first names through the window of my car, and either received a thumbs up at drop off, or had the kids walk out unaccompanied at pick up.
This week, I had to walk them inside (adults have to present ID to be allowed in the building) and check them in with two separate sets of adults. I had to present ID again (separately from getting into the building) to be allowed to pick them up. If someone who is not their legal guardian is going to pick them up, paperwork needs to be filled out in advance.
Last week, the only people outside the building were a couple of teenagers in orange vests to make sure the littlest of kids got inside the building ok.
This week, the only people outside the building were security guards with walkie talkies on one hip and very obvious pistols on the other.
My kids are signed up for three different Jewish camps this summer. All three of them have sent emails outlining the security measures in place to protect the children. No details, because the more people that know the details, the easier it is for someone with ill intent to discover and subvert them, but I know that there will be armed security personnel at all three camps and they will be coming with on field trips. I know that staff at all three camps have been conducting safety drills in the weeks leading up to camp, and I know that all three camps are partnered with local and federal law enforcement to stay up to date on any threats or recommended security changes.
I have never received information like this from any non-Jewish camp. I have received information like this from every Jewish camp.
This is what Jews are talking about when we say that antisemitism impacts the way we live our lives even when we are not being directly targeted by antisemitism. Summer camps shouldn’t have to hire armed guards to keep kids safe. Going to camp at the JCC should not put you at greater risk for violence than going to camp at the YMCA. Requesting that non-Jews help us live in a world where that’s true is not a ridiculous thing to ask.
And before anyone tries to say “Oh just because you feel like you’re not safe that doesn’t mean you’re actually not safe,” I’d like to point out two things. The first is that the Chabad my kids were at today has received multiple bomb threats in the last couple of years. We feel like we’re not safe because people have made it clear that they would like to attack us. We are, in fact, actually not safe.
And the second is that even if we were actually safe, and all the people out there who were saying that (((Zionist))) institutions should be attacked were just running their mouths and were not going to act on it (disproven by recent (and not recent) violent attacks, but we’ll accept the premise for the sake of argument), isn’t it pretty messed up that antisemitic actions have made Jews feel like this is necessary? Like, if one person in a couple was constantly so verbally threatening to their partner that the partner was 1) fearful for their safety and 2) felt it necessary to reach out to law enforcement, we would rightfully call that abuse. Why can we easily recognize that behavior as being immoral in that scenario, but find it acceptable in the local/national/fucking global treatment of Jews?

I've been off of my low dose post menopausal testosterone for a month bc the only compounding pharmacy is too far away and I'm too busy and it's fascinating to watch all the health problems that went away on it creep back. It's such solid evidence that yeah, maybe more cis women need T and more cis men need E probably to actually live healthy functional lives but we're so binary and stupid about sex and gender that T is the Man Hormone and E is the Woman Hormone and there's a baseline for cis people??? Insanity. Insane. Absolutely insane.
Off of T, my joint pain is back, my blood pressure is up, I've gained weight, I'm volatile if I don't control myself, I'm constantly an emotional wreck, and I can barely get out of bed. It took me years to get them to let me try T, and they kept arguing that all of those things would get worse ON T. I fucking hate modern medical science modern sex and gender science too bc my queer clinic was shocked to hear all this. Genuinely. They don't get it despite being THE local hormone clinic for queer folks specifically. They don't understand intersex bodies or that maybe our baselines are bullshit on an individual basis. All of modern sex and gender science absolutely ignores the natural sex differences in most people.
How many people get put on the wrong hormone for their wellness? Cis or trans. Because we've assigned hormones to gender. How many cis women deal with worsening body pain and mental issues bc they were put on estrogen when they needed T? Why are we gendering fucking hormones
