Chapter 14 Fieldwork
Fieldwork Chapter 14
1. My mom
- My mother has all the power in the household. One because she gave birth to me and two because she provides a roof over my sisters and I head. The power is organized by age, income and religion. My family and I are muslims and in Islam it is imperative to show your parents respect. However, your mother is supposed to get the utmost respect. You are actually supposed to listen to your mother 3 times before you listen to your father. These power dynamics were established since birth and will never change.
2. My youngest sister
- I have more power than my sisters. One because she is younger than me and I have more money than her. She looks up to me and do petty favors for me when i ask. Such as washing my dish for a dollar or cleaning my room for five dollars. The power is organized by age considering she is only 14 and i’m 20 she knows I have more experience in life and will listen to me. Although I know I have this power over her I don’t abuse it because we get along pretty well. The power dynamics might change as she get older and grow into her own woman.
3. My younger sister
- I have power over my younger sister. I don’t have as much of a influence over her as in compared to my youngest sister but i still have some. The power is organized by age because she is only 15 and i am 20. She don’t do everything i say like my youngest sister, but she do some. She sometimes ask me for advice on how to deal with certain problems and she follows my advice. The power dynamics will change within the next 5-7 years when she grows into her own.

Fieldwork Assignment 13
My name is Sara Flowers and I am from Freetown, Sierra Leone. I migrated to the U.S at age 27 to pursue my dream of being a nurse, in addition to starting a family with my ex husband. I gave birth to my first child in America at age 28. I then gave birth to 2 more girls before ending my marriage with my ex husband. Before I came to America I literally thought the roads will be gold, it was like a fairytale. America was not how i thought it would be, I found it difficult to achieve my dreams here and it took me longer than I thought. I was ignorant of how expensive it is to live in America with 3 kids and no support. This set me back several years to achieve my dream of being a nurse but with determination and 20 years worth of patience I was able to finish school and start my nursing career. In my country most women do not work jobs, their responsibility is to be a housewife and make sure EVERYTHING is taken care of at home. In America there is equal opportunity for men and women to both work and be the head of a household. Young girls in my country are taught and prepared at a young age to be a housewife. As a child I cooked and cleaned for everyone in our household along with the rest of my sisters. The expectations for my children is for all 3 of them to grow to be successful and give back to where they came from. My children lives differ from mine because they will always have exposure to opportunities in America.

Fieldwork Assignment #8
Doing this family tree I realized how little i know about my father’s side of the family. Unfortunately, me and my father are not in contact so i have no idea about his side. I always wanted brothers but my abundance of male cousins is a good substitute. All of my family is from Sierra Leonean. However I noticed that none of my aunts married a man from Sierra Leone. One of my aunts married a Nigerian and my other aunt married a white man from England. My mom is the only girl in her family who started a family with a Sierra Leonean man.

Fieldwork Assignment #7
youtube
1. Masculinity
This axe commercial can be associated with masculinity because the commercial made the woman choose between 2 men and she chose the one who smelled good. Then at the end it said “Spray more, get more” implying that if a man spray more Axe they will get more women. It shows masculinity because Men love getting women attention. Men feel as if they don’t get as much women compared to their peers than they are not as masculine as them.
youtube
2. Femininity
The US soccer team commercial demonstrates femininity by having all women in the commercial and only women speaking throughout the whole commercial. Also the commercial was to uplift a women’s professional team which is rarity because professional athlete women don’t get no where as much appreciation for what they do compared to men.
3. Masculinity
This shows masculinity because most young males have a obsession of growing a beard to show his manhood. Beards are idolized by not only men but women which makes even more men desperate to grow beards to be more manly.
4. Femininity
This scene from The Color Purple demonstrates femininity because Celie finally showed enough strength and courage to stand up to her abusive husband, which is a shock because throughout the movie she did everything he said and still suffer punishment from him. She ended up leaving the abusive relationship and became a successful independent woman by the end of the movie.
youtube
5. Femininity
The Beyonce song “Run the World” is a prime example of femininity because the chorus of the song literally states that girls run the world. It is a empowering song for women.

Fieldwork Assignment #4
[Chorus: NBA YoungBoy]
Baby tell me, would you ride for a nigga?
Baby tell me, would you ride for a nigga? (Would you ride for a nigga?)
-The word “ride” is not used to describe a physical action or rollercoaster. NBA Youngboy uses a different dialect of the word “ride” which is to support and stand by him through the end regardless of the obstacle.
Livin' wrong, you ain't never seen nothin'
Promised me you would never say nothin' (You would never say nothin')
- NBA Youngboy illustrates gender because he is reminding his woman to not “snitch” if he ever gets caught up “Livin wrong”.
I'm out the north, we youngins thuggin' and poppin'
The only way that we can get it, so you know we ain't stoppin'
You step on scene, all these bitches they be lookin' to jock
We sellin' drugs, the police they keep passin' and watchin'
We get it in to the ten, so they steady keep blockin'
We roadrunnin' on our ten, steady movin' them racks
Yeah, other than that, let me show you how we rockin'
On a brand new yacht with them bottles steady poppin' (Steady poppin')
- This demonstrates power because although the first few lines were negative messages talking about how they are struggling with police and violence around him. He looks on the brighter side of things by saying although all of that is going on around him he is still having a good time. This is power because he still embraces the positives of his rough life.

