Galaxy A91 will have 45W fast charging, Samsung confirms

Samsung is already working on new Galaxy A series smartphones, and we're not talking about "s" variations, although quite a few of those have recently been made official too (and more are on the way). The 2020 A family will comprise of handsets with names ending in "1", and the highest-end of the bunch will be the Galaxy A91, unsurprisingly. Earlier this month we found out that this beast would sport a 108 MP main rear camera sensor, flanked by a 16 MP ultrawide and a 12 MP telephoto with 5x optical zoom, as well as a 3D ToF camera. Now according to Samsung itself we get another tidbit about the A91: it will support 45W fast wired charging, joining the Galaxy Note10+ and Note10+ 5G in this select group. This information comes straight from a listing on the Samsung Hungary website. It has also confirmed the existence in the near future of a Galaxy A90 5G, which has long been rumored. This model will only get support for 25W wired charging, though. The A90 5G should be Samsung's more affordable 5G offering - not cheap per se, just cheaper than the flagships' 5G versions. Honor V30 will have 5G support

Honor's next flagship offering will bake in 5G support, according to the brand's president, Zhao Ming. He officially confirmed this, as well as the phone's name: Honor V30. That's not surprising considering that last year the company launched the Honor V20 in China, and the same phone as the Honor View 20 in other markets. So there's a big chance that we'll see the V30 outside of China marketed as the Honor View 30. Whether it will keep the 5G support remains to be seen. Also interesting will be to see how this model will be priced, since last year's V20 was the cheapest device to employ the Kirin 980 chipset, starting off at just CNY 2,999 ($419 or €377 at the current exchange rates). The Honor V30 will employ the soon to be announced Kirin 990, along with the Balong 5000 modem, but because of the 5G support its price may go up significantly compared to its predecessor. The V20 got official on December 26, 2018, so the V30 could be unveiled around the same time this year. Source (in Chinese) | Via Read the full article

Samsung Galaxy M40 update brings dedicated camera Night mode, August security patch

Samsung is sending out a new software update to the Galaxy M40 units sold in India. This arrives over-the-air as a 366MB download, and upon installation will make your phone run software version M405FDDU1ASH1. The August security patch level is integrated, and you also get the dedicated QR scanner feature that lets you scan codes whenever the camera is pointed at them, without needing to install any third-party apps for this purpose. A lot of Samsung devices have been getting this lately.

The same goes for the dedicated camera Night mode. This too has landed on the Galaxy M40, following its appearance on Galaxy flagships. As the name implies, you can simply switch to this mode whenever you like in order to capture a long-exposure shot with a steady hand. If you bought your M40 in India and haven't yet received the update notification, you can perhaps manually check for its availability by going to Settings > Software update > Download and install. Samsung Galaxy M30s with 48MP main rear camera to launch in India next month

Despite what a purported leaked photo showing the rear panel of the upcoming Galaxy M30s may have implied, the smartphone will sport three rear cameras, just like the M30 that was released back in March. However, the main sensor will be hugely upgraded, going from a 13 MP unit to a 48 MP one, according to a new report out of India. Speaking of the subcontinent, the Galaxy M30s will apparently launch there as soon as next month. The same source goes on to say that the M30s will use an Exynos chipset that has so far not been seen in the Galaxy M series of devices, which probably means it'll be borrowed from the Galaxy A family. We should also expect to see "an industry-leading battery capacity" in the M30s, which will come with fast charging support. Since it's part of the affordable M line, the M30s will probably come in at under INR 20,000 (that's approximately $278 or €251 at the current exchange rates). Source | Via Read the full article

Nokia to bring affordable 5G phones next year

While 5G phones like the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G and Huawei Mate 20 X 5G are slowly expanding their availability, their prices are stuck quite high. According to a new interview with HMD’s chief product officer Juho Sarvikas, we'll see a more affordable 5G Nokia phone next year with its upcoming value flagship. Sarvikas explains that HMD sees an opportunity in bringing 5G to a wider audience and it starts with cutting down the cost of the handset. The ultimate goal is to bring a 5G phone at half the price of current offerings on the market. Nokia is working closely with chipset maker Qualcomm on developing the phone and is also in talks with US carriers to further its stateside expansion.

An affordable 5G phone will surely help with 5G adoption rates as currently even the selected few that do get 5G coverage need to reach very deep in their pockets to take advantage of it. Source Read the full article

Nokia 7.2 surfaces in more hands-on photos

Nokia 7.2 is coming in two weeks at IFA and the trickle of leaks is turning into a river. The latest one shows the final design of the device complete with a cyan paint job we haven't seen before. We get another look at the waterdrop notch on the front while the back features a triple camera setup and flash housed in a circular array. The fingerprint sensor remains below the cameras. This being a Nokia phone it's basically guaranteed to be part of the Android One Programme and run stock Android.

The Nokia 7.2 already passed certification agencies abroad and was even shown to media members at a Zeiss Group event recently. Given HMD is making its debut at IFA Berlin this year, we’re expecting to see the announcement of the Nokia 7.2 take place on September 5. Via Read the full article

Redmi Note 8 Pro camera samples shared

Samsung announced its 64 MP camera sensor for smartphones and companies immediately started racing which will put it on an actual smartphone first. Realme already demoed the technology and we had a hands-on, but the Redmi Note 8 Pro seems determined to beat it to the market. Just days ahead of the announcement Lu Weibing, the brand manager of Redmi, posted a photo with the new phone on Weibo, and today he went even further, printing and putting a printed 64MP image in front of Xiaomi’s HQ, then promptly posing for a photo next to the three-meter-tall poster.

