At the end of season 1, at the eye of the world, it's the way Moiraine wants to know where Rand is going, not because she needs him for the mission, because we both know if she'd kill him for the mission, she'd follow him, but because she wants to escape too. How can she live like this, with her power taken away. Her links to Lan and Siuan gone. She doesn't want to go back -- she wants to run too. But she bites the bullet for Rand to pass his story on to the others because he's right, she owes him and she respects that. The real gift she gives him isn't leading others to believe Rand was dead but that she stayed behind and let him escape alone.
