Crystal Tokyo Met Gala - Usagi Tsukino

@crystaltokyometgala  is a little fandom project where everyone is encourage to create “high fashion” looks for a Sailor Moon character under the guise of it being for the annual Crystal Tokyo Met Gala. 2021 theme is Dreams and Eternity.

Since I started this project, I’m determined to draw at least all main characters in a look to match the theme.

Usagi is matched with the theme of Eternity by turning her prototype Sailor Moon outfit, one of the first sketches Naoko made when creating the series, into a gown. Usagi has become an eternal icon internationally and I thought it fitting to give her an outfit based on where it may have allegedly started. It’s also inspired by the recent wedding dress line.

Excited to FINALLY share this one with you all! I had the second to last line in the Sailor Stars Song and after a few drafts thought the lyrics would be perfect showcasing the end of Usagi’s journey, where her friends have become crystaline and Cosmos arrives to supports her in her final hour. Usagi may see Cosmos as her Sailor Star, but Usagi is truly the hope of the galaxy, the real Sailor Star, and Cosmos is here to remind her.

In The Sunlit Garden

A companion piece to Chibs and Hotaru in the Utena universe, this was also a really old sketch I reworked and finished on stream this week! Rei and Minako are each other’s Rose Brides, I thought that was a fun idea rather than make one of them the duelist.

I think their sword motifs are self explanatory, though I was thinking a lot about their twin daggers from PGSM, which is why they are largely a single color scheme. I also modeled the hilts after their tiaras. Aside from that, their neck clasps are Rei’s pendant from the manga and the crescent compact.

Since I started this project, I’m determined to draw at least all main characters in a look to match the theme.

Another merge of dream and eternity theme with Rei wearing a cape symbolizing the eternal flame she often prays to for guidance and her miko garb as Rei intends to inherit Hikawa Shrine from her grandfather.

Rei Hino is MARSRA, kaiju of the Hikawa Shrine. She is summoned by the song of the Marsra Twins, Phobos and Deimos.

While I was watching the Eternal movies I was thinking how Phobos and Deimos remind me of the Mothra twins and wouldn’t it be funny if Rei was Mothra. WOULDN’T IT BE FUNNY. :<

I spent way too much time on this for such a stupid idea, but I do really like how it turned out. I referenced vintage Mothra movie posters and different fairy twin songs and dances for the poses. I’ll be putting it up in my Society6 shop, the high res file is currently available on patreon if you would like to make your own personal print!