This being a Tetracell sensor, it's actually meant to produce 16MP images with 4-to-1 pixel binning, and at that resolution the quality is impressive. You can see fine details in the offices on the top floors of the Di Wang Tower and while it's too early to pass final verdicts things are promising. The Redmi Note 8 Pro was teased to come with 25x zoom and will be powered by Mediatek’s chipset Helio G90T. We’ll get a fuller picture on August 29. Redmi Note 8 Pro coming on August 29 with 64MP quad camera

Earlier this month Xiaomi sub-brand Redmi announced that it will launch its 64MP camera smartphone in Q4 this year. Now we know that it will be called the Redmi Note 8 Pro and will be unveiled on August 29. Redmi shared a poster on Chinese social network Weibo giving us a glimpse of the Note 8 Pro that has three cameras aligned vertically on its back, with the fourth one placed on the right. The image further reveals that the Note 8 Pro won't come with an in-display fingerprint reader as it's placed below the rear cameras. Redmi will also announce the Note 8 on August 29 alongside the Note 8 Pro, but it's unlikely to sport a 64MP camera. More details about the Note 8 series should surface in the days leading to the official announcement on next Thursday. Source (in Chinese) Read the full article

Nokia 3 V is headed to Verizon on August 23, yours for just $168

HMD Global today announced the Nokia 3 V, its first ever device that will be offered by Verizon on post-paid plans. This builds upon how successful the Nokia 2 V has been on prepaid. The carrier will exclusively sell the handset in blue from August 23 in select stores and online. The Nokia 3 V will be yours for just $168 full retail, or 24 monthly installments of $7. The device runs Android 9 Pie and HMD Global guarantees it will receive 18 months of security patches and two OS upgrades. So for an investment of $168 you won't just be getting Android Q, but also Android R next year. That's a very interesting proposition in this price range.

Understandably though, the specs are nothing to write home about. The Nokia 3 V features a 6.26" 720p+ touchscreen, the Snapdragon 429 SoC at the helm, 2GB of RAM, 16GB of storage, and a notification light embedded in the power button. There's a dedicated Google Assistant key too, including a walkie-talkie mode in which it will listen to you until you release the button for long sentence queries. Although HMD Global's press release doesn't mention other specs, this phone seems to be a rebranded Nokia 3.2. If that is in fact the case, then expect the Nokia 3 V to sport a 4,000 mAh battery, a microSD card slot, a 13 MP rear camera, and a 5 MP selfie snapper. Source Read the full article

EMUI 9.1 is now on its way to 8 more Huawei and Honor phones

Last month Huawei and Honor sent out the update to EMUI 9.1 to 10 smartphones, and today a new batch is ready. This time around, we're talking about 8 devices in total between the two brands, including some launched as far back as 2016 - and yet they're still receiving the latest software update. Here's the full list: Huawei Mate 9, Mate 9 Pro, Mate 9 Porsche Design, P10, P10 Plus, nova 2s, Honor V9, and Honor 9. The EMUI 9.1 update has already been going out to some of these in some territories, but now we have an official announcement touting the rollout. Keep in mind though that said announcement is from China, so if you have one of the models above but bought it in another market, it might still take a while for the latest software to make it to your device. EMUI 9.1 is based on Android 9 Pie like EMUI 9 before it, but it packs some worthwhile improvements, including the EROFS file system which improves read and write performance of the flash memory by around 20%. It's better at file compression too, which means it has the potential to save you up to 2GB of space on your phone. GPU Turbo 3.0 is also built into EMUI 9.1, and it currently supports more than 20 game titles including PUBG Mobile and Fortnite. The UI itself has been slightly polished, getting a more minimalist vibe with new wallpapers and redesigned icons. Finally, video ringtones are supported and Huawei Vlog lets you easily edit and share your creations. Via Read the full article

Nokia 7.2 renders show off the circular camera design and slim body

While we are still waiting for the Nokia 7.2 and 6.2 to be officially announced, we get to see the former in the latest case renders that surfaced online. The images show a rather slim design and a circular design of the camera module on the back. Everything on the renders seems to be in line with what we've seen so far. We also know that the Nokia 6.2 will sport similar looks so these renders work both ways.

A quick rewind - we expect the handset to arrive with Snapdragon 710, 6GB of RAM and should be here by the end of this month if the initial rumors are to be believed. Source Read the full article

The upcoming vivo NEX 3 will support 5G

Vivo's product manager, Li Xiang, just can't stop teasing the still unannounced vivo NEX 3 flagship smartphone. He already confirmed that the handset will have a "waterfall screen" and will retain the much-beloved 3.5mm audio jack. He was also bold enough to share some sketches of the phone's design. Today's order of the day, however, is 5G. The manager shared a partial screenshot of the home screen and it's hard not to notice the two 5G icons in the upper-left and the upper-right corner. Then again, the device will likely sport the newest Snapdragon 855+ chip, so it's only natural to adopt 5G as well. The launch is nearing and we can't wait to see what vivo has in stored for us.
