NON-SPOILER REVIEW Overall: I did enjoy myself. There is a lot of comedy in this one. It’s at least 50 - 60% comedy so everyone is laughing from start to finish. It’s about 80% scripted comedy and 20% improve comedy. It was very entertaining and very enjoyable. We all laughed the entire time. So if you just want to enjoy, laugh, have a good time, you are going to LOVE this stage! It’s just one long Hanamaru (the anime) episode to be honest. My favourite parts of the whole stage were definitely Manba and co’s dynamics and relationship. I really, really loved Sayo and Manba’s relationship and body language and small gestures towards each other throughout the play which really shows how close they’ve gotten. It’s really sad that Sayo is only there for the first Tokyo run because the little things he did for and towards Manba just melted my heart. Also, I really, really loved Manba and Doudanuki’s dynamic in this show too! I absolutely adored how Douda treated Manba this time around. However, personally, that’s not what I want from Touken Ranbu. I want pain, I want fighting, I want history, I want conflict. That does not happen in this stage. So this is not what I wanted. I started to get really bored and I got over the jokes after about 45 minutes into the show (the show is 145 minutes long). They repeat the same group/set of jokes about 10 times, so obviously I got bored of them. I feel like this plot could’ve been done in about 30 minutes. The fact they take the entire 145 minutes for this one simple plot line (it’s a really simple story), it really gets boring in some spots. The lack of fighting (which is less than 10 minutes long for the entirety of the play), the lack of history, the lack of conflict (even between the Touken Danshi!) really got to me and this just wasn’t what I wanted. Like I said, I did enjoy myself and I did laugh throughout and I did have a good time. But when Touken has set this ‘dark, despair, historical, fighting’ theme for so long, you can’t expect us to not expect that this time around, AND when we don’t get it, you can’t expect me not to be bored and disappointed. Which is what I am. Disappointed. Again. Rating: 5/10 (if you enjoy comedy and lighthearted stuff then this’d be about 8/10)

Story: The story takes place after the events of the game (see details here). So we follow Chougi joining the gang at the Honmaru, but a lot of the gang are against Chougi and Manbachan (Yamanbagiri Kunihiro) meeting because Chougi is the ‘true’ Yamanbagiri sword. So they try to delay and play tricks so they can’t meet. And we follow those shenanigans.

What is The Untamed, why should I watch it (apart from the pretty boys) and why are you tagging it with mdzs??????

LISTEN. I dragged y’all into Guardian, I did the same with SCI, and most recently with H3: Trapped as well, so buckle up and get ready to watch some The Untamed. 

Some background - The Untamed is very loosely based on the web novel Mo Dao Zu Shi (or Grandmaster of Demonic Cultivation). The characters are all there, the story line has been messed with a little. That’s why I’ve been tagging it all mdzs as well.

I’ll start with links so I don’t forget towards the end:

NOW. where do i start?? okay. some basic background: this is a xianxia story, they’re all trying to cultivate their way to becoming immortal. there are different sects who have different…methods of cultivation?? Y’ALL KNOW WHAT I MEAN.

this pretty boy is wei wuxian of the jiang sect, the main character of the show. fun characteristics you will be able to observe from wwx include: massive chaotic energy, the Troublemaker™, DISASTER GAY. 

anyway. wwx has p unconventional/non-traditional ways of thinking in relation to cultivation. this will dun dun dun get him into much trouble. 

i mean. the source novel is called grandmaster of demonic cultivation. three guesses who this grandmaster is. 

this other stoic, straight-laced pretty boy is lan wangji of the lan sect, the love interest other main character. i would say that lwj is a distinguished gay, but he’s also the one who fell for wwx first and proceeded not to say anything about it until everything went to shit. and actually even then he didn’t say anything, and then he couldn’t say anything because wwx was dead.

yeah, about that. i’m not going to consider that a spoiler because this happens in the first scene in the first ep of the untamed. the gist of it is as follows: wwx forms the demonic cultivation, the other sects start hating on him, heaps of bad shit happen in between tbh, and then………..

*chef kiss* beautiful. this is not book canon (i mean, wwx still dies, but not like this, this was BIG GAY) but I DIG IT. 

ANYWAY. this happens. my poor child lwj who has been in love with wwx since about the first time he got teased by wwx mourns him for more than a decade. 

think that’s the end of it? no my friends that’s just the beginning. that’s just the INTRODUCTORY BACKSTORY. 

anyway. many years post-death of wwx, he gets summoned back from the dead through a sacrificial ritual that has him taking over the body of mo xuanyu. 

he animates the dead by playing his flute it’s beautiful also cool cool cool i just realised he has nice fingers so this is going to be a thing now too

(side note 2 because we were talking about lwj also being a disaster gay?? did you think that watching the man he loves die without getting to tell him that he love him would have taught this boy something? LMAO NO. lwj still doesn’t say anything even after wwx comes back to life. HE IS A DISASTER GAY MASQUERADING AS A DISTINGUISHED GAY.)

the rest of it is just the resurrected wwx and lwj travelling around catching monsters, clearing wwx’s name and falling in love. it’s beautiful. or at least that’s how it goes in the book. i’m….not sure how canon will proceed.
