Tips For Good Health
This article is about some healthful, heart-smart foods you can start doing right away.
1. Get Your Heart Rate Up: Know your Heart Rate.
You need to know your average heart rate to know how much exercise you’re getting. Remember, you’re not trying to burn calories, keep exercising or change your excessive weight. The real key to good health is establishing a healthy heart rate for good health is hard to do. It’s a combination of engaging in regular physical activity, working with your heart to maintain a steady, healthy heart rate, managing stress on a regular basis. Most exercise experts say you should exercise approximately 150 minutes each week, including 15 minutes a day of vigorous exercise, as well as a 20-minute walk for each hour of exercise.
Recently stated on new research has that these results may be skewed because it’s based on outdated data. There are many studies proving the benefits of physical activity, in fact, 65% of adults who believe they’re not exercising are taking semi-extreme physical activity. It is even more important to make sure you eat regularly, in the context of a healthy diet and get extra nourishment like extra fruits and vegetables.
2. Drink Plenty of Water: Your Body Needs Water To Routinely Work.
If water is a great electrolyte , it should be the second most important one too in the context of maintaining good health. You can find all sorts of energy drinks that have little flavor, but have a bunch of sugar in them. This approach only chills your stomach during the work out, it doesn’t provide you enough electrolyte, so you go back to the beginning the next day with a hangry tummy. Ensure you get 70 oz water a day or more. It is also important to get your daily dose of at least 1 tablespoon of fresh lemon juice daily. Whether you pick fruit or veggies, a glass of flavorful, flavorful green tea or sweetened water is fine. Always check with your doctor before making any changes to your diet.
3. Listen to Your Body: Always make sure to listen to your body.
Your doctor is going to worry a lot about your weight gain/loss but your brain won’t get fatter. Also, if you get into a vicious cycle of overeating, body moving the other way, unhealthy sleep and fighting inflammation, you may never recover. This is all because your metabolism is driven by your body , not your thoughts. There are safe ways to control inflammatory markers like C-reactive protein and so many more.

