Okay, let’s put aside that Steven watched people die more than once, including himself. And also the fact that this was more than a little disorienting for him.
It’s quite cute that she can pass her ability to others through a kiss.
The fact that Garnet placed that faith in him, and gave him the information he needed to make a decision. Again, more than anyone, she really does trust him so much and encourage him. And it was more about the decision-making aspect, rather than just, hey look, here’s all the ways you can get hurt. That was there, too, sure, but… different emphasis I suppose.
She’s not saying, here’s what to do Steven, or no don’t do that. She’s saying… here’s what I can show you, and you decide the best option. And she’s there the whole time he’s having the visions, so that she support him and tell him that.
Look at her smile, too. She just. Loves him so much. ;-; And I love them. And Pearl is still standing strangely, as Pearl does.

This was supposed to be posted years ago, and I still plan on making a full analysis on Lars and Steven’s relationship, but either way, face me rambling about these two again:
Stuck Together is my second favorite episode of the series, only behind The Good Lars (which is a whole other ramble for another day). Of course, you’re likely aware Lars is my favorite character, but Stuck Together is truly one of the most underrated episodes of the whole series. Sure, it’s technically just an episode to get you ready for the feared Trial and it only features four characters – Lars, Steven, Topaz, and Aquamarine. It’s a rather simple episode, yet what makes it so good is the heart-to-heart between Lars and Steven, as well as Topaz, who listens to everything.
In this setting, everything is hopeless. Steven has sacrificed himself yet again, and he’s seemingly alone through all this… when he finds out Lars has been hiding in the ship this whole time, after not being able to stick up for himself – and for Sadie. Steven tries to convince Aquamarine to let Lars go, but to no avail. Finally, Lars and Steven are both trapped in Topaz’s body, as they finally head to Homeworld.
This episode is perhaps the one where you see Lars’ and Steven’s personalities clashing the most. Rebecca Sugar has already stated that the two are opposites – Lars refuses to get help, while Steven insists on helping everyone. That, and all the other differences between them that will be more detailed later. Either way, Lars has completely given up, after running away from the potluck in The Good Lars, and again, after not being able to protect Sadie. Steven, on the other hand, tries his hardest to save Lars. Initially, the latter does blame the former for being abducted, but he’ll soon understand Steven’s side in this whole thing.
At Lars’ complete lack of cooperation, Steven finally snaps at him, and for the first time, Lars breaks down. He admits his fears, and a secret admiration for Steven:
“Why do you think I’m capable of anything?! You think I can do all this stuff, but I can’t! I can’t because… I’m a wuss, Steven. I’m just… *sniffles* … afraid. I’ve always just been stupid and afraid. Not like you. You’re always helping people. You’re never afraid.”
… and then Steven also finally admits:
“Lars… I’m afraid right now.”
This is a breaking point for Steven, too. Up until now, he’s barely been honest to others about how he feels about everything that has happened to him, and all the expectations surrounding him. We all know Lars has been deeply insecure and likely depressed since season 1 (“Do you ever feel lonely, even when you’re around people?”), but Steven’s feelings have always been neglected both by other characters, especially the gems, as well as by us, the viewers. Regardless, the evidence has always been there.
“I thought if I turned myself in, it’d fix everything, but… I don’t want to do this, Lars. I’ve been to space before, but not like this. They’re taking me straight to their terrible leaders that want to destroy Earth and destroy me for something I never even did. I just wanted to save everyone, but I couldn’t even do that because, look, you’re still here.”
What makes this heart-to-heart particularly emotional, is that Lars and Steven are obvious opposites of the other, and they both hide their true sides. Lars is mean, cynical, selfish, and short-tempered, but he has a softer side to himself – something that Sadie states in Joking Victim, and that presents itself subtly throughout the show. Lars is secretly selfless and kind, and passionate. He’s passionate about cooking, and quite talented, too. Yet it’s all eventually sabotaged by his social anxiety and depression, that he runs away before he’s even actually rejected. Steven, on the other hand, is kind, innocent, patient, and unaware of social cues, so he doesn’t really have trouble socializing with others like Lars does. However, even from the beginning – specifically as seen in the episode Lars and the Cool Kids –, it’s revealed that Steven has an “ugly” side to himself: he grows spiteful, vicious, angry, and violent, which, interestingly enough, is the core of his Tiger Millionaire persona (which, by the way, is admired by no one other than Lars). As the show progresses, Steven is more prone to lashing out at others the more he’s exposed to traumatizing events. And most importantly, Steven ALSO worries a lot about impressing the gems, which mirrors Lars’ desire to befriend the Cool Kids. After all, the Cool Kids are basically the human teenage version of the Crystal Gems.