Tuskegee Study
Informed Consent apply to the Tuskegee Study because they did not know the side effects of the penicillin given to the test subjects. “Do No Harm” applies to the tuskegee study because the study did the complete opposite of that it affected over 600 african americans health. They literally treated black people as guinea pigs and ran that unethical study and the subjects didn’t even remain anonymous.

Fieldwork Assignment #1
1. The drink “Arizona” is a very popular drink common in stores worldwide that comes in different flavors. Each flavor drink obviously have different ingredients, however in the common Iced tea with lemon flavor drink there are not too many ingredients. The ingredients in this drink is, premium brewed black tea using filtered water, high fructose corn syrup, citric acid and natural lemon flavor. The manufacturers put about 72 grams of sugar in each 24 oz can they make.
2. This product is the creation of John Ferolito and Domenick Vultaggio from Woodbury, New York. John and Domenick are both now living lavishly considering the fact their company has already made over 3 billion in revenue(2017). Domenick has a net worth of 3.2 billion(October 2018). While John Ferolito, the co-founder has a net worth of 5 million dollars. Provided this information I think it’s fair to say these two men have enjoyed the output of a successful company.
3. Arizona has a huge impact on the local community today. Considering how everyday companies inflate their prices to keep up with modern day society. Arizonas have been just 99 cents since the drink was debuted in 1992, and that is why they are Americas number one iced tea brand.
4. Although the name of the brand is AriZona, ironically it is manufactured in New York. The people that produce these products are also from New York. I’m pretty sure they consume it considering it is a drink and they got to try their product to see if its decent enough to sell. The median income for a sales representative of AriZona is $31,889. Delivery driver makes anywhere from 36-41 thousand annually working for the company. Arizona have a strong effect on areas with many low-income families because a can of Arizona is literally cheaper than a bottle of water, so access to this drink is quite easy to get.
5. The price for this product is 99 cents, with sales tax it might add just a fee more cents to the total. However, corn (the basis of high-fructose corn syrup) and aluminum commodity(what the liquid is contained in) prices are higher than they were when Arizona first launched. The company still maintains to keep its price the same. Arizona do not advertise so they save a lot of money being able to keep their prices 1 dollar. Them not advertising saves them money. They’ve thinned out the cans using 40% less aluminum and using more recyclable material. In regards to shipping and transportation, they move their trucks at night to avoid traffic. They also produce in more than 40 factories across the country so the trucks don’t have to go far.
6. AriZona uses aluminum to create their can. This is harmful to the environment because because mining aluminum uses large amounts of water, and generates air, water and soil pollution.

Uneven Development
The city of Baltimore is a good example of Unevern Development. There are some parts in this city that is more developed than others. For example, Downtown Baltimore is a amazing sight, there are several shopping outlets, iconic landmarks, and even a big time casino. However, if you drive just 10 minutes further than it is like a complete opposite. Abandoned houses, abundance of homelessness and just straight poverty. It don’t make sense because the casino generates so much revenue yet there are still so many underdeveloped areas in this city.

Increasing Migration
The United States of America represents increasing migration well, due to the fact that the USA has the highest total number of immmigrants. According to Telegraph.co.uk, the United States is home to 19% of the world’s immigrants. Within the United States, there is constant migration especially considering how popular having a car in this country is. People can drive from state to state in their car and migrate all over the country. People can also catch flights, ride the train, catch a bus to get to wherever they want to go in this country. It even takes longer to get through the whole state of New York than it does Europe, which is quite fascinating.

Flexible Accomulation
The Air Jordan brand is a prime example of Flexible Accomulation. Air Jordans are manufactured in China and cost Nike a little bit more than 16 DOLLARS to make. However, whenever a pair of Air Jordans drop they usually sell within the 180-220 price range and that is just retail. Some people even pay 300 or more dollars just for one pair of jordans. With that being said Jordan is making more and more money for a fairly cheap price.

Time-space compression
The GPS is a prime example of time space compression especially comsidering the way it evolved over the years. 30 years ago people would have to use a physical map and know street names to get somewhere. Now the GPS shows and tells you exactly where to go, and even gives you a estimated time of arrival. The GPS can also pin exactly where you are to help you with your navigation as well. It also updates you on whether or not there is traffic along your route, which can help someone save time.