Ayurvedic Oat and Milk Facial Cleanser

This is a facial product that is completely natural, truly beautiful, and amazingly effective. In addition to nourishing milk and oats, it features ancient herbs, Neem and Gotu Kola, both used for healing and skincare for millennia. Although there is no soap in the actual recipe, it very effectively cleanses and moisturizes the skin, leaving it unbelievably soft and smooth. It feels and smells really earthy - part of what I love about it - and has numerous health benefits.
Nourishing Milk and Oats Facial Cleanser
1/4 cup powdered goat milk
1/4 c organic oats
1 tsp or 3 caps opened of Neem
1 tsp or 3 caps opened of Gotu Kola
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 - 1/2 tsp nutmeg
Grind the oats in a food processor to a smaller grain size. Depending on how you like the exfoliation, you can leave some of the round pieces or grind it completely down. Mix the ground oats with the powdered milk, Neem, Gotu Kola, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir!
Place a tbsp size in your hand or a bowl and the same size ( 1:1 ) amount of water. Mix and rub on your face. I try to leave it on for a minute or two to let the nutrients sink in.
This cleanser can be used everyday and is extremely versatile! It can be mixed with cream, yogurt or honey as well:
Water (everyday, or any skin type)
Cream (for dry skin)
Yogurt (for hyperpigmentation)
Raw honey (for healing)
When mixed with honey, leave on as a mask for 10 - 15 min. The benefits of the cleanser AND honey are out of this world when combined!
History and Benefits of the Ingredients
Oats
The use of oats began as early as 2000 BC traced to Egypt and the Arabian peninsula. Some of the most famous ancient authors made references to oats, including Ovid, Pliny the Elder, Hippocrates, and Disocorides. Interestingly, all refer to the medicinal properties of oats, especially in the field of skin care, while only (if at all) make passing references to them as a food source.
Oats nourish the skin in a variety of ways. They whisk away dead cells and fight inflammation, the main cause of aging / wrinkles. They relieve dryness, soothe irritation, and coat the skin with a fine protective film, helping the skin maintain its barrier function. Oats have natural cleansers called saponins, which gently remove oil and dirt and healthy, lubricating fats leaving the skin moisturized. Oats are fabulous for us sensitive people - and sensitive skin with its soothing properties.
Milk
Milk has also been used for beauty and skincare for centuries. Cleopatra was renowned for her use of luxurious milk baths. The girl really did know a thing or two. Milk really does a body good, but if you are like me - I'd prefer to bathe in it then drink it :) Also, I don't have 700 lactating donkeys readily available to provide my bath milk (like Cleopatra) so the powdered form is usually the best for long term use / storage.
Milk contains a plethora of vitamins and minerals that enhance cell division and production, boost collagen and protect the skin from radicals including Vitamin A, D, B6, B12, Biotin, Potassium, Calcium, Magnesium, Selenium, and protein.
The real star component of milk for skin care is alpha hydroxy acid (or lactic acid). It removes dead skin cells and breaks down the bonds that hold them together. This results in younger looking, healthier, and fresher skin! If you have heard of alpha hydroxy acids before, it may be because many face creams on the market utilize chemical versions of what milk has naturally.
Neem
Neem is like honey and I could write a book on the benefits and miraculous things about it! But to be brief, it is one of the chosen healing plants used in Ayurvedic medicine.
Ayurveda comes from India and means the "science of life". I think one of the most beautiful things about Ayurveda is the belief that we are microcosms of the universe, and all that is in the universe, is in us. The practice works on the belief that the body is comprised of the five elements, earth, wind, air, water, and space / or ether. Essentially, health is achieved from the balance of these elements. (that is really, really brief. I will elaborate on Ayurveda in new posts coming up...)
Known as the wonder tree of India, neem is high in Vitamin C and has been used for centuries to heal as an antiseptic, anti fungal, and anti-inflammatory agent - fighting viruses and bacteria, urinary disorders, ringworm, fevers, burns, skin diseases, and inflammatory diseases. Neem removes toxins, purifies the blood, and neutralizes free radicals.
Gotu Kola
Gotu Kola is also one of the chosen miracle herbs used in Ayurvedic medicine. It has been used to treat health conditions for thousands of years in India, China, and Indonesia. Known as “Brahmi” , (the greatest of the great), it is used in Ayurvedic medicine as a brain food to improve all aspects of mental functioning, including comprehension, memory and recollection.
It nourishes and supports the formation of quality blood as well as bone marrow and nerves. Gotu Kola is believed to retard the aging process and is used in the treatment of insomnia, stress, depression, nervousness and disturbed emotions, memory loss and even serious nervous system disorders such as epilepsy and schizophrenia. Considered “the herb of enlightenment,” gotu kola promotes mental calm and clarity and is often used in the practice of yoga and meditation (sweet added benefits !).
In skincare, it acts as an anti-inflammatory, collagen stimulator, and miraculous healer of skin tissue.
Fun Facts:
Gotu kola got the nickname tiger's herb because injured tigers often rub against it to heal their wounds. Gotu Kola features in both Chinese and Indian myths and folklore. The Tai Chi Chuan master Li Ching-Yun purportedly lived to an advanced age of over 200 years old, due in part to his use of Gotu kola. In Sri Lanka there is a tale of a 10th century king who claimed gotu kola provided the energy and stamina he needed to satisfy his extensive harem.
Cinnamon
I want to go into these 2 spices more later, so very briefly....
This spice's origin has been traced to Sri Lanka thousands of years ago where the healing benefits of cinnamon were extracted from the bark of the plant.
For skin care use, cinnamon's very high antioxidant levels stimulate the blood and help to plump the skin. Although it is a spice, it is safe to be used on the face.
Nutmeg
Nutmeg is one of two spices that grow on an evergreen tree is native to islands near Indonesia. These trees bear nutmeg, which is the seed of the tree, as well as mace, a less common spice derived from the dried reddish shell of the seed. This is the only tree which is the source of two distinct spices in the world. When used on the skin, nutmeg helps to remove toxins from the body, stimulate cell growth, and heal scars!

Yaaaaas. This spa in Kansas City was the highlight of my trip to KC -- now I’m thinking about moving there! I was in town for the Developer’s Conference, and after having jetlag from the flight, I really needed to get the kinks straightened out, and glad I came across this place.
Compared to other spas I tried in the area, I found this one gave the best full body massages. I believe the massage therapist that worked on me was named May. She is a wonderful person, and we had many interesting conversations during the trip. Thank you May!!