With this in mind, after Steven is vulnerable and remorseful, Lars… tries to cheer him up. He gives him kindness and understanding, which he doesn’t usually do. This isn’t the first time Lars is kind to Steven, either, which shows how much he actually means to him.
“We'll… figure it out. We’ve got like… a billion light-years ‘till we get there, right?”
But here’s the thing about their relationship: Steven doesn’t admire Lars because of his kind side. He admires Lars for the very things that make him unlikable. Steven has always dreamed of being Lars’ BFF, and that’s something a lot of fans never quite understood (especially since Lars was the most hated character of the show back in the day). Like I said, Lars is Steven’s opposite, he’s mean, he’s grumpy, and he prioritizes himself first. I imagine that he probably wants to be like Lars. Steven outright states after this that he admires Lars for never “sugarcoating how much everything sucks”, and it’s true. Lars reacts to the gem stuff like any other normal person would – this sucks, this is wrong, this is messed up. Everyone else in Steven’s circle tries to sanitize it, but Lars doesn’t. Lars is really quite different from Steven’s other friends when you think about it.
With Lars, Steven is able to be selfish. He says:
“You know what’s even more messed up? Even though you’re in huge trouble, and it’s all my fault… I’m kind of glad you’re here? I… I don’t want to be alone right now. *sobs* Isn’t that awful?”
This is one of the few times Steven really opens up about his feelings throughout the show. The only people he does so are the Cool Kids (Joy Ride), Amethyst (Steven vs. Amethyst), Greg (Lion 4), and then Lars. I personally don’t count Connie, because Steven never has the initiative to go to her in the first place; it usually happens when it’s already gotten out of hand (as seen in Full Disclosure and Mindful Education). And even then, the only ones who even do something about this are the Cool Kids and Lars, because they acknowledge that Steven is a kid, and that he’s got a lot on his plate. In fact, I think this is the first time Steven even explicitly says that he’s afraid. He’s always expected to step up and protect others, or else horrible things are going to happen. Steven’s selfish needs, in his point of view, always backfire, like in Adventures in Light Distortion, where he believes that his desire of getting answers led to his father getting captured, and the gems disappearing during the high-speed mode of the ship.
It’s very meaningful for the boys to confide in someone. Lars and Steven have both been betrayed before, have both been isolated and traumatized. They’re just young boys dealing with severe self-hatred and a desperate need for approval. But they don’t have to put up appearances for each other. They can be vulnerable, they can be “ugly”, they can finally trust someone. And they choose to trust each other.
Seriously, this conversation is so great that it makes Topaz also break down in tears, after she also hid her true feelings this whole time. Their heart-to-heart opens Topaz’s mind and her love that her parts feel for the other. Finally, for the first time, the episode seems to have turned around for the good, because Topaz is willing to help Lars and Steven escape.
Except… Steven still insists to stay. Lars refuses to go without him. People don’t usually fight for Steven like this. It would’ve been easy for him to go back home, but he doesn’t. Even in the later Lars’ Head, Lars knows it’s not right for Steven to stay behind, that he doesn’t have to go through this alone. But of course, before that’s even a possibility, Aquamarine catches on, and all their hopes have gone down the drain. Interestingly, Aquamarine chooses to forget what happened, so Topaz isn’t punished.
With that, Topaz returns to her stoic position and is back at following Homeworld’s orders. Lars and Steven are separated from each other, the only thing they still had. The episode ends with a heartbreaking conclusion, and with high stakes as we’re about to witness the Trial.
It’s such a shame that Stuck Together doesn’t get enough love. It’s not a “townie” episode that people tend to hate, and it’s really good at keeping the suspense, and the emotional beats that make Steven Universe the show we all love to joke that “everyone cries”. This episode is what makes me so passionate about Lars and Steven, and this series overall.

Steven and his pink buddy making some homemade Cookie Cats. They are a bit rough around the edges, but they’re definitely still lovable nonetheless.
This is some art for chapter 9 of my su fanfic! (For those new to the fic, please be aware of the tags on the fic as it deals with some heavy themes.)
